After each name is the soldier's service number and rank and cause of death. Service numbers that begin with "38" are draftees, 7-digit numbers are enlisted men and numbers with an 0- prefix are officers. A CALL FOR: Panels, papers and stories of the Civil War as related to Montgomery County The Montgomery County Genealogical & Historical Society is sponsoring a conference entitled “The Civil War & Montgomery County: A Historical & Genealogical Odyssey”. The conference will be in the Conroe Towers, Conroe, on April 30, 2005. The conference will be divided into three sections: 1. The issues and causes of the Civil War 2. Montgomery County and the conflict: A. Attitudes toward the war B. County Organization for the war C. Military and personal stories D. Repercussions, socially, economically, politically in the county 3. Genealogical Workshop: Tracing your Civil War ancestors MCGHS invites participation by the general public. Should you have a background in this area of study, have personal documents or letters or be interested in performing a skit, telling a story or presenting a paper, please contact us by November 5th with a brief proposal or overview of your potential contribution. All applicants will be notified of the decision of the screening committee. Please submit the synopsis of your idea or area of interest to the following address: Montgomery County Genealogical and Historical Society Attn: Civil War Conference P.O. Box 867 Conroe, TX 77305 In conjunction with the conference, the MCG&HS also invites participation in an essay contest. Up to three special awards will be presented for the best essays on the topic, “The Civil War and Montgomery County.” The award process is open to all. The purpose of the conference is to encourage an understanding and appreciation of the issues and outcomes of the Civil War, as they relate to Montgomery County. Sounds like we may have the same boy here, but --- I have him married first to Sarah Jane Foster of Walker County, Texas, in 1869, and then after her death to Frances McIver. I do not have the first marriage that you do. Not saying he didn't , but no one in the family has had a record of it. John P. and his new wife (who had been married previously) moved to Hill County, Texas, where he died in 1925. His oldest son by his first wife, James William, was my grandfat her.
