24 Apr 1899 Suicide at Yarborough Preston Lawther, who lived with his mother near Yarborough station and who was married only a few weeks ago, since his return from service with the 2nd Texas volunteer infantry, committed suicide at his home Saturday night by shooting himself with a revolver. The remains were laid away yesterday afternoon. There appears to be no one in the city who is aware of any cause the young man had for such a rash act, and even some express a doubt that the shooting was intentional. He had been cleaning the weapon during the early part of the day and his wife had gone on a viist from home. His mother was in another part of the house and ran to him when the shot was fired; she ask him how it happened and he simply told her it was an accident, and died in about four minutes, the ball entering just below the left nipple. ********************* 27 Apr 1899 Joel Amos Died Yesterday J. J. Amos, better known as Joel, died at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Dave Throop, in this city, at 5 o'clock yesterday afternoon. Deceased came to this vicinity from Col. Horlock's plantation, in Brazoria county, about one month ago, and was engaged in guarding convicts on Horlock & Terrell's place at the time of his death. He was originally from Burleson county, but nothing more than this is reliably known of him here. The remains were laid away in the City Cemetery this morning. ************************ 29 Apr 1899 County Capital Notes Death of Mrs. Caroline Hill Last Night Had Been a Citizen of Anderson for More than Fifty Years - Leaves Several Children Anderson, April 29 - Miss Edna Smith completed her school in Montgomery county and returned home Thursday. Beebee, daughter of W. T. Neblett, has been sick for several days with fever. W. G. Howard is busy making up his reports for his final settlement in May. Mrs. Caroline Hill paid the last debt to mortality last night at 11 o'clock. She had been ill for about ten days, but was not considered seriously ill until a few days ago. Mrs. Hill was about 70 years old. She was only a few years old when she came to Texas with her father, Mr. Hadley. She married Mr. John F. Martin, Sr., and was the mother of several children, as follows: W. T. Martin, John F. Martin, William Martin, deceased, and Mrs. H. H. Wilson. She was also the mother, by her second marriage, to O. H. P. Hill, of Reuben P. Hill, Ben Hill, Mrs. Jenks Harrison and Mrs. Alice Jenning, now deceased. She was the half sister of Josh Hadley, of Roans Prairie. She was one of the oldest inhabitants of Grimes county and lived here when the buffalo and Indian were plentiful. She has lived in Anderson for about fifty years. She was an excellent, kind hearted lady, a member of the Baptist church for many years. Her kind acts and motherly advice will be missed by her many friends. Her remains will be laid to rest in the I. O. O. F. cemetery at 4 p. m. today. Eleanor Colson

Michael Kepler recently informed me that there is a Shiro Preservation and Historical Society meeting each month at the Shiro United Methodist Church. From their website: "The Shiro Preservation and Historical Society (SPS) consists of individuals with an interest in the history of Shiro, Texas. SPS has worked to help improve the Shiro Town Park and to document the history of the families who have lived in Shiro, Texas. Meetings are held the first Saturday of each month at 9:30 a.m. and all are welcome. The meetings are at the Shiro United Methodist Church on Mayfield Street." Here is the url for their website: http://www.rootsweb.com/~txsphs/index.htm They also have a message board on yahoo if you would care to visit it: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/ShiroPreservationSociety/ I will be adding links to the Shiro United Methodist Church and to their listings, hopefully today. Sandy, I think you mean Iola, TX that is located in Grimes County. My grandmother was a Cobb. Her name was Mary Emma Cobb Midkiff. Her father was Jabez York Cobb and her mother was Georgiann Raley. Do you think this is the line you are researching? They were actually in Brazos County which is next to Grimes. My grandmother lived in Grimes after she married. Ours was in Limestone county and I have all his census information from 1850-1910. What I am mostly looking for is any of his descendants who may still be living or information on some of his other siblings. It is possible that some of them died. Pretty sure that at least this sister Nancy died as she wasn't in 1860 census, only in 1850 census. As far as I can tell this other Sikes family whom you are researching is from a different Sikes line (although may be related much further back. I did find a John Herman Sikes (b. 1846) also in Limestone County, TX who was apparently the son of a James Sikes b. 1815 (Green Co., MS and) and his father was Elijah Sikes, son of Jacob son of James son of a Joseph Sikes. That line also had a NB. SIkes, but I can't figure out any relationship between that line and ours. Interesting that this John Herman Sikes also had a daughger named Matty! (b. 1877) There are some postings for Elijah Sikes and his family on rootsweb elsewhere. If you ever make a connection with this family and William Matthew Sikes let me know. I know there were 2 Matthew Sikes' in NC on 1920 census, and the one in Anson is the one I know a bit about, and he was Matthew Guilford Sikes. I have a list of his children, but don't know any connections or their descendants.

All I know is they were from GA; Bryant was in the Confederate army, and Elizabeth Jane filed for a pension. They were parents of James N. and Alice B. Pace - and others that I don't have information on. Alice B. PACE married A. L. BRUMBELOW 23 Jun 1874 in Grimes Co., TX. Alice and A. L. Brumbelow were in Navarro Co., TX in 1880 with daughter, Cally, and then in 1900 Alice was back in Grimes Co., TX, living with her mother, Elizabeth J. Pace, and both were widows. In 1880, Elizabeth J. was living with son James N., 22, in Grimes Co., TX. A. L. BRUMBELOW may have had a brother named William as William Brumbelow married Mary E.
