    1. VIRUS WARNING
    2. Ray Weathers
    3. Gang, if you know me you know that I RARELY pass along virus warnings because almost all of them have been hoaxes -- some as much as 3 or 4 years old. Whenever I receive a warning, I always go to 3 or 4 URL's and check them out. This time I found that there is some validity in the warning. If you have already received warnings about WIN95CIH, you have probably been frightened by its potential to wipe out your computer. Please go to this URL (http://www.symantec.com/avcenter/data/cih.html) and read a more official judgment of the virus. Yes, it can be very bad. However the scientists at Symantec say that the probablilty of actually being activated is very small. There are at least 2 procedures that may be taken to avoid the danger. [1] I plan to do this. Tape something over the on/off switch on your computer before midnight Saturday, 25 July, and leave it until Monday morning. The card, etc. taped over the on/off switch is simply to serve as a reminder to NOT turn on the computer on Sunday. Don't think, "Well, I won't go online. I'll just do things such as write letters.". If the virus is on your machine, turning it on anytime Sunday will activate it. [2] Search the following URL's. At least 2 of them contain procedures to find and remove the virus. "...there is online help from many sources, including: •Department of Energy Computer Incident Advisory Capability at <http://ciac.llnl.gov/ciac/CIACHoaxes.html> •Symantec Anti Virus Research Center at <http://www.symantec.com/avcenter/index.html> •McAfee Associates Virus Hoax List at <http://www.mcafee.com/support/hoax.html> •Dr. Solomons Hoax Page at <http://www.drsolomons.com/vircen/hoax.html> •The Urban Legends Web Site at <http://www.urbanlegends.com> •Urban Legends Reference Pages at <http://www.snopes.com> •Datafellows Hoax Warnings at <http://www.Europe.Datafellows.com/news/hoax.htm> " I always recommend that you check these and other official sites before passing on any virus warning -- including this one. Decide for yourself if I have interpreted these sites accurately.
