Hi all.. I am looking for a birth record of an Ernest Williams born in Grimes County on 8/20/1888, per records I found at the State Archives. Unfortunately, at the State Archives, a person is unable to LOOK at the records before requesting a copy and I'd like to confirm or deny that this is my grandfather before purchasing a certified copy. That's just way too expensive for my limited genealogy budget! The Ernest Williams I am looking for is the son of David C Williams and Ellen Jane Walters. I understand from reading past posts to the lists that the courthouse burned some time back and many records were lost. For those of you living in Grimes County, are there any records available for this period? Happy hunting... Dena Stripling __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Yahoo! The task is to determine in which community your ancestors lived and to search the cemeteries of that area. For instance the ALSTON, LOGGINS, and MAY ancestors for which I have an interest lived in or near Anderson and Roans Prairie. Have you done any census work on the target individuals to discover the nearest P.O. to which they resided? Herman ------------- Herman I. MAY Garland, Texas [email protected] Surnames of interest: ADAME, ADAMS, ANDRUS, BONIN, CONNER, GUNN, HALE, JOHNSON, LANNING, LOGGINS, MAURO, MAY, ROGERS, SARTAIN, THIGPEN, TROTTI, and WALTERS. Collateral surnames too numerous to name.
Hello, Does anyone know what cemeteries were in use around 1870? I am trying to find death dates for some Roco ancestors that lived in Grimes County. Thanks, Linda Taylor

Would like to have names of this couple's children. Anyone have pictures of this family? Thanks.

I would love that information!

