    1. Corinne MERRITT (1862-1881)
    2. bill Penny
    3. I am looking for the parents of my great-grandmother,Corinne MERRITT (ca 1862- 14 Jul 1881), and perhaps also known as Sarah Corinne MERRITT. She appears in the 1880 census in Marshall, Harrison,TX at age 18, living alone and working as a housekeeper. The records say she was born in Louisiana. Would anyone have access to the census records or other records to check if a likely MERRITT household is also living there at the time? She died in Galveston, TX in 1881 after giving birth to my grandmother. I have reviewed the Louisiana census records of 1870, and although I located many MERRITT households, I could find no clue for hers. I could have just overlooked it. I understand Marshall was an entertainment mecca in those days, so that may be what drew the young woman there. Thx for any pointers, help, etc. Bill Penny MN

    1. HUMPHRIES, Joseph & Sarah, Harrison co. TX
    2. Peggy Loar
    3. Hello List, Hope this isn't too confusing, since there are 2 Joseph's in this query; one is husband and one is father. I have just signed on to the list, having gotten info yesterday that Joseph STORY's wife; "Tina/Tiney/Tennie/Tenie" was the daughter of Joseph HUMPHRIES. Joseph HUMPHRIES was reportedly married to Sarah ? and he died in Harrison co. Texas in 1844. Does anyone know more than this of Joseph and Sarah HUMPHRIES? I'll be happy to exchange info on descendants of Joseph STORY and "T/T/T/T" HUMPHRIES' descendants through their daughter Ellen.

    3. The promised LDS site is up - still as a test site, but no password required. Expect delays, time-outs, page-not-found messages, etc. since it's been really busy. It's www.familysearch.org and you can read all about it at : http://www.ancestry.com/columns/eastman/index.htm I'm not LDS, and all I know is what I just wrote, so please don't ask me any questions about the site. I'd just have to tell you I dunno <g>! Gail

    2. Anita Handley
    3. Methodist Church Services are held the 1st Sunday of every month at 11:00 at the Chapel at Scottsville Cemetery. My mom took my grandmother a couple of months ago, only about 10 folks were there. There is no choir or anything, just a nice little service. Lasted about 30 minutes. Thought someone might like to go sometime and visit. It's a beautiful little Chapel. Anita

    1. Web Site Changes in plain text this time
    2. Gail Brown
    3. Hi, (Sorry, I should know better than to send e-mail to the list as HTML!) I've just finished making some changes and additions to the Harrison Co. TXGenWeb site at http://www.rootsweb.com/~txharris/harrison.htm I did away with the background, which - hopefully - will make the text easier to read, and I've moved some of the links around. I really hope the site will be easier to navigate for you, but I'm always open to suggestions. I've added 4 more GenConnect Message Boards - Deeds, Pensions, Wills, and Bible Records. The entry page for all the GenConnect boards is at http://www.rootsweb.com/~txharris/genconnect.htm and I'd love for you to post any of these records for others to see. Please follow the instructions and let me know if you have any problems. If you're planning to come to Marshall to do some research, you should know that the courthouse museum is undergoing a major roof renovation, which is scheduled to be completed by the end of November 1999, in time for Wonderland of Lights. All the exhibits have been moved to an off-site location, for safekeeping, but the Research Library will remain open, Tuesday thru Saturday, 10-5. It may be necessary to move the library materials at some point, and I'll let you know when that happens. Meanwhile, let me know - or write the museum at museum@shreve.net - if you're coming, so you won't have any unhappy surprises when you get here. If you'll be in the neighborhood April 10, there will be a Genealogical Seminar in Jefferson that day - it's put on by Everton's and should be very good. Details are on the web site. Gail

