My favorite city... I've been doing research (off and on) for a few years now. It's mostly been researching my father's side of the family. My brother and I are the only ones left on my mother's side. I just recently came upon the Grimes County message board and recalled many of the conversations I had had with my Mom and various aunts and uncles over the years and decided to look further. Then I saw your initial posting and "wala"... In reading the history of Grimes County it seems to have been a meca for slavery most of whom arrived from Alabama and Georgia, 1842'ish. That why I need to review to 1870 census. I've been told that my GM was expecting my Mom when she departed Texas and that (I'm assuming) whould have been prior to 1/1897. I'm thinking my GM was 25-35 years of age? So her family should be listed. As for me, I grew up in Parsons, Ks. Most of the relatives worked for the Missouri, Kansas and Texas railroad which I believe had some connection the Grimes County. It appears that once leaving Texas the family settled in Kansas (which was the first free state). I currently reside in Northern California but had also lived in Wash., DC., and Los Angeles. Spent time in between in Europe and the Mid East. I'm told that desendants of the family still hosts an annual gathering in Rose Budd, Texas on July 4th. Something I will look into in 2005. As for your upcoming trip, good hunting.
