Hereford) To: [email protected] Hi Mary Ann: The Montgomery County History Book published in 1981 has information concerning Grimes County from the prehistory to 1846 when it was separated from Montgomery County at the time we became a state. This is true of Walker, Liberty, San Jacinto, and parts of Waller and Madison Counties. I am sure you know all of that area from the Brazos to the Trinity rivers east and west and from the Old San Antonio Road to Spring Creek was Montgomery County in the Republic of Texas. I do not know if that would be useful for your purposes. If so please let me know and we will get a book or books to you as long as they last. We plan to do another book in the near future. My GGGgrandfather obtained a land grant from Mexico in 1831 located between Richards and Anderson which was in Montgomery County now Grimes County. That story is not in the 1981 edition, but I plan for it to be in the future book. When we begin the new book would you like to be a contributor for Grimes County History in the days before 1846? We are looking for help! I do not know if I have answered your question, but if I can help in any way just let me know. Charlie Hereford 2003 Timber Lane Conroe, Texas 77301 (936) 756-9171
Don't mind helping Montgomery Co. Schools out but having been a school teacher, I know they have budgets for local historical items. Is there also a "History of Grimes County" that we who are connected to Grimes Co. ancestors can purchase for their schools? Your efforts are admirable and I appreciate it...I will send you funds for two books in the Memory of Mr. and Mrs. Bob Strawn and Mr. and Mrs. George Martin. MaryAnn Bartlett Bartlett, Bell Co., TX
The Montgomery County Genealogical and Historical Society only has about 100 copies of The History of Montgomery County left. We have just started a program to ensure all schools in Montgomery County have a copy of this wonderful book. To offset expensives, we need sponsors to help fund this program. The books are now selling for $35.00 (plus $5.00 for postage). Bluebonnet Sponsorship=$10.00-$25.00 Mockingbird Sponsorship=$50.00-$100.00 Lone Star Sponsorship=$200.00-$500.00 To sponsor, please send your name (or company name), address, phone and email address along with payment to MCGSH P. O. Box 867 Conroe, TX 77305-0867 Please be sure and mark it as sponsor. Vol. 2 is now in the planning stages. This will take quite some time, so publication is not expected for 4-5 years. It has been 20 years since Vol. 1 was published, so there is lots to add. I will let everyone know when we will be accepting family information, so don't wait to start on this. Start getting the information ready along with photos. thanks, Jane Keppler

Please direct your answer to Victoria at [email protected] or [email protected] . I know you must get about a hunderd e-mail a day asking for help, but I have been trying to get imformation from Grimes County for about 4 years. I know my greatfather (James Franklin Smith) was born in your county on 1-27-1883 to Samuel (Sam) Smith and Armanda Elizabeth Saxon Smith. I also know he had a sister born two years before him in this county. I don't know if Sam was born there, but I do know he was born in 1850's. Armanda was born in 1850's but I don't know where. I do know they came to Georgia because they are both buried here. I wouldn't ask for help but it seem my family roots ends in your county. I know that over the years my family have said that Sam and Armanda was raised by Indians, but looking at my greatfater picture I believe he could be part indian. Any help you can give , I would be forever thankful for Victoria Peters Barnesville Georgia [email protected] or [email protected]

Does anyone know the location of the house built by John H. Stewart in Navasota. It was left to the Methodist Church, in the 1938 will of Tennessee Greer, to be use as a home for destitute elderly women. The will stated it had to be called the Ophelia Greer Home for John's wife Ophelia. Denise Stewart Saunders
