Hi Everyone, Please mosey on over to the TXGEN list TXGEN-L@rootsweb.com and help me welcome 2 new CC's to the TXGenWeb. Kaitlan Davidson, (Amber's sister) is assiting her mom with Kleberg County and Virginia Sofge is working with Lee Huff on Cladwell County. Welcome to the TXGenWeb, Kaitlan and Virginia! Shirley
The new URL for the TXGenWeb is www.txgenweb.org and it is alive and well! Please note that all county URL's on the new server will be in this format: www.txgenweb.org/txcolorado Trey Holt suggested that we should use the URL for the USGenWeb that is forwarded to wherever the site is located is: www.usgenweb.org Shirley
TGN will not leave up any redirect pages. When you have moved everything to the new server TXGenWeb's or any other), please leave your main page as a "spacer" with the logos (US & TXGenWeb) and links to the sites. The County Header and CC contact information, links to the county tables and iinteractive map, and links to the neighboring counties, as well as the link to your new county website. Do NOT type out the county urls but to make the county name clickable. That way rootsweb people will have to look at the page html to realize it is not a link to one of their sites. This will serve two purposes. First, the familiar URL will not be assigned to someone else as a county website and it will direct researchers to the new site. If you have any questions, please contact me, Elaine or Bettie. I am working on a Q & A page but might not get that completed until sometime later Saturday. Thank you for your patience. Shirley
The following question was asked, and response received from David Graham, Sr Rootsweb Product Manager, Rootsweb.com Please feel free to share with USGenWeb Project lists. Tina Vickery National Coordinator USGenWeb Project -- Tina, Only RootsWeb URLs should be affected. A page at www.rootsweb.com/~pagename would change to www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~pagename (though the old www.rootsweb.com/~pagename URL would still work and would just redirect to the new URL). Pages with their own domains (URLs without rootsweb.com in them) that are hosted on RootsWeb would not be affected. Thanks, David Graham
Please forward to all Project lists. Tina Vickery National Coordinator USGenWeb Project ____ RootsWeb Announcement As you know, The Generations Network has hosted and funded the RootsWeb online community since June 2000, thereby maintaining RootsWeb as the world's oldest and largest free genealogy website. TGN remains committed to this mission and believes that RootsWeb is an absolutely invaluable and complementary resource to Ancestry.com, our flagship commercial family history site. We believe in both services and want to see both communities prosper and grow. As part of this goal, we have decided to "transplant" RootsWeb onto the Ancestry.com domain beginning next week. This move will not change the RootsWeb experience or alter the ease of navigation to or within RootsWeb. RootsWeb will remain a free online experience. What will be different is that the Web address for all RootsWeb pages will change from www.rootsweb.com to www.rootsweb.ancestry.com. Again, the RootsWeb experience is not changing. The decision to host RootsWeb on Ancestry.com is being made for one primary reason: we believe that the users of each of our two main websites can be better served if they have access to the best services available on both. Simply stated, we want to introduce more Ancestry.com users to RootsWeb and vice versa. Today, despite the fact that Ancestry.com and RootsWeb.com are the two most frequently visited family history sites on the Web, only 25 percent of visitors to Ancestry.com visited RootsWeb in January 2008, while only 20 percent of visitors to RootsWeb visited Ancestry.com (according to Comscore Media Metrix). We think we will serve our users best by doing a better job of letting them know what is available on both Ancestry.com and RootsWeb. Hosting RootsWeb on Ancestry.com is the first step towards making this happen, but we will absolutely look for more and better ways down the road to advance this goal. Hosting RootsWeb on Ancestry.com will also make it easier for us to make changes and improvements to the RootsWeb experience in the future. All old RootsWeb URLs will continue to work, whether they are bookmarks or favorites, links to or from a hosted page or URLs manually typed in your Internet browser. We will have a redirect in place so that all old URLs will automatically end up on the appropriate new RootsWeb URL. You will never need to update your old favorites or links unless you want to. We have worked to make the transition as seamless as possible for our users, and this change should have a minimal impact on your experience with the site. RootsWeb will remain a free online experience dedicated to providing you with a place where our community can find their roots together. If you have questions regarding this change please email them to feedback@rootsweb.com. Thanks, Tim Sullivan CEO The Generations Network, Inc.
