Looking for any trace of our great grandparents who lived in Marshall, Texas in 1920. They were originally from Nebraska, and eventually returned there, but lived in Marshall for an unknown period. Charles Leroy White was a glass engraver, he disappeared and was never heard from again. His wife was Mary Theresa (nee Kelly), called Mamie. They had two sons, Charles Leroy, Jr. and William White. William (Billy) attended St. Joseph's school in Marshall - Mamie was devout Catholic. We don't know what attracted them to Texas or how long they were there, nor do we know for sure if that is where Charles, Sr. disappeared from, though it is suspected. Any clues or suggestions would be most welcome! Thanks, Jo Newkirk-Hornecker

Cindy and all. It depends on the lodge. Some lodges keep great records. I was able to find out when my gggrampa died in Upsur Co cause the lodge there had published a history and included early minutes of lodge meetings. Contact the lodge there in Marshall and see if they have any records. Hopefully they do! Jan At 04:41 PM 03/22/2000 -0800, Cindy S. Cindy, I have just started to work on getting information on my great-grandfather's Masonic history so I can tell you my process. First, there is a site on rootsweb (http://www.rootsweb.com/~txburnet/mason.html) which will give you some tips on how to obtain information and what information you may receive. Second, I then went to the Grand Lodge site for the state my ancestor was in (for Texas it is at http://www.gltexas.org/. I wrote an e-mail to the Grand Lodge Secretary asking for information on my ancestor and gave the approximate years he belonged. The secretary told me the dates they had and gave me the name & address for his lodge. One of the secretaries called me on the phone. He was so helpful. Third, I wrote a letter to my ancestor's lodge asking for copies of any records they had on him. I just sent the letters yesterday. I hope I get more information from his local lodge than I got from the grand lodge. My ancestor belonged to the Masons in three states, so I wrote a lot of letters. Good luck!

Dear East Texas List, This one is for you. Dear J. Brown, Of course I remember you with your kindness. The Piney Tree's Huh. Not sure I can yet. I could Fwd a e-mail or two from people who live in the woods of tail pine trees, from Harrison co, and south and east a county or so. These people talking about their area with so much love and pride it just moves me. I remember talk about the piney woods getting started about 3 months ago, and Genealogy went out the window, and the whole list had something to say about the piney woods. Lots of neat things were said: Gods country! When I start seeing the piney woods, I know home is not much farther. Ohh,I live in Dalas, and how I miss the piney woods were I grew up. I asked if Wichita was in north piney woods? We were just having a lot of fun until the list owner brought us back to the list purpose. All the talk made me want to see the piney woods. As I need a marriage lic from Harrison Co. and would like to see where my grandfather was born; and my college daug. has spring break, wife needs to get away for 2-3 days--with the forgoing, it just seemed it was piney tree time. Gegards, Zella and My Dad, Carl Carl, What are the PINEY TREES? Tell us about them! I love to read your messages. Just a few housekeeping points from your friendly list administrator (Rootsweb's new name for listowner) - 1. Try to keep your messages pertinent to Harrison County TX genealogy or history. No one should mind an occasional off-topic message, but be sure it's really important before you send. If you're not sure whether your message is off-topic, write the list admin to check. 2. If you get a private e-mail from a list member that you think is rude, please do not post either the message or the person's name or e-mail to the list. Bear in mind the nature of e-mail - it's possible that what you consider rude, was intended as a joke. 3. If you're certain the rude e-mail was not a joke, i.e. a flame, you can ignore it, write the person back (privately) to be sure you understood the message correctly, OR write the list administrator. Most of the time, just ignoring the rude message will do the trick. 4. If you don't know who the list admin is, you can write to - (substitute the name of the list for LISTNAME) LISTNAME-admin@rootsweb.com , or LISTNAME-L-request@rootsweb.com, or post a message to the list, requesting that the list admin get in touch with you. 5. It is one of the list admin's responsibilities to maintain peace on a list and to keep little flickers from becoming flame wars. 6. If the list admin does not respond, go to http://helpdesk.rootsweb.com/mail.cgi and post your complaints or problems. Rootsweb wants to maintain a friendly, helpful atmostphere on its lists, and someone will respond to you. 7. A couple of URLs to remember: Rootsweb Mailing Lists - http://www.rootsweb.com/~maillist/ Rootsweb Help Desk FAQ http://helpdesk.rootsweb.com/ 8. As a follow-up to this message, please do not start a discussion of "list-admins/list-members I have known". I hope this helps - if you have any questions about mailing lists at Rootsweb, and the above information is not enough, let me know. If you have a problem with the way I administer this list, let me know that, too (personaly, please). Best of luck to all of you in your research in Harrison County - Gail www.rootsweb.com/~txharris/
