    3. Regular Meeting of East Texas Genealogical Society, Tyler, TX Saturday, February 12, 2005 Tyler Public Library - Taylor Auditorium 2:00 p.m. Speaker: Edith G. Smith and Vivian Lehman Program: "No Land...Only Slaves" For those researching slave ancestors and those who enjoy the value of helping others research, Edith Smith, and her daughter, Vivian Lehman will be discussing how to do slave research. Edith and Vivian recently completed their ninth volume in a series entitled No Land.Only Slaves which they abstracted from the deed records of the Ark-La-Tx region this year. Mrs. Smith, a retired teacher, is a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution, and has also published Index to the Biographical Section of Fannin County Folks and Facts and Some of the Descendants of Samuel Cross, Innkeeper and Planter. Edith will discuss the value of delving into obscure records found in the county clerk's office with clues about abstracting the important details which she calls "Finding Gold in Your Old Pocketbook". Vivian Lehman currently works for the U.S. Department of Commerce, Bureau of the Census, Field Division in Dallas, Texas. She has published Some Smiths of North East Alabama and North West Georgia. Vivian will be discussing "Slave laws of the Ark-La-Tx" and how they apply to research in those states.
