    3. I found this as it is, I don't have any explanations for the symbols but I think you can figure it out. If you have a bunch of folks in your file that died in a certain period before their 50th birthday or so then you might want to look at this to see if their area was subject to an epidemic. This is not the final word though in epidemics. I know that Influenza swept OK in 1903 killing hundreds but I guess that was too small an area. 3. My apologies to everyone for sending that "messed up" message previously. I should have known to cut and paste first. My mistake. Here is the message again and hopefully you can read the whole thing. Again, sorry if you receive this on more than one list but felt it was important enough to be forwarded to everyone. I am not in any way promoting this website or any other website. Vanessa ----- Original Message ----- Subj: Genealogy scam Date: 09/03/2000 6:30:57 AM Mountain Daylight Time From: plfleming@shelbynet.net (Phyllis Fleming) I received this message after it was forwarded to the INGENWEB state coordinator: About 2 weeeks ago we received a complaint from an Archives submitter that her materials were found on a genealogy subscription service: www.familydiscovery.com The submitter was able to do a little digging and found that they were linking to her files housed on her server, but shrink-wrapped inside a frame so it appears to be THEIR work. About 10 days ago, to investigate this, I signed up with familydiscovery. To date, I have not received a user id or password to get inside. The registered owners of the web site gave bogus telephone numbers in their registration. One number goes to a recorded message line; the other to a carpet company. Some of the e-mail adds on their web site bounce. Standing on the outside and looking through the window, it appears that several folks' web sites have been prize-mined: http://www.familydiscovery.com/whatsnew.htm The Storey Co., IA and the Washington Co., PA stuff seem to come from USGenWeb sites. Some of the other IA and NC stuff seems to come from non-USGW sites. None of the materials seem to be housed at either rootsweb or usgennet. If anyone out there is or has been a member of familydiscovery -- or has been ripped off by them, I ["Joy Fisher" jfisher@ucla.edu>] would like to hear from you. Permission is granted to forward this message. =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= wally@calweb.com

    1. TX-Cemeteries
    2. Donna
    3. Hello, I am proud to announce the creation of a new mail list called TX-Cemeteries. This list has the encouragement of Gerron S. Hite, Cemetery Preservation Coordinator in the History Programs Division of the Texas Historical Commission and he's excited at the opportunity to share his feelings about our cemetery preservation to a large group all at once Others that have been notified, Lee Campbell, Past Representative for the Texas State Genealogical Society {and my cousin} and her friend, Past President of the TSGS Wanda Donaldson. I've let all the following people know about the list and they may join from time to time. Yvonne Pickens, current President of the TSGS. Trey Holt, coordinator for the Texas GenWeb. Wyndell Taylor, creator of GA Cherokee County GenWeb page, {and my cousin}. <Smile> I just have a lot of cousins !!!! The main focus of this list will be to locate and catalogue our endangered cemeteries. Gerron Hite has obtained a new program to help us give our cemeteries "Historic Texas Cemetery Designation". He is willing to help us learn how to accomplish this designation. This will also be a topic for us to address. I am an experienced RootsWeb mail list admin. Currently I manage the mail list for VARoots, SC-Old Pendleton-District, and the Brand surname list. Donna, the lead technician, of the RootsWeb Help Desk has complimented me with a request to join her on the RootsWeb desk, which made me feel really good, but my main focus is our cemeteries. I am also experienced in the survey of large and small cemeteries. In addition to the topics above there will be discussions on how to preserve and restore old monuments with the help of a caretaker with over 25 years experience. To join the mail list simply send a message to TX-Cemeteries-L-request@rootsweb.com with only the word subscribe in the subject line and nothing else. If you prefer the Digest send a message to TX-Cemeteries-D-request@rootsweb.com with only the word subscribe in the subject line and nothing else. I look forward to seeing you there, Respectfully, donna brand

    1. MRS. D.K. WILSON : for doctor's files ?
    2. Just thinking....... I have all the hospital records of A.L Rowe from Gaudalupe Valley Hospital, but not his doctor's records. I wonder if the doctor's (D.K.Wilson) own records would have more personal info on A.L. Rowe...but D.K. Wilson has since deceased. I hear his wife is still living so I'm thinking to track her down and see if she still has all her husbands records. Does anyone have a way of checking to see if a MRS. D.K. WILSON lives around there ? OR do you think Guadalupe Valley Hospital would give out her contact numbers? Hmmm. Just thought I'd ask! Thanks, Peggy

    1. THANK YOU ALL!
    2. Dang....I LOVE my listers! I have gotten SUCH GREAT ADVICE on what to do about the "missing" files at UTMB - both on the list and privately. Ya'll are AWESOME! Keep it coming! :-) Guess those folks at UTMB didn't know who they were messing with... With your help, I will get to the bottom of this mess, and find out who messed up where, because someone clearly did. Who knows - I might just get all those files after all :-). Heck, Albion Lee Rowe disappeared - and was found after 45 years! A file shouldn't be too much harder than that was! :-) Big HUGS to each of you who gave me your pricelss input! You guys are simply the BEST! I am forever grateful! Peggy