Hi, group! Thanks for the positive feedback today. Currently, tornadoes are on the ground in Mississippi! I wasn't planning on any more off-topic e-mails today, but someone is very angry at me for my post. sacannon@prodigy.net Aparently, they don't realize that I am a Broadcast Meteorologist-- & we all push the NOAA Weather Radio, as a matter of safety. All the Weather Service Offices do this, as does the Weather Channel. In no way am I connected with "Radio Shack" or NOAA. ~ Its pure-safety, period. I recieved a "how rude!" note-- saying not because I was off-topic so much, but because I was "squeezing in an advertisement for my product". Honestly that thought never even occurred to me -- that anyone would think I'm a retail person. I do apologize. ~ Cami ~
For all of our U.S.- southern states list members--- we have a very serious, severe weather setup in place for this afternoon, evening, & overnight hours. There is a very high probability of tornadic activity. Conditions are currently changing rapidly. Please stay in touch with your local weather at all times. The best method is to purchase a NOAA weather radio, available at Radio Shack. ~ [Sorry to be off-topic for the genealogy lists, but we want you all back tomorrow!] ~ Cami ~
>From one of our list members, an added note on Topo maps - thanks, Delores! Thanks so much for sending this information. I work for USGS in Austin, and this is the most frequently asked question our Information Officer receives. I think the best source is: http://mapping.usgs.gov/ Click on the link "How to find and order USGS Topographic maps" Then, click on "Map Dealers" This takes you to a map of the US where you can click on any state and get a list of the current map dealers. Our office does not sell maps. National Mapping is a division of USGS, and getting this information out to the public is a daily effort. Thanks again for sending this information.
Take a look at Slave Narratives, a free 10 day database at http://www.ancestry.com
Recently I posted the web site for Topozone, which has loaded every USGS 1:100,000, 1:25,000, and 1:24,000 scale map, for all states except Alaska, which has different scale. That's www.topozone.com I was asked how to order the maps. Actually, you can print them from the web site, if you're using Netscape. There's some sort of bug that prevents accurate printing from IE, although the web site now has a tip (using the clipboard) for getting around it. They're working with Microsoft for a fix. But if you want to order topo maps, here are some addresses I got from a Land Class, at the Dallas Public Library, I attended last summer: 1. USGS Information Services Box 25286 Denver Federal Center Denver, CO 80225 303-202-4700 1-888-ASK USGS 2. MAPSCO Dallas, TX 214-219-6277 972-960-1414 1-800-796 MAPS 3. ONE MAP PLACE Dallas, TX 972-241-2680 4. FERGUSON'S San Antonio, TX 1-800-798-2112 5. MAP EXPRESS Denver, CO 1-800-MAP-0039 303-274-4440 Web Sites (I haven't checked these links lately so hope they still work.): UT Austin- Perry-Castaneda Library Map Collection www.lib/utexas.edu/Libs/PCL/Map_collection/Map_collection.html Cartographic Resources on the WWW (links to map sites) http://leardo.lib.uwm.edu/other.html University of Iowa - Center for Global & Regional Environmental Research www.cgrer.uiowa.edu/servers/servers_references.html Geographic Names Information Service (GNIS) http://mapping.usgs.gov/ An excellent book for land research is _Land and Property Research in the United States_, by E. Wade Home. I think I got my copy through www.ancestry.com , but it's probably available through any book store, or www.amazon.com . If you're interested in software for mapping deeds, go to Direct Line Software at www.ultranet.com/~deeds/ - lots of good information there. I have the software but just haven't had the time to try it out. Hope this helps with your land questions. Gail
After emancipation, did the slaves that your ancestors previously owned stay on working at the plantations or did the former slaves leave, never to be heard from again? Any ideas as to where they moved? What notes or stories can you pass along, in this regard? Would like to know if your family's slaves moved into the northeast Texas areas of Cass or Marion County. Most grateful for contact with researchers who's ancestors owned slaves in Cass and Marion Co., TX. Asking you to share the name of slaves as found in your family documents such as wills, deeds, diaries, tax records, as well as, any notes or stories you care to pass along. Can anyone come forward with abit of help? While I have your attention: if anyone is looking for information in the northeast Texas area of Cass and Marion County Texas, just e-mail me privately and I will be more than happy to do look-ups in my Marion and Cass County genealogical records. Just let me know. Much obliged. rustydouglas@pipeline.com
Thought you all would like this site - www.topozone.com You just put in a place name - town, hill, river, etc. - and you get a topo map of the area. If you want to print the map, you'll need to use Netscape, rather than IExplorer, since there's a bug that hasn't been resolved yet. The site has excellent directions and explanations. Gail
