If your county is on the txgenweb.org domain, the site is down while we make the change-over. It should not take us too long to get the sites up and running once again. Please bear with us. Shirley
Please share with Project lists as appropriate. The USGenWeb Project national pages are hosted on ixwebhosting. They are having a planned physical server move. Server will be down for a max of 48 hours. We apologize for the inconvenience of this to you and to our visitors. This will also affect other sites hosted on this server. Tina
Some folks have reported being locked out of their accounts and the following just might be the answer. As of last night, my Hunt County website (RW) was still was accessible with the old information but that can change at any time. Shirley This was from Rootsweb-Help Desk: You also need to make sure that the domain is users.rootsweb.ancestry.com (with the "ancestry" included). The old URL's won't work.
I know the last couple of weeks has been busy for everyone. Well, all I can say is that my brain finally went on strike. If you asked for web space on the new server and haven't received the information to make the move, please let me know. I had a list and all was going well... then I am not sure what happened.<g> Shirley

The new URL for the USGW Archives is: http://www.usgwarchives.org/ The only thing that needs to be changed is http://www.rootsweb.com/~xxxx to http://www.usgwarchives.org/ - leave the rest in any links to state/county Shirley

With the word getting out about all the moves, everyone is rushing to see the new websites. This is causing the websites to be "sluggish" and load very slowly. As the traffic begins to drop to normal, the sites will load normally. But, in the meantime, it is going to be erratic and slow. The only thing we can do to help is to not view the new sites any more than we have to for a few weeks. Once everyone has seen the new sites and gotten them bookmarked/added to their favorites list, it will be much better! Elaine
-- Please forward to All USGenWeb Project Lists -- It has come to the Advisory Board's attention that there are some issues, that we feel need to be addressed Project-wide. It is our very strong desire that volunteers, who have maintained sites hosted by RootsWeb but who have chosen new hosts be gracious and polite to RootsWeb. If you choose to leave RootsWeb now, please remember that it has been gracious to and supportive of the USGenWeb Project. The Advisory Board strongly objects to any of our members leaving rude or inflammatory messages on vacated sites. The Bylaws for USGenWeb state that volunteers have the right to choose the server on which their pages are placed. State Coordinators do not have the right to threaten delinking or any other penalty if their volunteers stay with or leave RootsWeb or any other server. Please forward to USGenWeb Project lists. Forwarded from David Graham, Sr. Product Manager RootsWeb.com. Further questions and concerns from USGenWeb Project members who host sites on TGN/RW are being gathered and will be communicated to David to address. Thank you all for continuing to share your questions and concerns with the Advisory Board. Tina Vickery National Coordinator USGenWeb Project --- David, We have the following questions from across the Project. I am certain there will be more to follow: 1. Are you aware of how many states and counties have already moved off RootsWeb? Does Rootsweb and Ancestry understand the inevitable consequences of this latest announcement? I don't have a specific count of state and county pages that have moved off of RootsWeb at this time. We do recognize that some may choose to be hosted elsewhere due to this announcement, but we are truly working to ensure that this change does not affect the RootsWeb online experience at all. It should not change the experience of being hosted on RootsWeb. 2. Does this mean Ancestry will include the Rootsweb sites in their Search on Ancestry, either by subscription free and/or both? There is no change in what is surfaced in Ancestry's search due to this change. The pages and data on RootsWeb will continue to be part of the separate, free RootsWeb online experience. There is no plan to require a subscription to access user content from RootsWeb. 3. How will this effect search engines and counters, etc that are in use our existing www.rootsweb.com/~xxyyyyyyy/ URL's? People should continue to be able to find your pages when using search engines. Right now the search engines will have listings for the old RootsWeb URLs, and it will take a while for the new URLs to show up in search engines. Since we will be redirecting members to the new URLs, though, they will still be able to access the pages regardless of what links come up through the search engines. As far as impact on page counters, I don't think there will be an impact, but I will need to verify with our technical experts and get back to you on that. 4. Are the mailing lists affected by this? Either the mailing lists administered by the USGenWeb Project Advisory Board or the many county and other lists maintained coincidently by USGenWeb Project volunteers? This change should not affect mailing lists in any way. If we find that this is not the case, we will make sure to let you know. Tina Vickery National Coordinator USGenWeb Project

Q - Where is the NEW TXGenWeb domain? A - The new domain is located at Active Web Hosting (AWH) www.activewebhosting.com The new URL for the TXGenWeb is www.txgenweb.org All county URL's on the new server will be in this format: www.txgenweb.org/txcolorado URL for the USGenWeb that is forwarded to wherever the site is located is: www.usgenweb.org Q - If we do not move with the TXGenWeb to the new server, will you find someone to put our county page on your server? A - No. We will simply link to your county wherever it is housed. Q - Do I delete all information from the RW website? A - When you have moved everything to the new server (TXGenWeb's or any other), please leave your main page as a "spacer" with the logos (US & TXGenWeb) and links to the sites. The County Header and CC contact information, links to the county tables and iinteractive map, and links to the neighboring counties, as well as the link to your new county website. Do NOT type out the county urls but to make the county name clickable. That way rootsweb people will have to look at the page html to realize it is not a link to one of their sites. Q - Will a re-direct page on the RW county page be okay? A - Re-directs have always been against Ancestry's policy. The re-direct pages are taken down rather quickly. Q - If we leave Rootsweb/Ancestry and remove our content, are they going to consider themselves entitled to restore it somewhere else? A - Most likely, Ancestry will. Be on the look-out for your files on Ancestry's website. Mo is already looking into Copright infringement against TGN. Q - Will some other county site be put up in our county web space? A - Probably. The URL's to the county websites are well-known to researchers and the general consensus is that TGN will not let those valuable pieces of "real estate" sit vacant. Q - Will Ancestry include the Rootsweb sites in their Search on Ancestry? A - WAITING FOR AN ANSWER Q - Are the archives moving with us? A - The Archives is a separate entity and will not be moving with us. They most likely will move as a whole unit to an independent server. Q - Will there be any provision for those who what/need to use FP extensions? A - How to use FP on the new AWH hosting service: http://www.activewebhosting.com/faq/ftp-frontpage.html Q - What about my search engine? Do I have to notify FreeFind of the move? A - You will need to replace the old URL with the new one by either updating the information or registering as a new site. No notice is necessary.
Good morning all, Last night I used Colorado County as an example to show how county site URL's would be on our new site without thinking that it wasn't online yet. To see a county that is online, go to Hill County http://www.txgenweb.org/txhill Also, please check out Elaine's Hill County website on RW. http://www.rootsweb.com/~txhill/ "I made a "shell" page out of the original Hill County index page. It looks just like it did before, except I pointed most of the links to the new txgenweb.org site for Hill County. I left the old pages up for addresses, lookups, and other information type pages. I then deleted all files that held the actual data from rootsweb. So instead of just having a redirect page, it is actually a working website, without the goodies being housed on rootsweb." Elaine Thanks, Elaine, for a very nice example. Shirley
