    3. ---------- From: Gail Brown <rexbrown@prysm.net> To: TXGEN-L@rootsweb.com Subject: [TXGENWEB] Fw: SW Branch of the National Archives Date: Friday, August 14, 1998 5:05 PM With David White's permission, I am forwarding this message received on one of my mail lists. I don't know that much about it but thought others might want to know the latest from NARA. It sounds like NARA and GSA have been in negotiations with the city of Ft. Worth for some time about the removal of the Archives from that location. The article may be found at http://www.star-telegram.com/news/doc/1047/1:METRO51/1:METRO510813 98.html Please contact David White at dlwhite@flash.net if you have any questions. Gail -----Original Message----- From: David L. White <dlwhite@flash.net> To: Scotch-Irish-L@rootsweb.com <Scotch-Irish-L@rootsweb.com> Date: Friday, August 14, 1998 10:53 AM Subject: SW Branch of the National Archives I invite your attention to the front page of the "Fort Worth Star-Telegram," of Friday, August 14th. The article by Laurie Mayk is entitled "Fort Worth may lose claim to history collection. Treasured archives could go to an out-of-state location." Now the cat is out of the bag. The Fort Worth City Manager, Mike Groomer, states that negotiations have been ongoing for about 2 1/2 years with the General Services Administration (GSA),the agency working as NARA's real estate broker. It now is clear that previous statements from Mr. John Carlin, the Archivist, and statements from other NARA officials have been less than candid. They have previously stated that there are "no plans" to close any NARA Branch, while in fact negotiations have been underway for 2 1/2 years. These discussions commenced 2 years BEFORE Mr. John Carlin formed the NARA Space Planning Team. NARA officials could claim that they haven't lied depending on how you define "plans." However, the final decision is still about a year away. Now is the time for the genealogical societies of Texas, Oklahoma, Louisiana, Arkansas and New Mexico to get active and write letters to their elected representatives. If they don't write now, the Southwest Branch will probably close and the records relocated to another area out of the Southwest. If there is no opposition from genealogists, researchers, and historians, NARA would be justified in closing the SW Branch in Fort Worth in the interest of "efficiency and cost-effectiveness." It can and will happen unless you get involved. Accessability to these records must come before efficiency and cost-effectiveness. And my profound thanks to the person or persons who brought this information to the attention of the "Star-Telegram." I would urge each of you send a Letter to the Editor of the "Star-Telegram" at letters@star-telegram.com We need to commend the "Star-Telegram" and Laurie Mayk for bringing this information to the attention of the public, and protest the potental loss of our records, and the smoke-screen (some would call them lies) by the NARA officials. Also, letters should be send to NARA Space Plan at space.plan@arch2.nara.gov requesting an explanation. It is time to hold the NARA officials accountable for their statements and actions. David L. White Fort Worth, Texas

    1. VIRUS WARNING
    2. Ray Weathers
    3. Gang, if you know me you know that I RARELY pass along virus warnings because almost all of them have been hoaxes -- some as much as 3 or 4 years old. Whenever I receive a warning, I always go to 3 or 4 URL's and check them out. This time I found that there is some validity in the warning. If you have already received warnings about WIN95CIH, you have probably been frightened by its potential to wipe out your computer. Please go to this URL (http://www.symantec.com/avcenter/data/cih.html) and read a more official judgment of the virus. Yes, it can be very bad. However the scientists at Symantec say that the probablilty of actually being activated is very small. There are at least 2 procedures that may be taken to avoid the danger. [1] I plan to do this. Tape something over the on/off switch on your computer before midnight Saturday, 25 July, and leave it until Monday morning. The card, etc. taped over the on/off switch is simply to serve as a reminder to NOT turn on the computer on Sunday. Don't think, "Well, I won't go online. I'll just do things such as write letters.". If the virus is on your machine, turning it on anytime Sunday will activate it. [2] Search the following URL's. At least 2 of them contain procedures to find and remove the virus. "...there is online help from many sources, including: •Department of Energy Computer Incident Advisory Capability at <http://ciac.llnl.gov/ciac/CIACHoaxes.html> •Symantec Anti Virus Research Center at <http://www.symantec.com/avcenter/index.html> •McAfee Associates Virus Hoax List at <http://www.mcafee.com/support/hoax.html> •Dr. Solomons Hoax Page at <http://www.drsolomons.com/vircen/hoax.html> •The Urban Legends Web Site at <http://www.urbanlegends.com> •Urban Legends Reference Pages at <http://www.snopes.com> •Datafellows Hoax Warnings at <http://www.Europe.Datafellows.com/news/hoax.htm> " I always recommend that you check these and other official sites before passing on any virus warning -- including this one. Decide for yourself if I have interpreted these sites accurately. 1. Texas Landmark Project
    2. Frank Saffarrans
    3. Hello again, More on the new TXGenWeb Project: "Texas Landmarks and Vanished Communities." Answers to FAQ: What Is The Objective Of The Texas Landmark Project: The objective of the landmark and vanished communities web pages is to highlight and give focus to the geographical locations of historical landmarks and communities. The prime focus is the actual location on a map. The prime vehicle for accomplishing this is the US Census TIGER map System. Submitters should include a brief description of the feature and may also include a link to another web page for more detailed information. What is Texas Landmark Project Motto? "If grandpa talked or wrote about it then it should be listed in the Texas Landmarks and Vanished Communities Index." What Land Marks Should Be Included? River bends, Valleys, grist mills, cotton gins, river crossings, bridges ferries, battles, hangings, cemeteries, churches, schools, colleges, pioneer ranches and farms, communities, blacksmith shops, stage stands, forts, hills, mountains, homesteads, trading posts, oil camps, ice works, bottling works, etc, etc. This includes information on who various landmarks such as as valleys, rivers and creeks were named after. What Are Some Consideration Concerning Names Of Llandmarks? River bends and Crossings: The USGS map makers only have the option of placing one name for a feature on their map. They use what they deemed the most