    3. LLOYD BOCKSTRUCK FEATURED SPEAKER AT ETGS SEMINAR The East Texas Genealogical Society will conduct an all-day seminar Saturday, September 13, at the First Christian Church, Conference & Scout Rooms (behind the Church), 4202 South Broadway, Tyler, Texas. Mr. Bockstruck is a frequent lecturer at local, state and national genealogical societies. He is well known as an outstanding speaker and we are pleased that he will be conducting the following sessions during our seminar. FINDING SUBSTITUTES FOR BIRTH AND DEATH RECORDS - Vital statistics are a major record source because they follow an ancestor from birth to death. A person’s lifespan dates may provide the data to separate him or her from others of the same name. Vital statistics may also serve the purpose of identifying the parents. Learning to let other record groups reveal the same information is a lesson all genealogists must master. LESSER USED GENEALOGICAL RECORDS - Beyond deeds, wills, marriage records, and censuses, many other records remain for the enterprising and ingenious genealogist to seek out. While they vary from one jurisdiction to another and from one century to another, it becomes imperative to consider lesser used records in order to extend a pedigree and to confirm or refute the one you have prepared. GENEALOGICAL RESEARCH IN THE SOUTHERN COLONIES - Unlike the New England and Middle Colonies, the Southern Colonies were directly under the control of the crown. They were primarily rural so their land records are a mainstay in documenting the existence of ancestors and providing filiations. During the Civil War there were significant record losses. Their political philosophy and religion caused them to have a different approach toward record creation. NEWSPAPER GENEALOGY - “Read all about it” was the cry of newsboys at street corners across the country in the last century. Newspapers complement civil records in town halls and county courthouses; they also offer substitutes for missing civil records due to fire, theft, tornadoes, and floods. Determining their availability and whereabouts are also challenges for the genealogists, but the dividends are worth the effort. Lloyd Bockstruck is the supervisor of the Genealogy Section of the Dallas Public Library and his column “Family Tree” appears weekly in the Dallas Morning News. He is a faculty member at several genealogical institutions and is a fellow of the National Genealogical Society. He has received numerous awards and honors including the NGS Filby Award for Outstanding Genealogical Librarian. Registration will begin at 8:30 am. The seminar will be from 9:00 until 3:30 pm. The cost is $25.00 per person if registered before September 1, or $30.00 per person after September 1. Participants should bring a sack lunch or plan to eat at nearby restaurants. Soft drinks and light snacks will be provided. Visit our Web site at www.rootsweb.com/txetgs/meetings to print a registration form. Or, call Scott at 903-592-6576; or send an e-mail to scottfitzgerald@tyler.net for more information.

    1. [TXGregg] Genealogy Scam
    2. Elaine Martin
    3. For those of you that do not receive Dick Eastman's newsletter, you might find the below subject informative. Elaine Martin SPECIAL EDITION: Eastman's Online Genealogy Newsletter I have written a number of times about a genealogy-related scam that operates under a variety of names, including GenSeekers.com, GenealogyGiants.com and more. In the July 7 edition of the newsletter, I identified the owner/operator of this "business" as 21-year-old Elias Abodeely of Cedar Rapids, Iowa. Since then, I have had conversations with several people in Iowa about this "business." I can now report that earlier today the Cedar Rapids police department arrested Elias Abodeely for his activities with GenSeekers.com and the other Web sites he operates. KWWL television in Iowa is now reporting that Cedar Rapids Police have made an arrest after a two year Internet crime investigation. The crimes involved genealogy websites. Today police arrested Elias Abodeely II of Cedar Rapids.. He faces four charges: 1st degree theft, identity theft, money laundering, and ongoing criminal conduct. Police say they expect to file charges against more suspects. Details are still developing. Keep an eye on the newsletter Discussion Board at http://www.eogn.com for updates. I will also be writing about this in the next newsletter. You can read my earlier article at http://www.eogn.com/archives/news0327.htm. - Dick Eastman