    3. Peggy, This is Ron, I'm glad you are making progress (though it doesn't feel like it to you I'm certain). OK, here are two suggestions. BY REGISTERED MAIL, RETURN RECEIPT & SIGNATURE REQUESTED. 1. Write the County Judge of Guadalupe County and include COPIES of the entire documentation collection. Show the facts. Request that a POSSIBLE crime may have been committed here and you want the facts. 2. Write the County and District Attorney of Guadalupe Co. (could be the same person) and do the same as above. 3. Write your Federal Representative and include the above. Find and include the Texas State Rep. for Guadalupe Co. contact information with this packet. 4. Find the Texas Representative that has Guadalupe Co. (I don't know myself I don't live there but it could be Rep. Green) and do likewise. 5. A copy of the same packet to the Yo-yo at UTMB PLUS the Legal Dept.; heads of appropriate depts. Pres. of the joint, Head Idiot over Over Idiots. 6. Make a Reg. Letter etc... to the State Board of Health of Texas and make a demand for an investigation. At the bottom of each of the identical packets put this CC: List each of the above folks on a separate line. Then at the bottom of that put BC: (this means blind copy and it makes them wonder who the hell you could send this to that you didn't want them to know about) If I come up with any more I'll email you. I helped write some law in Texas and I worked in Austin for a couple of years to get them passed. The system is geared to a squeaky wheel. Noise makes them nervous and gets attention quicker than patience. Ron McCandless PeggyLynnRowe@aol.com wrote: > Hi again, everyone. 3. Have you requested a copy of the "Deceased Person Report" from the law enforcement agency that may have investigated the original death? States differ, but in many states the Sheriff has original jurisdiction over all death investigations. In many cases, when a dead body is reported, a law enforcement officer responds, gathers pertinent info and writes a report. The report is given a file number and filed with that agency. Good luck!! 1. Advice needed, please!
    2. Hi again, everyone. I need some advice from you great listers! By way of reminder: I am still researching my grandfather, Albion Lee Rowe, who died 2/16/1966 in Sequin, TX after having been missing since 1955 CA. After his death, his remains were donated to the University Of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston (UTMB). Currently, I am trying to find out WHO ok'd the release of his body to UTMB. I now have ordered and received all the hospital records, funeral home records and death certs from County and State. BUT... none of those documents say who signed for his body to be released to the UTMB for medical research. I was hoping to find out who signed him over to them so that I would know who may have taken care of his belongings and who knew him well enough. I have been in contact with UTMB in Galveston - and the Willed Body Program director: Andrew F. Payer, Ph.D. , several times - and he / they have not been very cooperative. This is my dilemma: After being told many times that UTMB 'can't find' the records, (and me pushing & pushing for them) Andrew F. Payer, Ph.D. did find something & I received one page which simply validated that his remains were received into the Willed Body Program (registration number of S.A.B. 9723) but nothing else. SO, I once again request ALL of the file - reminding them that according to their UTBM Handbook of Operating Procedures - policy number 9-15.2 for Authorization of Postmortem Procedures: " * Policy: A properly executed Authorization of Postmortem Procedures form is required to donate a decedent's remains to the Willed Body Program..." etc. (I have noted the requirements at the end of this letter, FYI) I got back a not-so-nice note from Andrew F. Payer that basically said "the files were lost. Period. If you want to pursue this further, call the legal dept." They said they lost (can't find) all files prior to 1970. Can you imagine? So, I'm not quite sure where to go from here. I am certain that all those families, aside from my own would, be appalled to know that their loved ones records were missing/destoyed/thrown out/lost after they donated such a generous gift as their relative's remains to this university! I have a feeling that those records are there -somewhere - but no one wants to bother to look for them. Or, if they are lost, it needs to be reported. Any idea to whom I should write to about this issue to get to the bottom of it? I hate to be a pain to UTMB - but it's the only place left that may have the info I need! I'm thinking the media would have a field day with this issue - and get someone to look a bit harder for files prior to 1966. Or perhaps report to the Texas Education Board? Or State Senator? Or ?? What cha think? Any advice would be welcomed! Thanks so much - Peggy FYI: This is a summary of the UTMB's policy: Donations to UTMB's Willed Body Program occur by: * The decedent's written document. (expressed in either a will or in a drivers licence/personal Identification card executed prior to Sept. 1, 1997.) * The following persons, in the following priority, may authorize donation provided 1) a higher priority person is not available. 2) there is no actual notice of contrary indications by the decedent; and 3) there is no actual notice of opposition by a member of the same or higher priority class: Decedent's spouse Decedent's adult child Either of the decedent's parents Decedent's brother or sister Decedent's guardian at the time of death Any other person authorized or under an obligation to dispose of the body. * Unclaimed remains may be donated to the Willed Body Program 72 hours postmortem by affidavit from a Galveston County Judge. * ALL postmortem procedures including release of remains, autopsy, and anatomical donations are authorized either in writing using the Authorization of Postmortem form or by telephone. Telephone consent requires a follow up confirmation telegram or fax. The Authorization of Postmortem Procedures is not valid until the telegram or fax has been received "