I had a great-great Uncle Will and Aunt Mollie Ward! I was born in Iola, Tx - My Grandmother was Mollie's Niece, Vallie Jewell Thornton. I have some family info (just have to find it). Lynda
Thaya, There are only Ratliffs in the Ratliff cemetery. I think the book was refering to the fact that Joshua & his first wife were buried in that area but no one knows where the graves are. Ruth
No, according to the Austin Colony Pioneers book Mrs. Sarah Wingfield married a James M. Stephens; and in another book on Washington Co., TX marriages she married James M. Stevens on Nov. 18, 1837. Then in 1842, she married a Lorenzo Sterling. Sarah's maiden name was Sarah Jane Wingfield and her children lived with Caleb Wallace in Grimes County, TX until Caleb died in 1844. Caleb Wallace was married to two of Sarah's daughters; first to Elizabeth, and after her death he married Elvira Wingfield. Thanks for checking the Grimes Co. cemetery books. I will check in Washington Co. also.
The John M Stephens that married Saray Wingfield in Washington Co. was among a list of Stephens on the first tax roll: James Stephens, John M. Stephens, John Stephens, J.S. Stephens, Miles G. Stephens, Ashley R. Stephens, Sarah Stephens, Thomas Stephens and Thomas J. Stephens. I found them listed in the "Austin Colony Pioneers" by Worth S. Ray. It says that Ashley R. Stephens was in the battle of San Jacinto, and that Thomas Stephens was listed as one of Austin's original "Three Hundred". I don't know what relationship they are all to each other. In one of the books listing Washington Co. marriages, John M. Stephens is listed as "Stevens".
Hi Dianne I found your note on the Grimes mail list, and wanted to let you know if you are interested in the Heinrich family, there is a Heinrich Family website at: www.geocities.com/~gdheinrich This family was in Fayette Co. TX - they are not mine. I just had a very dear friend from my childhood who was a member of the family. I am copying the Grimes Co. mail list in case anyone else would like to visit this site. Joanne
Ruth, Thanks for replying. As I'm sure you guessed from my query my husband is descended from Joshua and his first wife Obedience. As Obedience preceded him in death... but after he received his land through Austin's Colony... I would be inclined to think that the two graves would be those of Obedience and Joshua. Especially as his second wife Joyce remarried. Do you think that there might be a possibility that the "Ratliff cemetery on the hill" could have grown up around those two original graves. The John F. Martin listed in the Oakland Cemetery Book would have to be John F. Martin, Jr. son of Caroline Hadley Martin Hill and the John F. Martin that I am looking for as he died in 1846 just two years after JFM, Jr. was born. But thanks for the name of the cemetery. I have been very careful to document everything that I have added to my database and really needed the name of that cemetery to keep it up. Thaya
Thaya, From Grimes co cemetery book #4 Oakland cemetery Hugh Hamill Wilson US Army Confederate tombstone & Master Mason 9 Jan 1838 - 24 Dec 1913 J. F. Martin C.S.A. 1844 - 1918 ( same cemetery) In another section of this book (no cemetery given) Mrs H. H. Wilson age 70 yrs 7 mos 3days died 22 Feb 1917 From Grimes co Cemetery book #2 p 251 & 252 Joshua Hadley born 1786 NC - died 1845 in a fall from a horse He was buried there on the Hadley land. ( Roans Prairie) Now the Hadley land was sold to two Ratliff brothers( Lorenzo & Benjamin Franklin Ratliff (my line) ) I have been there several times & have only seen a Ratliff cemetery on the hill. The book does go on to say, At the death of Joshua Hadley, he left a widow Joyce Vickers Floyd Hadley & 3 children -Joshua, Floyde, & Anthony D as well as 2 stepsons, David B. Floyd & James Vickers Floyd. Joyce later married Hugh McGuffin The book states another burial would be there with Hadley. ( The following is data from "Early History of Grimes co" by Blair, a copy of which is in the Navasota library - Grimes co ,Tx ) Obedience Grantham Hadley born 1800 NC or Tenn. She was the first wife of Joshua Hadley. Their land application was dated Feb 1831. They had 5 children - Denny Porterfield, Travis King, Caroline, Grantham H, & Henry F. Obedience G. Hadley died in 1839 I hope this helps you. Ruth Bowen
Sharron, I didn't find a Sarah Stephens or Sarah Sterling in any of the 4 vols of Grimes co Cemetery books but I did find something rather interesting. I'm not sure this will help you but I'm going to send it anyway. From: Book 3 - Grimes co Cemetery book , page 95 Potter Cemetery James M. Sterling born Throup co,Ga 22 Feb 1826 - Died at his home in Planterville 23 Apr 1871 - ( on same stone) Eliz Sterling Born Butts co, Ga 7 Aug 1832 - Died at her home in Planterville on 14 Sept 1871 ( Could Sarah have been a nickname? The ladies of that time used to use nicknames such as Polly stood for Mary & Hannah for several other names or maybe her name was Sarah Elizabeth.) I hope this helps you. Ruth Bowen

(Farris) Martin (first husband of Caroline) Margaret (Maggie) Obedience (Martin) Wilson (daughter of John F. and Caroline) Hugh Martin Wilson (son of Margaret Obedience (Martin) and H. H. We did find Hugh Hamill Wilson in the large cemetery in Navasota, Grimes County, Texas. Can someone tell me what the name of that cemetery is as it was not on the gate to the cemetery. Thanks, Thaya (Skirvin) Elrod

Researching: Wingfields & Wallaces in Grimes Co.: If someone has the cemetery books of Grimes Co., please check to see if you have listed a Sarah Stephens or a Sarah Sterling who died April 12, 1861. She was first married to Owen Wingfield, then to James M. Stephens in 1837, and then to Lorenzo Sterling in 1842 in Washington Co. She did have land next to the Elizabeth Wallace estate (part of the O. Wingfield headright) in Grimes Co. in 1852, so she may have continued to use the name of Stephens after the death of /or seperation from Sterling. Thanks in advance, Sharron Godwin
Hi Sharron; I am a STEPHENS researcher, looking a several lines. I am curious about James M. Stephens in your posting to the Grimes County List. Do you have any information on James, I can not place him in a family?
