I haven't reviewed the 1870 Census... Where do you reside? I'm in California...
If anyone can give Linda some information about this, please contact her at trueava@comcast.net As far as I know she is not on this mailing list. Eleanor Colson My great, great grandfather founded the "Harmony Baptist Church" in 1856 located on Harmony Hill in Navasota, Texas. Our family and church reunion have been existing for nearly 100 years every first Sunday in August. For several years the Church has been closed and falling apart along with the grounds unattended. I visited the grounds this past July since both my parents are buried in the church cemetery. I have been living in Nashville, TN for nearly ten years and I would like to know if you could help me found out if the Texas Historical Society could provide help in up keep for the church and the surrounding church grounds since it is in the historical society. The marker from the society was put on the church grounds in 1979. I understand from relatives in Navasota that the church could be torn down. Please advise or direct me to the person that might assist me if there are funding through the historical society to keep the church established and the grounds attended to. With many thanks. Sincerely, Linda McGinty Beal

Like I said my G-grandfather's name ws David White. David aka Dave was born in 1841 in Navasoto, Grimes County, TX. Unfortunately all relatives that might have been able to tell me something is deceased. He is listed on the 1870 US Census for Grimes County TX, with his wife adeline Foster. Adeline was born in Arkansa. My G-Granmother, Lucinda Powell had 10 children by Dave but was never married to him. All her children went under the name of Powell. On the death certificate of my Grandfather, Elijah Powell, his mother, Lucinda gave her place of birth as Grimes County, TX. It is my understanding that Lucinda's mother was a Creek Indian and her father was an African Stud who came from Africa thru the Carribean.

Stan, You can find information on the Poles of Grimes county through the Polish Genealogical Society of Texas. This organization can be reached on the web at www.pgst.com. There was a Special Edition of the periodical 'PGST NEWS', Vol. No. 3, Fall 1993, which was dedicated solely to Grimes County. A copy of this periodical is still obtainable. Requests for back issues can be sent to Gladys LaRochelle @ geela72@aol.com. I would be happy to help you in any way I can in researching the Poles of Grimes County. Barbara Lee
Does anyone have access to marriage and obituary accounts in Grimes Co news papers for a John Hannibal Stewart marriage to Ophelia Greer in 1902, Navasota. Also, their obituaries? John Stewart died April 29, 1937 & Ophelia died 1938, Navasota and are buried in Oakland Cemetary. Any info would be appreciated. Denise Stewart Saunders
I am still reading all of the lists, daily, and appreciate your efforts very much. I particularly found interesting the reference to the hog freezing; shows the importance of the pork in that time. Lois Perry Richardson
I have read and been told that many Polish people were recruited and brought to Washington County after the Civil War, when farm workers were needed. The same was probably true of Grimes County. Check your history books of the counties. I feel that they have made great contributions in both areas. Lois Perry Richardson