    1. [TXGregg] Military Records Online
    2. Elaine Martin
    3. This came through a list I subscribe to, so I thought I would pass it on for all to see. Elaine Co-CC TXGenWeb Counties: http://txgenes.com/TxGregg/ http://txgenes.com/TxUpshur/ http://txgenes.com/TxMarion/ Webmaster: http://txgenes.com/TxPostcards/ ------------------- Subject: Requesting Military Records Online The National Personnel Records Center has made it easier for veterans with computers and Internet access to obtain copies of documents from their military files. Military veterans and the next of kin of deceased former military members may now use a new online military personnel records system to request documents. Other individuals with a need for documents must still complete the Standard Form 180 which can be downloaded from the Forms Page (http://www.military.com/Resources/ResourceSubmittedFileView?file=Forms.htm). The new web based application was designed to provide better service on these requests by eliminating the records center's mailroom processing time. Veterans and next of kin may access this application at this page (http://www.archives.gov/research_room/vetrecs/index.html). An individual's complete service record is available to the former service member or, if deceased, to his/her next of kin (parents, spouse, or children). Limited information (such as dates of service, awards, and training) is available to anyone. Not available to the general public is information which would invade an individual's privacy; for example, medical records, Social Security number, or present address. The St. Louis Center receives many requests for service records each week, so a request will be processed with greater speed and accuracy if the requester uses a Standard Form 180, "Request Pertaining to Military Records. If requesting the records of a relative, a requester should mention the relationship to the former member (brother, uncle, or other). There is no charge for this service to former service members or their next of kin. For others, a nominal fee is charged for research and reproduction costs. You may submit more than one request per envelope or fax, but submit a separate request (either SF 180 or letter) for each individual whose records are being requested. Send by Mail: National Personnel Records Center Military Personnel Records 9700 Page Avenue St. Louis, MO 63132-5100 Send by Fax: 314-801-9195. The Center will respond in writing by U.S. Mail. Order Processing Time Response times for records requested from the National Personnel Records Center (NPRC) vary greatly depending on the nature of the request. For example, the NPRC Military Records Facility currently has a backlog of 180,000 requests and receives approximately 5,000 requests per day. Routine requests for separation documents currently require only 2-4 weeks for servicing. However, requests that involve reconstruction efforts due to the 1973 fire or older records which require extensive search efforts may take much longer. The average turnaround time on all requests is currently running at approximately 12 weeks.

    1. [TXGregg] Online Vital Statistics
    2. Elaine Martin
    3. I received this through another list and I thought everyone would find it interesting. This article was in the Houston Chronicle this morning. <Online vital records have a bumpy history <By MIC BARNETTE <The year 2000 was great for Texas genealogists. <In June 2000 the Texas Bureau of Vital Statistics placed several statewide vital records indexes on its Web site. Researchers were able to go to the TBVS Web <site and access the records at their leisure. The data, however, was awkwardly arranged in separate files that corresponded to the year of the event. Each year <had to be searched individually. <Rootsweb.com, a genealogical research Web site, purchased a set of the Texas vital records data and prepared it for use on its Web site. An enterprising <programmer at Rootsweb combined the single-year files and created a search engine that allows users to search all the data files in a fraction of a second. <Unfortunately, the gains of 2000 were lost when questions of privacy were raised in November 2001 in a California newspaper article. The California governor <threatened to sue Rootsweb for having the state's vital records indexes online. Within a week Texas Bureau of Vital Records officials followed California's lead <and demanded that Rootsweb unplug the online Texas databases. Rootsweb complied. <The Texas databases that were online included statewide indexes to marriages 1966-1995, divorces 1968-1997, deaths 1963-1998, general indexes to births <1926-1949 and the summary indexes to births 1950-1995. General indexes, incidentally, list names of parents, while summary indexes do not. <In Texas, records of marriages and divorces have been maintained on a county level since the days of the Republic of Texas in the 1830s. Counties began <reporting this information to the state in 1966 and 1968, respectively. Births and deaths were kept on a statewide basis in 1903. <Births and deaths 1903-1997 are available on microfilm and microfiche at courthouses across the state. <Earlier this month, Texas Gov. Rick Perry signed SB 861, which closes birth records for 75 years. This law goes into effect Sept. 1. Currently, birth records are <open after 50 years. Death records were not a part of SB 861 and remain available to researchers. Indexes for both births and deaths remain open to researchers. <There is some good news for those who would like to research Texas vital records indexes without going to a courthouse. Houston genealogist Hugh Adams has <taken the vital records indexes formerly online at the Texas Bureau of Vital Statistics Web site and formatted them on 11 CD-ROMs. Each letter of the alphabet <on each CD includes data from births 1926-1995, marriages 1996-2000, divorces 1968-2000 and deaths 1964-1998. A demonstration Web site may be viewed <at www.tvrview.com/. <The 11 CDs contain surname data arranged alphabetically. Disk 1 covers surnames beginning with A, D and E; disk 2, B; disk 3, C; disk 4, F and G; disk 5, H <and I; disk 6, J-L; disk 7, M; disk 8, N-Q; disk 9, R and T; disk 10, S and X; and disk 11, U-Z. <The CDs are available from TVRView-H.C. Adams, 12180 Greenspoint Drive, PMB No. 196, Houston, TX 77060-2002. The 11-CD set is $129; individual <disks are $15.50. Shipping for the set is $4.95; $2.50 for individual CDs. I am not pushing anyone buying the above, nor do I know these people or anything about these disks. Please do not contact me for more info.....I don't know any more than you do. Elaine Martin Co-CC TXGenWeb Counties: http://txgenes.com/TxGregg/ http://txgenes.com/TxUpshur/ http://txgenes.com/TxMarion/ Webmaster: http://txgenes.com/TxPostcards/ **Don't argue with an idiot.....the people watching may not be able to tell the difference.**
