I would like to post a public note of thanks to Eleanor for her generosity in sharing the transcribed extracts from The Daily Examiner. Who would have thought that her very first submission would have been instrumental in solving a mystery that has haunted my research for the past eight years? The piece entitled "Killed near Longstreet" from the 06 September 1898 edition was both welcome and disconcerting. The "Dick May" referenced was my GGgrandfather, Drury G. "Dick" MAY and "Rube" Loggins was his step-son, Reuben Nathaniel LOGGINS. The article is correct when it states that "[b]ad blood [had] existed between the two men for some time". There are anecdotal references to Drury having treated his second wife, Reuben's mother, Gillie H. (ALSTON) LOGGINS MAY, badly. There is also evidence that this was a habitual character flaw as said trait was also referenced in the court minutes when my GGgrandmother, Drury's first wife, Margaret (THIGPEN) MAY, sued him for divorce in Lee County on 15 December 1874. For those who may have an interest, there are some additional facts about the LOGGINS family that may interest you. Reuben's father, Reuben Thomas LOGGINS, was shot and killed on 31 May 1879 in Waller County. At least one family story suggests that this deed was carried out by Drury, which seems unlikely given he eventually married Thomas' widow. Another indicates the murderer to be named Daniel MORRIS. This latter is of interest due to the fact that on 09 July 1879 Daniel's brother, Reuben MORRIS (a lawyer who was active in Waller County politics), was "accidentally" shot and killed by Thomas' father, brother, and a cousin - Reuben, Henry and Willifred, respectively - who were lying in ambush along a roadside near Howth. The relationships between all of these individuals only adds to the intrigue. Drury and Gillie were second cousins through their MAY ancestry. Thomas LOGGINS and Reuben MORRIS were first cousins through the LOGGINS line. The spouses of Thomas and Reuben (MORRIS) were sisters. Just one big, dysfunctional family! ;-) (BTW, I am also related to the LOGGINS family. Another of my GGgrandparents, Mary Ann (LOGGINS) SARTAIN, was a first cousin to Reuben and the MORRIS brothers.) My thanks, again, to Eleanor. She has opened the door to another source of information and, hopefully, an eventual resolution to the tangled web that makes up my direct and collateral family. At the very least, she has solved the mystery of the demise of my GGgrandfather, Drury. Eleanor, if you come across any another references to this killing or the jurisprudence that followed, I would appreciate learning anything else. Herman ------------- Herman I.