generally used name. Consider the names of river bends - we have a number of them in Hood County. Most of the bends went by several names in the 1880's. The names of prominent landowners were usually used but there usually were several prominent land owners in the bend, hence several names. The maps today name one Brazos river bend, Walters Bend but you will find historical documents that call it Chicken Gristle Bend as well as Chicken Bristle bend. Our local historian says "the feature names on maps are nothing but gossip and the map maker only talked to a few gossips." People on one side of the river called river crossings by one name where people on the other side gave it another name. Some river bends on USGS maps do not have a name at all but the locals have a name for it. We want to preserve all of these names. Naming variations are also common for other type features as well. To Whom Do These TxGenWeb Texas Landmark Project County Web Pages Belong.?? They belong to the TxGenWeb county coordinator and other county researchers, Genealogical and Historical organizations who submit landmark data. The Moderator, Wayne Moyers and General Administrator, Frank Saffarrans are the caretakers with the main task of providing continuity. What Do You Mean By "Belongs To"? Each landmark submitted is "branded" in the submitters column with the name and address of the individual or organization that submitted the data. In a sense if you "brand" it then it belongs to you and therefore you "own" a piece of Texas. Remember Maverick? - Or is it like the homestead law? This "branded" business is just a game to give credit to those deserving people and organizations that submit data. You may find your county listed in the Landmark & Vanished Communities Index at: http://www.hcnews.com/~landmark. TxGenWeb County Coordinators, Genealogical Societies, Historical Societies and individual researchers are encouraged to submit landmark data on those places they are familiar with. With your help the Texas landmark Page will soon be a valuable Texas data source for genealogical and historical researchers world wide. How to Submit data: Do you have some landmark information but don't remember how to use latitude and longitude or don't remember how to determine Latitude and longitude? Check out our Map Blast Instructions at: http://www.hcnews.com/~landmark/mapblast.htm Or Tiger Map Service at: http://www.hcnews.com/~landmark/tiger.htm What is coming up next? We will be adding a web page where you may post queries on Vanished Communities and Landmarks. If you have a landmark with an unknown location you may post a query here and maybe someone will see it and give us the correct location. To those organizations and individuals who are presently submitting landmark data - WE THANK YOU, Keep up the good work!!!. Frank Saffarrans General Coordinator TxGenWeb Landmark and Vanished Community Project

    2. Frank Saffarrans
    3. Hello again from Texas Landmarks and Vanished Communities TxGenWeb Project More on the new TXGenWeb page, "Texas Landmarks and Vanished Communities." This page is where you can look up locations of historical landmarks and vanished communities as well as family farms and businesses. If it is not listed then you can submit the info - maybe you are the only one who really knows where it is located. In fact we encourage you to add your knowledge of your county to this page. If grandpa talked or wrote about it we would like for it to be listed. You can find your county listed in the Landmark & Vanished Communities Index at: http://www.hcnews.com/~landmark. Do you have some landmark information but don't remember how to use latitude and longitude or don't remember how to determine Latitude and longitude? Then check out the U.S. Government TIGER Map Service at: http://tiger.census.gov/cgi-bin/mapbrowse-tbl Browse around the TIGER System and you will easily learn how to use this system to find a detail map of any place in the USA. Practice using "Zoom Out". Zoom In" and "Move To a New Center" When you find the general location of a historical landmark that is not listed then turn on the option "Place marker (select a symbol below)" Click "ON THE IMAGE TO" heading. Point to the location on the map where your landmark is located and click. Bingo there is your map with the the location of your feature marked. Scroll down to near the bottom of the page and look under "place marker on this map" and there is the lat & lon coordinates of your land mark. When you are satisfied with your coordinates then go to: http://www.hcnews.com/~landmark/howto.htm and submit your landmark data. If you don't have lat/lon in ddmmss (example: 325045N 0973456W) format then use decimal degree notation, (example: 32.4768 lat or -97.5786 lon.) Again, your input is needed. If the landmark you are interested in is listed but does not have a description please consider submitting it. BTW County Coordinators are encouraged to provide a link on their county page to the companion Landmark and Vanished Communities WebPage. 1. Texas Landmarks: Hamilton County
    2. Frank Saffarrans
    3. Hello Ray & Elreeta , Hamilton County Coordinator, TxGenWeb needs your help. TxGenWeb has a new project - Index of Landmarks and Vanished Communities. A page has been set up with the basic USGS data for your county. Provisions are made for you and others to submit additional data on your county concerning landmarks; vanished communities; historical churches, schools, cotton gins, grist mills, river crossings, river bends; current and historical cemeteries, historical buildings (log cabins, family farms, early homes and businesses. etc.). In earlier times landmarks were known by several names. We would like to list them all. If grandpa talked about it we would like to give it a location - with the help of researchers in your local area. You will note that "clicking" on the feature name will take you to a page showing tabular data ; then "click" on "Show Feature Location " and you will taken you to the map. You may then "Zoom In" to get more detailed information. The initial Landmark and Vanished Communities County pages do not contain data in the description column as the USGC data did not include this information. The submittal form may be used for you and other researchers to add this information. The far right column of your current county index shows USGS as the submitter as data was extracted from USGS records. Others, such as you, submitting data will have their name and e-mail address in this column. Other researchers can then contact you if they have questions concerning your landmark entry. To get an idea of the type of data that can be added please View Hood County Landmarks at: http://www.hcnews.com/~landmark/hood.htm as an example.