    3. I am not really a genealogist. I consider myself more of a compiler. My father was a genealogist and died before he could organize his research. I have been compiling his work into a readable database. (I use Parson's Family Origins) I would be happy to share what information I have compiled. I have a very large number of lines since, from my daddy's perspective, there was never a rabbit trail too obscure to follow. The main ones are as follows: 1. Bogue (TX, NC, AR) I have about 4 generations on this line. Family of John Robert Bogue who live in and around Marshall, TX, Harrison County) Roberson/Robinson (TX, GA) (Descendants and Ancestors of Leola Pearl (Robinson) Bogue (1914 - 1995) of Marshall, Harrison Co., TX 2.Ancestors and Descendants of Claude B. Finley, Jr. (1930 - 1989) of Marshall, Harrison Co., TX 1. Finley (TX, TN, Scotland) (Ancestors and Descendants of Claude B. Finley, Jr. of Marshall, Harrison Co., TX A. Bullock (NC, TN, TX) (Ancestors of Holland Emma Bullock (1875-1953) and Claude B. Finley, Jr. of Harrison County B. Gurganeus/Gurganus (TX) (ancestors of the Bullock's) C. Hamilton (TX, GA) (Ancestors of Mary Elizabeth Hamilton (1911) living in Marshall, Harrison Co., TX (a) Rose (TX, Miss, NS, GA, Virginia, Scotland) (Ancestors of Mary Elizabeth Hamilton (1911) living in Marshall, Harrison Co., TX (b) Scott (TX, Miss, NC, SC, Virginia) (Ancestors of Mary Elizabeth Hamilton (1911) living in Marshall, Harrison Co., TX - descendants and ancestors of William Thomas Scott (1811 - 1887) (c) Scruggs (TX) (Ancestors of Mary Elizabeth Hamilton (1911) living in Marshall, Harrison Co., TX (d) Whatley (TX, GA, NC, Vir, England) (Ancestors of Mary Elizabeth Hamilton (1911) living in Marshall, Harrison Co., TX - Through Mary Elizabeth Scruggs (1856 - 1919) and Charity Antoinett Strong (1834 - 1920) (e) Washington (NC; GA; Vir; Thrapston, Northamptonshire) (Ancestors of Mary Elizabeth Hamilton (1911) living in Marshall, Harrison Co., TX 3. Shadions/Shadowens (TX) Descendants and Ancestors of Erbye Ophelia (Ratley) McCarty (1899 - 1995) of Marshall, Harrison County, TX Ratley (TX, TN) Ancestors of Erbye Ophelia (Ratley) McCarty (1899 - 1995) of Marshall, Harrison County, TX 4. McCarty (TX) Descendants and Ancestors of Herbert H. McCarty (1898 - 1974) of Marshall, Harrison County, TX a. Pruitt (TX) (don't have much on the Pruitt's, a new line) Parents of Ollie Irene (Pruitt) McCarty living in Marshall, Harrison Co., TX - descendants of Elonzo Edmund Pruitt and Willie Francis Harris (1896 - 1972) of Marshall, Harrison Co., TX possibly lived in Matinburg, Cass Co., TX for a time. 1. The Buffalo Barracks
    2. Clifford R. Williams
    3. To All Whom It May Concern: The purpose of this message is to inform all genealogists & researchers who subscribe to TEXAS Rootsweb Lists, of a very important web site that now has a searchable database of over 1,650 U.S. Regular Army soldiers who once served at the short-lived Buffalo Barracks, between 1835 and 1846. Many of these soldiers had fought in the Indian Wars in Florida and also the War with Mexican, and then the Civil War. It is without doubt that some of the descendants of these men are most likely in every county of the great state of Texas. IT SHOULD BE NOTED THAT: The 1840 Census of Buffalo, NY lists Colonel James M. Bankhead, of Virginia, and a total 'quantity' of 671 individuals, ranging in age from 1 to 60, as being under his command and/or responsibility. Unfortunately, the census does not list each of these barracks residents by name....only by 'quantity.' (ie. 426 males 20-30 yrs, or 34 females 20-30 yrs) HOWEVER, The Buffalo Barracks Historical Web Site has turned most of the 'quantities' into actual names. The list of these officers and soldiers (and some of their wifes and dependants...see the Barracks Notebook section) are available, free of any charge. The URL for this outstanding web site is: [ http://www.buffalonet.org/army ] There, you will discover the "Descriptive & Historical Register Data of Enlisted Soldiers in the U.S. Army," for those who served at this federal military post on the Niagara Frontier. Also available is a wealth of rare and interesting information pertaining to the Buffalo Barracks and it's unique historic value. I encourage everyone to take the time to visit this site. Perhaps you have an ancestor who once served there? Enjoy your visit, Cliff Williams 104740.372@compuserve.com buffalobarracks@hotbot.com

