I am trying to find the burial site of John S. HODGES who was living in Guadalupe Co TX at the time of the 1870 census with his second wife, Serena A. HALL, and three of his children from the first marriage. Serena married again in 1875 making me believe John had died between 1870 and 1875. Karen Venable kvenable@pe.net
I'm writing this to every email list that I manage. My computer was recently infected with a virus named Prettypark.exe. It is a email worm but it also has some severe things in it that I feel I need to warn you about. This is not a hoax virus alert. I do this stuff for a living and this one is real. Do a search on one of the multi-engine search sites and see for your self. I got an email from an old acquaintance who I know did not suspect that this email was even going out. This virus is like the Happy99.exe virus that locks onto your email file and sends out email without your knowledge with an attachment named Prettypark.exe. If you click on the attachment it is too late. It takes your email and it also tries to send some of your files (credit card #, passwords etc...) and sends them to a chat room type of thing in France. The person who wrote this apparently wanted to rip someone off and spent a lot of time setting this up. http://www.hill.house.upenn.edu/virus/virus.html Do a search on your system for a file named files32.vxd If it exists you are infected. Go to the web page above and follow the directions. Again, never send an attachment via the list. And if you get an attachment with an exe extension that YOU DID NOT ASK FOR, DO NOT CLICK ON IT. It is better by far to be safe than sorry. If anyone has received an email from me with an attachment name prettypark.exe I did not send it, this virus has sent it and I had no way of knowing it. I think everyone should have some kind of protection against viruses and it does not cost that much to have a good one and keep it up to date. I had let mine get a month old and that is not my policy but it happened. Ron McCandless
I receive email from a group that wants to have a new hiway built from Seguin to Lockhart to Austin. The idea is great, it is needed to make IH35 safer (now double the accident rate of any other Texas hiway because of NAFTA trucks). BUT.... This group is pushing and wants this NOW but one thing is not being mentioned as it never is when they discuss building hiways - cemeteries! They will tear through older, nearly lost family cemeteries that they find along the way. Even if they are taken care of they might be destroyed by the contractor. They have done it before when they built I-10. I suggest that we mount a campaign to make the state take notice of these historical resources. The State of Texas has a program to identify and protect historically qualified cemeteries but this takes time and effort. If you want information on that program write to me off the list. To have an immediate impact on this we must write to the same people these people are writing to and we have to be vocal. We have to have hand written letters AND phone calls ALSO. Stacey Benningfield Texas Turnpike Authority Division Texas Department of Transportation 125 E. 11th Street Austin, TX 78701-2483 I know how State Govt. works, the squeaky wheel gets the grease. So why don't we SQUEAK loudly. I'm writing to Gerron Hite who is the head of the Texas Historical Commission's program to save cemeteries (they helped us save one just a month ago) to fill him in on the situation but there is not much that he can really do UNLESS we get vocal. I am researching the McGUFFIN surname. Sheriff Hugh L McGUFFIN b. 10 Mar 1842, married Nancy Indiana REESE abt 1864, d. 18 Jun 1924. Hugh was a sheriff in Guadalupe County from 1884 to 1890. Hugh and Nancy are buried in Cement Cemetery outside La Vernia in Guadalupe County (borders Wilson County). Their stones are not together. Nancy is buried with REESE kin and Hugh is alone on other side of a gravel path. I have pictures of their stones. I don't know for sure where Sheriff Hugh McGuffin was when he died although one researcher has suggested Kingsville in Kleberg County. I have just joined that mailing list (no activity so far) and have not had a chance to ask if anyone can check for a death certificate there for me. Need to find his death certificate or some proof to his parents. I have run into conflicting information on Hugh's parents. One source has him as the son from the second marriage of Judge Hugh McGUFFIN to Delphia EARL. Have since found two articles published in Seguin that has him as the son of John F. McGUFFIN (also a Judge). I believe the articles to be correct. What is misleading researchers is the 1850 census. It has 8 year old Hugh living with 70 year old Hugh McGUFFIN in Guadalupe County. I also need more information on John F. McGUFFIN. It is believed that he was a son of Judge Hugh McGUFFIN by his first wife Jenny (Jane) FORD. John F. was b. 30 July 1812 in South Carolina, married Sarah (Sally) Montgomery, 6 Jun 1838 (Montgomery County History Book), d. 15 Sept 1887. He was a JP in Guadalupe County in 1882 and lived there from 1878 till his death. He is buried at Riverview Cemetery in Seguin. One of the articles mentioned above was in the Seguin Gazette 9 Jul 1995. It had a picture of the stone, but the copy given to me last weekend only has the top half. I would like to go and get a real picture. It appears to be in very good condition. The story was actually an excerpt taken from an article written by Willie Mae Weinert for the Seguin Enterprise 1 Apr 1938. The other article I found was a special done for Law Enforcement Day and had no date or name of paper. It had a short story about all the sheriff's of Guadalupe County along with pictures. I also have a copy of this picture of Sheriff Hugh McGUFFIN (copied from an original 5x7 print owned by my father-in-law). I have been told by many that he only had one arm, but don't know the story about that (wish I did). If there is anyone that can assist in my search please contact me.