    1. getting census info 1930>
    2. Ron McCandless
    3. 14. Is there any way to receive census information for schedules completed after 1920? To protect privacy of living individuals, access to population schedules is restricted for seventy-two years after the census is taken, so they are not available to researchers during that time. The Personal Service Branch, Bureau of the Census, P.O. Box 1545, Jeffersonville, IN 47131, will provide, for a fee, official transcripts of census records from 1930 to 1990. Access is restricted to whomever the information is about, their authorized representatives, or, in the case of deceased persons, their heirs or administrators. Use Form BC-600 to request information. Ron McCandless

    1. Don Alfonso Thomas Woods - Seguin, Guadalupe County, TX 1870-1880 Censuses
    2. Brett Woods
    3. Does anyone have any information on the Don A.T. Woods who is enumerated on the 1870 and 1880 Guadalupe County TX Censuses. LDS has an entry of a Don Alfonso Thomas Woods who married a Mary Ann Lillard in Harrodsburg, Mercer County, KY on 1 August 1850. This had to be the same individual because Mary Ann died in Guadalupe County TX on 17 March 1872. Mary Ann was born on 15 Fed 1832 in Mercer County KY. "Don Alfonso" was supposedly born around 1830. LDS indicates his birth place as "of KY," so I suppose he really could have been born anywhere. Still, with a name like "Don Alfonso Thomas" one would think he should be reasonably easy to identify. Thanks for any assistance. Brett F. Woods Santa Fe, New Mexico

    3. Looking for information on the family of my gggrandparents Henry J. Woods (b1825 in SC) and his wife Mary "Polly" H. Wingo (b1823 in SC). Mary died at the home of her daughter Margaret "Maggie" (Woods) Hoard, the wife of Noah S. Hoard, in Sabinal, Uvalde County, Texas. Since Henry and Mary were enumerated on the 1880 Greene County TN Census, I suspect she died somewhere around 1885-1888. I believe Henry died in Guadalupe County, around Seguin, about 1883-1885. NOTE: The following is an outline of the Texas descendants Henry Woods and Mary (Wingo) Woods. HENRY J. WOOD was born 1826 in North or South Carolina, and died Aft. 1880 probably in Texas. He married MARY "POLLY" WINGO 1845 in South Carolina, daughter of JOHN WINGO and MARGARET THOMPSON. She was born 31 March 1823 in Spartanburg, South Carolina, and died ABT 1886 in Sabinal, Uvalde County, Texas. Children of HENRY WOOD and MARY WINGO are: i. JAMES H.6 WOODS, b. 1847, Spartanburg, South Carolina. ii. SARAH E. WOODS, b. 1846. iii. JOHN B. WOODS, b. 1849. iv. WILLIAM BERRY WOODS, b. 1850; m. MARGARET KING JONES, 11 April 1882, Greene County, Tennessee. v. THOMAS J. WOODS, b. 1854. vi. LUTHER "LUKE" WOODS, b. 1856; m. SARAH JONES, THE SISTER OF MARGARET JONES. [NOTE: A Luther Woods is enumerated on the 1880 Guadalupe County TX. Census] vii. MARGARET C. WOODS, b. 1857, Spartanburg County, South Carolina; d.1916, Boswell, Oklahoma; m. NOAH SANFORD HOARD, 1882, Greene County, Tennessee; b. 1856, Greene County, Tennessee; d. 1928, Comanche County, Oklahoma. viii. ROBERT H. WOODS, b. 1858. ix. NATHAN WOODS, b. 1851, South Carolina; d. 23 October 1931, Denison, Grayson County, Texas; m. FANNIE ADA BURRELL, 1875, Texas; b. 27 August 1853, South Carolina; d. 03 February 1930, Denison, Grayson County, Texas. JAMES H. WOODS was born 1847 in Spartanburg, South Carolina. He married BARBARA ANN FOX 04 August 1870 in Greene County, Tennessee, daughter of ISAAC FOX and RACHAEL CRADDOCK. She was born 1839 in Greene County, Tennessee. I believe both James and Barbara died in Guadalupe County. Children of JAMES WOODS and BARBARA FOX are: i. LEROY WOODS, b. 28 February 1878, Greene County, Tennessee; d. 10 July 1941, Humble, Texas. ii. RACHEL WOODS, b. 1873, Greene County, Tennessee; d. Humble, Texas. iii. MARY WOODS, b. 1876, married UNK and probably died around Luling, Texas. LEROY WOODS was born 28 February 1878 in Greene County, Tennessee, and died 10 July 1941 in Humble, Texas. He married IDA MAE EGNEW 08 February 1905 in Luling, Texas, daughter of JOHN EGNEW and MATILDA THOMPSON. She was born 30 December 1882 in Luling, Texas, and died 10 December 1961 in Humble, Texas.
