Regular Meeting of East Texas Genealogical Society, Tyler, TX Saturday, March 12, 2005 Tyler Public Library - Taylor Auditorium 2:00 p.m. Speaker: Lois E. Myers Program: "Heirlooms on Tape" When the public record leaves gaps in your family's story, you must look to other resources to learn such things as family values and traditions. Our guest speaker, Lois E. Myers, will show you how oral history can give life and heart to the names, dates and places of your genealogical research. You can discover through this practical workshop principles of oral history interviewing for preserving the history of your family and your community. She will give practical suggestions for selecting topics, tips on interviewing, and resources for further study. Ms. Myers is senior lecturer in oral history and associate director of the Institute for Oral History at Baylor University. She holds bachelor's and master's degrees from Baylor, with concentrations in American literature, culture, and history. She is author of the book, Letters by Lamplight: A Woman's View of Everyday Life in South Texas 1873-l883 (Baylor University Press, 1991). Her recent oral history project on the rural church is highlighted in the book, The Rock Beneath the Sand: The Country Church in Texas (Texas A&M University Press, 2003), co-authored with historian Rebecca Sharpless and photographer Clark Baker. Along with other Baylor faculty, she is editing The Research Handbook of Oral History, under contract with AltaMira Press. Lois has conducted numerous workshops on oral history methodology and is active in the national Oral History Association. As secretary/treasurer of the Texas Oral History Association since 1987, she works with a wide variety of Texans and others who are involved in recording the histories of their communities, occupations, families, and businesses.
