Posted on: Grimes Co. Tx Queries Board URL: http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/USA/Tx/Grimes?read=78 Surname: WOODRUFF ------------------------- There was a J. W. Woodruff listed on the Grimes County tax list for 1846. He was not on the 1850 census for Grimes County. My ancestor John Woodruff arrived in Austin's colony in 1831. Though on October 20, 1832, he was granted 1 league of land in what became Madison County, he resided in Brazoria County until the capital was moved to Houston, where he built a boarding house. He did the same when the capital moved to Austin. (In Austin his step daughter married Anson Jones, the last president.) Perhaps he decided to finally live on his land grant. John (a Baptist preacher) supposedly died in Fort Bend County 27 March 1847, but I think he may have died in that nortwestern portion of Brazoria County that he had lived in early on. Still, he could have been living in Grimes County and been visiting this area when he died. In 1846, the only J. Woodruff in Texas was the J. W. Woodruff in Grimes County. Was there a will filed in Grimes County? Was Madison County ever part of Grimes County? Maybe his land was part of the area that became Madison County.
