Cindy, VRs are available from 1903, according to http://vitalrec.com/tx.html However, records are spotty in the early years. I have a ggrandfather, who died in Colorado Co., in 1911, and there's no death certificate. Fortunately I do have an obit and his tombstone. The Texas State Library and Archives Commission has an excellent web site at www.tsl.state.tx.us/lobby. Although the site does not have an index to deaths or births online, they do have indexes to those records in both book and microfilm formats. If you have specific names that you would like them to search, they will be happy to do so. Please limit your requests to no more than 5 per e-mail and one e-mail per week. Contact Pat Fowler, Supervisor, Genealogy Collection, geninfo@tsl.state.tx.us . or 512 463-5463. A recent acquisition for our Research Library is the Texas Death Index, from the Texas State Archives. This index to Death Certificates filed in Austin, from 1903 to 1974, is on 18 microfilm reels. Contact the HCGS at museum@shreve.net . (However, if the Dept. of VRs couldn't find a 1903 death record, it won't be in this microfilm either.) I have already answered Cindy privately but thought of something else that I thought might be of interest to the list. We all know that there are indexes for birth and death records that can be seen at your local library or ordered for interlibrary loan. I have looked these indexes over several times for certain people knowing they died in Harrison Co. and not able to find them in the index. Even have a contact that will look up names and tell me if they are there in the index. Last week I went to Marshall and asked the lady to look for two names, one I knew was indexed and the for another who was never found in the index. Guess what...he was there as was the one indexed. I guess you all know by now that the indexes are done by humans and names will be missed or mispelled. Just thought I would pass this on. Most of the counties will do a search and tell you they are there and some want to charge money to look and then if the death or birth certificate is there, then you will have to pay for that....the search amount is added to included in the certificate cost. Well later list mates...good luck and good hunting in your researches...John Lowery Harrison Co, TX surnames----WILSON and FRIED
The Dept. of Vital Records was "Unable to locate" some items, and I was wondering if anyone could give me any clues on a follow up with them. They are as follows: 1. a Birth Cert. from Harrison Co , the person was born in 1915 and born in Harleton. They claimed that they found no record of his birth on file. Checking the Harrison Co., County Clerk's office provided no information as to a delayed B.C.. 2. a B.C. from Montague Co., TX , the person was born in 1916 and supposedly, the Court House burned, records and all. and 3. a Death Cert. from Montague Co., TX , the person died in 1903. They claimed to check the Delayed Birth Certificate files, and no luck on 1 or 2. Any suggestions? Thank you for your help, Cindy S. Pruitt lpruitt@maxinet.com

Oh my, I really should slow down and read more carefully! The article you want was in the Historical Society newsletter, not the Genealogy Society - so, I don't have it after all. BUT, there should be a copy at the museum library. I'm a little crazy - just finished and took to the printer, the Sept. newsletter for the Genealogy Society. Hi Jan, That would be *our* newsletter! I'm sure if you write museum@shreve.net , someone will find and copy it for you. (Actually I may have it here on diskette, since I have the last 4 years, but I'll have to hunt.) There should be quite a bit of stuff in the Research Library. Also, check out the Texas Handbook Online http://www.tsha.utexas.edu/handbook/online/ for info. This is cool! Edna Sorber told me that our lil ol newsletter was indexed in PERSI, and sure enough it is! Hi all I am giving a talk in October to two UDC chapters here in LA and my topic is Lucy Holcomb Pickens. I am having a terrible time finding material on her! In searching PERCI this came up. HARRISON COUNTY HISTORICAL SOCIETY NEWSLETTER, Vol. ___, # ___ Nov 1996 I am hoping that this is OUR Harrison Co and not another state. IF it is ours, can someone make a copy of the article and send it to me? I'll send you snailmail address privately. I surely do hope someone can help me. Jan Craven
Got this diagram outling Marion Co., TX property belonging to McKAYs, POTERs, TAYLORs, and WEATHERALLs. A portion of Johnson's Creek appears on the diagram as being outlined in the TAYLOR's property, and Trammel Trace appears to the opposite side of the TAYLOR's property. Anyone know anything about Johnson's Creek in Marion Co., TX as once being part of the SIMS plantation? Anyone with any information on this portion of Trammel Trace as appearing in Marion Co., TX? Thanks for passing on whatever you can. L.W. Snow
I keep coming across tuition receipts signed by Willis WHITAKER as having received payments for English, Latin, Music, Piano, Painting, and Board??? If Willis WHITAKER was not teaching at the Cedar Grove Plantation, who was? Anyone with any information on this matter of "home-schooling" at Cedar Grove??? Thanks. L.W. Snow
Greetings to all, If you had ancestors who ever lived in Pike Co., AL, we hope you will submit information about them to the Pike Co. Heritage book project. There is no cost to submit information about your ancestors for inclusion in this book. This is the biggest genealogy project Pike Co., AL has ever undertaken, under Heritage Publishing Company, & we know that many, many families from Pike County moved to Texas last century. Some left signs in their yards saying "GTT" & all their neighbors knew they had "Gone to Texas." For further information about this project, please e-mail me at orion@p-c-net.net. If you had ancestors in Pike Co., AL, please let them be included in this book! If you have infor- mation but don't want to write it yourself, please let us know & someone can do the writing for you. Thank you very much. -- Dorothy Ann Folmar Pike Co., AL
Thanks for the reminder about LDS films. The catalog is online at www.familysearch.org , so you can see what's available for circulation from the comfort of your easy chair, and then go to the closest FHC, to order the film. For those Harrison Co., TX researchers who are near an LDS (Mormon) family history center with a microfilm reader, the Family History Library at Salt Lake City has all kinds of filmed records of Harrison Co., including late births and late probates. There are even some filmed divorce records of the 1850s, but they have to read on a zoom lens and turned every which way. There are several films of marriage records, one an early typescript and about three films of marriages, one of which is an index. There is also a filmed index of some birth records. These can be borrowed from Salt Lake City for a small fee. E.W.Wallace

I would like to make contact with researchers who ancestors were slaveholders in Cass and Marion Co., TX. Would you be willing to share the name of slaves as found in your family documents such as wills, deeds, diaries, or tax records? I sure would appreciate this sort of information. African American genealogical research is difficult enough on its face--can anyone come forward with abit of help? Thank you. rustydouglas@pipeline.com BTW, I do have copies of the 1860 Cass and Marion Co., TX Slave Schedules--if someone would like a lookup, let me know.
