    3. Regular Meeting of East Texas Genealogical Society, Tyler, TX Saturday, April 9, 2005 Tyler Public Library - Taylor Auditorium 2:00 p.m. Speaker: Don Raney Program: "Identify the Ancestors of Anna Miller From Claiborne Parish, LA" The quantity of good genealogical information on the Internet continues to grow. It is now possible to solve many of your "brick wall" genealogical research problems with information available at several key genealogical sites on the Internet. This lecture is a step by step "how to" example of the research techniques that can be used to solve many difficult genealogical problems using sources that are available on the Internet. Miller is the seventh most common surname which results in the typical research problems in identifying ancestors with a common surname. This lecture demonstrates the Internet research techniques used to identify and document three generations of the Miller family using only Internet resources. Mr. Raney was able to identify the parents of his great great grandmother, Anna Miller, among the 22 Miller families in Claiborne Parish, LA in the 1850 Census. Clues found on Internet sites using land records, census records, USGenWeb County Sites, and Advanced Google searches led me from Claiborne Parish, LA to Warren (now Allen) County KY, to Pendleton District (now Pickens County), SC where the Miller family settled about 1780. Mr. Raney is a sixth generation Texan who has been an active genealogist for twenty-five years. He teaches beginning, intermediate, and advanced TMG genealogy courses at Richmond College. He is a past director of the Dallas Genealogy Society and GENTECH and a life member of the San Jacinto Descendants. He is the author of Martin Varner, Texas Pioneer: 1785-1844. He has been a speaker at numerous conferences and society meetings throughout the state. Following a short refreshment period, at approximately 3:30 p.m., the Computer Interest Group of the East Texas Genealogical Society will meet. Beverly Odom will present a program on "The Many Uses of the Computer".
