I am trying to find out the exact date of death of Isabel Yancey COLLIER, supposed to have died in Marshall about 1844. She was the mother of James Yancey COLLIER who died in Marshall in 1868. I have looked for her on already transcribed cemeteries in the county without success. I realize her headstone may be unreadable since it is so old, but would like to know for sure. She may be buried next to James and his wife, Rebecca Wilder, but I don't know the cemetery.

    3. Even us folks up north know that Nacogdoches and Natchitoches were the names of two Indian twins who were born to the chief of a tribe which lived on the Sabine River. The twin brothers did not get along and it was feared that one would kill the other. Their father decided the only way they would both survive was to separate them. He sent Natchitoches a days ride to the East to line and Nacogdoches a days ride to the west thereby preserving the peace. If you will look at an atlas, you will see that the Red River makes up part of the northeast boundary of Texas, extends eastward into Louisiana, then turns south and goes through Louisiana, eventually merging with the Mississippi River above Baton Rouge. Having said that, Nacogdoches for years was known to new settlers as the "gateway to Texas."

    1. SMITH, Frances Ann
    2. Amelia Forrest Bogard
    3. Frances Ann "Fannie" SMITH married Elisha King FORREST in Harrison Co. TX 13 July 1864. Pension records and census show she was born in Alabama, but family tradition says she came to Texas from Tennessee; another family record shows her born in Mississippi. I quote from a family member's letter: "Grandmother Forrest's mother died when she was very young. Her (Fannie SMITH's) father was an overseer of the slaves for a plantation owner. Grandmother never lived with him--she lived with an older sister. After she married Grandfather (Elisha King) Forrest, during the war, she brought her little brother to Marshall, (Harrison Co.) Tx, to live with Grandpa's mother. All the men had gone to the war. Grandpa's mother lived in a log cabin with an open hall." Aunt Jewel Forrest Rabb told me that Fannie's last name was spelled "Schmidt, the German Way" originally. Elisha King FORREST had three brothers: Calvin, Perry, and Richard. Calvin and Perry stayed in Harrison Co. Elisha King and Richard moved on to Coryell Co. Elisha King and "Fannie" SMITH FORREST later moved to Taylor Co. and are buried in Abilene. Who were Frances Ann SMITH's parents? Who was the married sister? Who was the younger brother? What happened to him? Did he have descendants? Are there any of them in Harrison County? 3. George Washington Rains, the brother of my ggggrandmother Martha "Polly" Rains Price came to Harrison Co in the 1840's. He and Martha are both buried in Greenwood Cemetery along with many other Rains including Leta Rains Callaghan (b 12/13/1887; d 1/31/1920 Wife of Bryan Callaghan Jr. Leta looks to be about the right age to be George W's grandaughter. I'd very much like to share information with other Rains descendants who may know the children and grandchildren of George W. I believe my greatgrandmother may have been named for Leta Rains. Also interested in Bryan Callaghan if anyone recognizes the name. Is he a descendant of the well-known Texas politician and mayor of San Antonio also named Bryan Callaghan Jr.? I can share information on the Rains roots in TN and NC. I also have strong evidence of how the Marshall Rains connect to the Rains Co Rains (Emory and James Spencer) a question that's stumped much better researchers than me. Jan J. M. M. 2. Gail Brown
    3. Hello to Harrison County researchers - and a special welcome to the new members of this list - I'm beginning to work on the June issue of Ancestor Issues, the Harrison County Genealogical Society's newsletter. Part II of Carl Coffman's story of his ancestors will be included, and there's room for more! If you'd like to submit something - about a page in length - on your personal research, like how you solved a puzzle, please send it to me rexbrown@shreve.net . We started a Brick Wall column last issue, so if you have a stubborn ancestor who refuses to be found, send that in, too. If your family is planning a reunion this summer, let me know, too, and we'll include that information in the newsletter. I have to turn this one in to the printer by May 10 (or earlier), since I'll be out of town for much of May. Thanks for your help. Gail www.rootsweb.com/~txharris/

    3. Posted on: Harrison CountyTxGenWeb Queries Board URL: http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/USA/Tx/Harrison?read=690 Surname: James ------------------------- I am looking for information on Burrel and Josephine JAMES who lived in Harrison county in the 1870 and 1880 census and maybe later. Burrel was born around 1845 and Josephine was born around 1855. They and their children were listed as mullatto in both the 1870 and the 1880 census. Burrel's father came from Alabama and his mother from Mississippi. Josephine's mother came from Mississippi, her father's birthplace is not listed. One of their children was Wade Hampton JAMES born around 1872-1873 in Harrison county. I am hoping that this is the Wade James that is my husbands great-grandfather who was born and raised in Marshall, Harrison, Texas. Their other children were Emma(12), John (10), & Alice (6). There was also listed beneath the family of Burrel JAMES in the 1880 census another JAMES family that appears to be related. The names are John (33), Ellen (30), Alfred (12), Mary (10), Burrell (8) and Brooks (6). Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    3. The folks at Rootsweb have added another plus - messages posted at the GenConnect Query boards can be forwarded to the corresponding e-mail lists. What this means is that every time someone posts a query on the Harrison Co. site, it will be sent to this list as well. This should help to broaden the research experience for those interested in Harrison Co. genealogy. Now, if they can keep Harris Co. separate from Harrison Co., we'll be in good shape ;-] Gail www.rootsweb.com/~txharris/

    1. FARLEY-CORNELIUS
    2. Is anyone in Harrison County researching the Farley line? I am looking for a Cornelius girl who married a Farley in the late 1800's, probably about 1870-1890. The woman was a daughter of Jefferson Harvey Cornelius who moved to Texas from Blounty County , AL by 1870 when he settled in Cherokee County. According to an elderly aunt who died 30 years ago, the Cornelius girl married a Mr. Farley and settled in northeast TX. The possible names are: Elizabeth J., Rachel, Sis ( nickname is the only name she was known by), Susannah, Nancy. She had two other sisters: Mahala who married a John Holland, and a Elinor Belle who married Eugene Valentine Gates. Any help would be appreciated. Her brother was Aaron Cornelius who married Sarah Noble in 1864, The rest of the family settled in Bowie County and Angelina County. Reply to Barbara Gothie. bhgothie@mindspring.com.