I am seeking to make contact with any descendants of my grandfather's first cousin, C. D. SCOGINS (various spellings possible). He lived in Marshall and was the son of John W. SCOGINS. I don't know his dates, but he was a contemporary of my grandfather, James Frank SCOGINS (1882-1963). Any help will be appreciated. Thanks, Ron Massey Shreveport, LA
I have the 1860 slave schedule for Marion County, Texas. Anyone needing a lookup, contact rustydouglas@pipeline.com
I transcribed the following Marion County, Texas, African American Cemeteries in 1998. *Lewis Chapel Cemetery (complete list) *Union Chapel Cemetery (complete list) *Valley Plain/Kelleyville Cemetery (partial list) I will do free lookups! rustydouglas@pipeline.com
Hi all, I have bad news and good news ... Bad news is that Rusty Cook says his work schedule prevents him from coordinating the cemetery listing project any longer. He has done a fabulous job of collecting lists that volunteers have done; then he has been putting them into Access before sending on to me for upload to the web site. Thank you so much for all your hard work, Rusty - we'll miss you!! Good news is that there's a wonderful opportunity for someone else to get involved. The goal was (and is) to provide an every name index to the cemetery listings. I'm pretty much up to my ear lobes in maintaining the web site, editing the H.C. Genealogical Society newsletter (articles, anyone???), and would just love to have someone with an interest in continuing Rusty's job. (The pay's no good, but the satisfaction of helping others find their ancestors is immeasurable!!!) That being said - the other good news is that two more cemetery lists (Batts and Cain) have been added, with some corrections/additions to Scottsville Cemetery. I went with Hubert Bender, Alice Barron, and her family, to read Batts a couple of weeks ago. That was a new experience for me - lots of fun! Somebody asked about Cain Cemetery recently, but I can't remember who - hope you find what you're looking for! Take a look - any corrections/additons, let me know www.rootsweb.com/~txharris/hcem.htm www.rootsweb.com/~txharris/cain.htm www.rootsweb.com/~txharris/batts.htm www.rootsweb.com/~txharris/scottsville.htm It's been a busy day, and I'm retiring for now ... As many of you know, some of us have been working on a project to get the Harrison County cemeteries updated and posted to the internet. Unfortunately, my schedule for the next two years won't permit me to continue as unofficial coordinator of the project. We need someone to take over soliciting volunteers to do the field work, then entering the data into a data base [I have the cemeteries that are posted on the Harrison County GenWeb page in a DBF-IV database which I would be happy to pass on to anyone willing to act as coordinator. If you can volunteer to act as coordinator, please email Gail Brown at "rexbrown@shreve.net". Good Hunting! Bruce C. Cook AKA "Rusty" bccook@nh.ultranet.com
As I told you all earlier this summer, I've agreed to be the editor for the Harrison County Genealogical Society's newsletter, which comes out 4 times a year - Sept, Dec, Mar, June. The deadline for articles for each newsletter is one month before, so I can have lots of time to play with the format. Sooooooo ..... August 1 is coming up very soon! If any of you would like to submit a one-page article for publication, please let me know ASAP. If you have any suggestions and/or requests for articles, let me know that, too. Also, please consider becoming a member of the HCGS, if you're not already. Dues are only $10, and you can find out more by visiting www.rootsweb.com/~txharris/hcgensoc.htm There's a new link from the web site www.rootsweb.com/~txharris/harrison.htm - Ann Davis' (Ann's Ancestory Album) home page, which features a few Harrison Co. families - DAVIS, ONEY, PREW, and STARR. Take a look, and if any of you have similar home pages, let me know, so I can add the links. I don't think I put up as many pints of figs as Jan did, but our tree has really produced this summer - the first time in several years. Gail