    3. Sorry that I apparently jumped the gun on spreading the word about the LDS web site. I'd been reading about its coming for a couple of weeks and got the word, from another list, that it was up yesterday. This morning I got in, but the server was "too busy". Now, apparently they have closed the site to select Beta testers. This is probably not a bad thing. They will work out the bugs, then refine the system, before making it available to all. The final show may not be online for a few weeks/months, but I'll let you know when it happens. I'm not LDS, so have no inside knowledge, but it looks like it will be a great help to our online searching when it's finally online. Worth the wait! Gail

    3. The LDS has finally put its searchable web site online - at least temporarily. This is a test site which will be up until March 28, when they will take it down for refinement. Only problem is that when I've tried to use it, everyone else is, too, so I keep getting "server too busy" message. Anyway, if you're a night owl, maybe you can get on in the wee small hours of the morning! It looks very promising! See http://eval.familysearch.com/Browse/browse.asp for more info. Gail

    1. A Real Virus
    2. Gail Brown
    3. As you know, most virus messages are hoaxes - this one apparently is not. HAPPY99.EXE doesn't appear to very damaging, so there's no reason to panic, but I thought you'd want to know about it. My apologies if you've already gotten this message from another source. The following site: http://www.geocities.com/SiliconValley/Heights/3652/SKA.HTM gives this information: "This virus is attached to newsgroup and e-mail messages as an attachment called Happy99.exe. You cannot get infected with this virus just by reading a newsgroup or e-mail message. You have to execute the attachment. Almost always, the person who sent it does not know that they are sending it out. It does not show up in their Outbox. If you didn't execute the attachment, you can just delete it and move on. If you execute an infected attachment, it will display a firework display." It's always best to be on the safe side. Having received HAPPY99.EXE from my aunt (who didn't realize what she was sending), I had run it - thought the fireworks display was neat. I've just followed the instructions for removal, given at the above-mentioned site, and everything seems to be OK. Have a great day, Gail Listowner

    1. 16 Feb, 1899 newspaper

    3. Hi All, The Marshall News Messenger today 16 Feb. 1999, included the front page of the Feb. 16, 1899 Marshall Messenger, as the newspaper was known then. There's an obit for Mrs. A. E. Starnes, which I'll post here, as well as on the obit forum. <quote>Another one of Marshall's oldest citizens passed away when Mrs. Amanda E. Starnes died at 7:25, Wednesday night, Feb. 15th, 1899, at the residence of Mrs. B. R. Perry, which has been her home for some years past. Funeral services at the house at 9 o'clock Friday morning. Burial at Scottsville, at 1 o'clock in the afternoon. The remains will start for Scottsville at 10 o'clock. Mrs. Starnes was born in Mississippi Jan. 14, 1823. Her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Jno Graves, moved to Mobile, Ala., when she was four years old, and at the age of 14 she was married to Mr. John R. Smith, who died two years later, leaving her one child, Miss Cammie Starnes, who alone of her immediate family survives her. Mrs. Starnes is the last of fourteen children. Her sister-in-law, Mrs. Sarah Braves still lives on the old home place. Mrs. Jennie Coleman and Mrs. Mittie Bell, of Marshall, Mrs. Wm. Bradburn, of Houston and Mrs. Mattie Daniels, of Jack County, are her nieces, and Dr. W. F. Adkins and T. Y. Adkins, are her nephews. Mrs. Starnes was taken sick Dec. 25th and never got up. She was conscious up to twelve hours before she died, and in the last hours, as in all the years that had gone before, she showed that she was a christian - a real christian and was not afraid to die. For more than fifty years she has been a consistant member of the Methodist church. She not only professed christianity, but she lived it, and lived it so that it left its influence upon those around her. She had a short simple rule that she applied to things, and they had to square to it to meet her approval - it was: "Is it right?"<unquote> An added note - Other members of the Starnes family buried in Scottsville Cemetery are Ada Amanda - b. 11 Sep, 1852, d. 15 Oct, 1858 and Dr. W. A. Starnes - d. 4 Jul, 1878