Serching for information on families of Christain and Dorthea Maser Randow who came to Us in 1871,via New Orleans La-Indianola TX. Setteled in Guadalupe Co. where Christain had a land grant in Seguine.Christain is my husbands GGGrandfather. Their children being Friedrich who lived in New Braunsfels GGrandfather, Marie who married Peter Hehl lived in Austin ,Karl who lived in Seguine Friederike lived in New Braunsfels and Willhelm who lived in Niederwall. Any information as to spouces, children. I have Pauls family who is Grandfather. Also any family back from Christain and Dorthea in Germany. Gladly pay for part of cost of vital records. I came up with a way to cut my vital records cost by charging $1.00 for each person who wants a copy. This way it frees up a little more money for future records. There are always at least 8-10 people who would like copies of what you have and takes much less time to get records. Willing to pay up to half of expence of your obtaining records. Before sending let me know what you have and cost. Have found I can make great copies of Photos by using quality copy service such as Kinkos. Use the color copier as it gives a more defined picture. You can tape a no. of snapshots or two 5-7 photos to a standard sheet and copy for a dollar. Have photos of Paul and Ella Trappee Randows children and son Martins family I will gladly copy and send for cost of copys and postage. Jean Randow marlinfever@centurytel.net

I'm new to this list and new to genealogy. I am researching the following names in Guadalupe County: McDougall (Gus, Felix, Frank, Geeto, George, Leroy, Leafy, Amanda, Otto) these were my grandmothers aunts and uncles on her father's side. I believe Amanda married Steve Luckenbach and Leafy married Warren Knox. The McDougall's would have lived in Guadalupe County in the late 1800's.
I will not normally want anyone to post virus notices to the list, however, since I've spent all morning helping a chain of some 50 folks get rid of this one I know it is not a hoax. That is the problem, most of the ones that are reported on lists are hoaxes. If you get an email with a subject like "Hey You!, here are some pictures..." or anything like that, even if the email address is one you know. Do not open it! Just delete it. This is a worm virus that takes someone's email address book and sends out email to some of the people in your list with your email address but it is sending an attachment usually named "mine.exe" to them. You will never know about it until your friends send you nasty letters about why you sent them a virus. If you don't have virus protection, you can have a free version at http://antivirus.cai.com/ The best defense is to have a real time virus program running (look in the "tray" of your Win98 system in the lower right hand corner of the screen. That usually protects against an infection even if you do open a worm virus. You must download upgrades to your virus program often or it will be out of date as there are some 2,000 new variants and new virus' hitting us every month. That figure varies with each report but the thing is... it only takes one to knock your research in the garbage... If you open the email that I described you may destroy your hard disk. This appears to be a destructive virus, meaning that it actually makes files and/or your hard disk unusable. Ron McCandless

We don't have very much traffic on this list and I think that we should try to connect a bit more. I want each of you to share your surnames that you are researching in our area and a little bit of information about them. Won't take you a minute to do and you might just find something that you didn't know. By the way, invite everyone that you know with Guadalupe Co. connections to join our email list AND to post on our GenConnect Boards. Ron Guadalupe County Coordinator
Good morning all, I've received a copy of a deed from Margaret HALSEL to a Joseph BECKER, executed by C. A. HALSEL, as Margaret's atty in fact. The deed **reserves one acre of land as a burying ground.*** Can anyone perhaps tell me if this burying ground is still intact? The land involved was part of the original head right survey of Robert HALL, then deeded to David S. HALSEL, then to Margaret "Peggy" HALSEL. The names of Joseph JOHNSON and Hannah SHAW are also mentioned. Any details, location of the land, etc. would surely be welcome out here in the wilds of California :-))))) Best regards, Carolyn Carter Johnson (mailto:rhunterg@ix.netcom.com)
I am a descendent of Henry B. King and Mahala J. Day. I am seeking any information on the death and burial of Henry B. King , who died in Dewitt Co.on 5 Dec1868. He was one of the original founders of Seguin and an early day ranger.I find it difficult to believe that he died and was buried without some public record being made of the event.Perhaps a Seguin newspaper had something on it. Was there a newspaper in Seguin in 1868? Bill K