I have just learned that 6 more states are planning to move to independent servers. Counting Indian Territory, that will leave 16 states on RW. Shirley

*Please forward to Project Lists* This is the latest response we have received from RootsWeb/TGN to the comments and questions from members. Thank you all for your continued comments and questions, and to RootsWeb/TGN for their willingness to work with us and address them for you. Tina Vickery National Coordinator USGenWeb Project --- Tina, RootsWeb and Ancestry hyperlinked logos opening new windows: Our other masthead implementations do not trigger new windows, and I'm not sure users would necessarily expect that (as it does not look like a separate 3rd party advertisement where a new window would usually be used). If this is a point of concern, though, we should be able to set up the hyperlinked logos in the USGenWeb specific header to open new windows. Manually adding the code to individual pages: We are working to come up with an easier solution for users with multiple pages. This is one of the main reasons we've decided to delay the masthead inclusion, because we really want to offer something user friendly around this. As we know more I'll make sure to update you. Masthead colors: We are sensitive to our branding as we have been working very hard across the company to develop positive, consistent branding. That being said, our creative design group is working on the masthead to see if we can meet the branding goals of both sides. I will follow-up on this as we have something. Thanks, David Graham
Please forward to all USGenWeb Project lists with the permission of David Graham, Sr. Product Manager RootsWeb.com. Tina Vickery National Coordinator USGenWeb Project --- Dear Tina, As I mentioned previously, we are delaying the inclusion of the mastheads from the March 15th date we initially targeted. The goal is to make sure that there is appropriate time to clearly communicate with everyone and answer questions, as well as hopefully creating a solution to allow web masters to change their masthead preference on multiple pages without having to edit each one. To do this the best way possible, we are now targeting mid-April to update mastheads. As that gets closer we will follow up with a more specific date. Please let us know what we can do during this timeframe to make sure that the masthead inclusion is as positive as possible. Thanks, David Graham Sr. Product Manager RootsWeb.com Part of The Generations Network
As a result of the recent poll concerning whether to move the TXGenWeb from the RW server, the staff has obtained server space with Active Web Hosting http://www.activewebhosting.com/ at a cost of $96.00 per year and will be moving the TXGenWeb website in the very near future. There will be room for all counties to move under the TXGenWeb umbrella if they choose to do so. The URL is www.txgenweb.org and the county websites will be extensions of that; example: www.txgenweb.org/brooks. If you should choose to obtain your own space and domain name at AWH http://www.activewebhosting.com/, please list the TXGenWeb in the "Referred by" box so that we may get credit for your joining. Beginning today, the staff will be busy setting the website up and I need to know which counties want to move with the TXGenWeb so that we can create sub-categories for them. If you wish to move your counties with the TXGenWeb, please send me a list of the counties to have space created for. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact Bettie, Elaine, or me. I want to thank everyone who voiced an opinion on this important issue. Sincerely, Shirley

To clarify my earlier message, the county websites will NOT be required to move with the TXGenWeb, if a move is made. As has always been the case, coordinators are free to have their county websites hosted on the server of their choice. Hi Everyone, I am sure all of you are aware of the situation with RootsWeb, Ancestry.com, etc. State and county projects are affected in the same way as the National Project, in that all pages housed on RootsWeb will automatically be branded with the RW banner. Several state projects are moving to alternate web hosting sites in order to prevent this branding. The TXGenWeb staff has been looking at alternate servers as a possibility for the TXGenWeb. We can obtain space for the entire project, including all counties, for $6 - $8 a month which, as State Coordinator, I am willing to take care of. The question before us now is: What does the TXGenWeb want to do? The choices are to continue with RW or to move to an alternate server. Please send your vote to any or all of the staff members. The USGenWeb Advisory Board contacted RootsWeb in regard to their plan to install banners on their webspace and have negotiated a banner specific to The USGenWeb Project that will be placed on the national pages of The USGenWeb Project. While these negotiations were ongoing, TGN/RW postponed applying the banners to sites of the USGenWeb Project to work on the concept of USGenWeb having a custom banner. The banner that we have negotiated identifies the USGenWeb Project as being hosted by RootsWeb and RootsWeb as a community of The Generation Network. The banners are viewable here: http://www.usgenweb.com/images/rootswebbanner/default1.jpg [default one] http://www.usgenweb.com/images/rootswebbanner/default2.jpg [default two] http://www.usgenweb.com/images/rootswebbanner/default3.jpg [default three] http://www.usgenweb.com/images/rootswebbanner/custom.jpg [custom to USGenWeb Project] RootsWeb intends to begin the placement of the banners beginning on or about March 15, 2008. The generic/freepages banner will be included on the server side [TGN/RW], and will not require any involvement from the webmasters. Any USGenWeb Project site that wishes to have the USGenWeb Project specific banner instead of the generic/freepages banner will be supplied with code to insert on their pages in order to cause that banner to show up when their pages are viewed. The line of code they will provide us is not a replacement banner. It will simply include a parameter on the page that the server can read when rendering the banner that will tell it to render the customized USGenWeb [Project] banner instead of the default one. The Board has made it very clear to TGN/RW that they should be the ones to implement the custom banner on Project pages. TGN/RW understands how editing each individual page could be a concern for account holders with a large number of pages. Most solutions they have looked at for doing this involve significant initial or ongoing development or operations work, but they are still brainstorming to try and find a good solution. They will get back to the Advisory Board this week after they have been able to investigate further. The Advisory Board has strived to maintain a balance of TGN/RW business needs as our host, while being mindful of the Project's paramount mission and goal to provide free genealogical data to our visitors and the USGenWeb Project community as stated in our bylaws. As National Coordinator, I want to thank all involved for their patience and input as we have worked to achieve this balance. In tandem with this, and perhaps more importantly, the Advisory Board is discussing a hosting agreement with TGN/RW. While that hosting agreement is confidential in nature, due to business concerns of our host, the Board is working to insure that the work of our many volunteers and contributors is protected. We welcome any of your questions/concerns as we all work together to finalize this negotiation process. Hi Everyone, I want to welcome Jimmy Epperson to the TXGenWeb as the new CC for San Patricio County. Please run over to the TXGEN list and join me in welcoming him. Carolyn Griffith and Elaine Stone have adopted Jefferson County. These ladies are unstoppable and I am happy to see them spread their magic to yet another county. Teresa Stewart has adopted Terrell County and is another CC who likes to keep busy. Teresa is fairly new to the TXGenWeb but has made an impact on the genealogy research for her first website, Webb County. The counties that are still available for adoption are: Hudspeth, Lubbock, and Mitchell. Shirley
Hello Everyone, The Surfing Committee is pleased to announce Grimes County as the February County of the Month. Congratulations to the County Coordinator, Eleanor Colson! Grimes County has much to offer the researcher and visitor. You can tour the Historic Homes, read about Grimes County in the News, view the photo gallery, and read the wills and estate records. Please take the time to visit Eleanor and the folks of Grimes County here: http://www.rootsweb.com/~txgrimes . Honorable Mentions go to the following counties: Bell, Coleman, Dallas, Houston, Travis, Victoria, and Wheeler. Congratulations to those CC's as well. Sincerely, Peggy T. Surfing Committee Chair
