    1. [TXGregg] Gregg County Genealogy Society Oct. Meeting
    2. Janice Walker
    3. The Gregg County Genealogy Society will meet Tuesday, October 7, 2003 at the Longview Public Library. Personal genealogical sharing and visiting among members and guests begins at 6:30 PM with the business meeting and program at 7:00 PM. Visitors are always welcome. Back by popular demand will be Stroud Morton who will demonstrate how to improve downloaded images in whatever imaging software program you have available on your computer. In June Stroud helped us to understand how to download census pages from the Tex Share program's Heritage Quest site. This site is a fee based site but through the Longview Public Library you can access U. S. census' and numerous books that they have on line. You do need a Longview Library card and an access code that you can get from Linda Laminack in the Family History Room. If you are not from the Longview area, ask your library about this service. 1. [TXGregg] Tyler TX ETGS Meeting 10/11/03
    2. Scott Fitzgerald
    3. Regular Meeting of East Texas Genealogical Society, Tyler, TX Saturday, October 11, 2003 Tyler Public Library - Taylor Auditorium 2:00 p.m. Speaker: Don Raney Program: "How to Find Your Ancestor's Maiden Name" All researchers know how difficult it can be to locate information about female ancestors before 1900. As a result, genealogies and family histories often show only a first name for female ancestors for this time period. Guest speaker, Don Raney will share research tips and strategies to guide you in your search for your maternal ancestors. He will describe the best techniques for gathering facts and constructing a time line, and then, searching various records such as marriage documents, tombstone inscriptions, censuses, obituaries, newspapers, and death certificates. Many examples of successful research efforts will be demonstrated during his presentation. Mr. Raney is a sixth generation Texan who has been an active genealogist for twenty-five years. He currently teaches Beginning, Intermediate, Advanced and TMG Genealogy courses at Richland College. He is a past Director of the Dallas Genealogy Society and GENTECH and a life member of the San Jacinto Descendants. He has been a speaker at numerous conferences and society meetings throughout the state including the Dallas Genealogy Society Fall Symposium, the Houston Genealogical Forum, and the Angelina College Genealogy Conference. Following a short refreshment period, at approximately 3:30 p.m., the Computer Interest Group of the East Texas Genealogical Society will meet. Mary Love Berryman will present a program on "Introduction to Web Paging". The prime requisites for all materials are that they should be as useful in 50 years as they are today. We will strive to publish a variety of material on each of the six counties represented by ETGS. Although exceptions may be made, material relating to our six counties prior to 1900 are of the most interest. Articles concerning other areas will be used occasionally if of sufficient interest to many people. Material from old and/or rare unindexed books will also be considered. Priority will be given to courthouse, Bible and cemetery records, but we are very interested in publishing the following types of source material: Biographical Family Sketches, Lodge Records, Old Diary Accounts, Census Records, Marriage Records, Old Letters, Commissioners Court Minutes, Military Muster Rolls, Post Offices, Confederate Records, Mortality Schedules, Probate Abstracts, Deed and Land Records, Newspaper Clippings, School Lists, Jury Lists, Obituaries of East Texas Citizens, Tax Lists, Library Microfilm Holdings, and Voter Lists. When submitting cemetery records, please give exact location of cemetery, date copied and name of copier. PUBLICATION: To be considered for publication, an item or article should have a reliable reference and should not be based entirely on "tradition." We do not wish to publish items from books now in print, however, such references may be used as footnotes to clarify sources. Please be certain all material is legible. Xerox copies can be used, but typewritten articles are preferred to avoid errors in transcribing handwritten material. Please include your name, address, e-mail address and day-time telephone number with all material submitted. The editor must retain the right to accept or reject materials and to edit those chosen for publications. Credit will be given to each contributor. If requested, material may be returned, otherwise it will become property of the Society. QUERIES: Queries submitted by members will be published as space is available. Please type or print each query on a separate sheet of paper. Capitalize all surnames and include at lease one date and place. Limit your query to 8 or 10 typed lines and carefully recheck for accuracy. SUBMISSION DEADLINES: Spring issue - January 15 Summer issue - March 15 Fall issue - June 15 Winter issue - September 15 ETGS welcomes any suggestions for improving our publications. We also welcome constructive criticism. Let us know what you would like to see published. Please send all material to: June Everheart, Editor (e-mail: everheart@tyler.net ). ETGS does not assume responsibility for errors of fact or opinions expressed by contributors. However, we strive to publish reliable source material, and errors will be corrected when submitted in writing. ETGS POLICY ON THE REPLACEMENT OF PERIODICALS The East Texas Genealogical Society strives to publish a maximum of genealogical information at minimum costs, in order that the Society's publications may be widely available to all who are interested. Consistent with this objective, certain restraints are necessary in regard to replacement of periodicals, which were not received by the intended recipients. Hence, if a member, institution or other organization fails to receive a copy of THE EAST TEXAS FAMILY RECORDS, the quarterly, ETGS must be notified within six months of the publication date of that issue. Otherwise, the intended recipient will be supplied a replacement copy only if copies are still available and only at the published price. The ETGS Newsletter, "The Bulletin," primarily carries news of short-term interest and back issues will not normally be supplied. If there is a special need for back issues, the recipient will be quoted a price for which they may be ordered. PUBLICATION DATES ARE: MARCH 31, JUNE 30, SEPTEMBER 30, and DECEMBER 31 of each year. 1. [TXGregg] Tx Land Grant Database
    2. Elaine Martin
    3. This came via a newsletter I get. Thought it might be of interest. Elaine Texas Land Grant Database Placed Online The General Land Office for state of Texas has placed its land grant database online. To search the database, please point your browsers at http://www.glo.state.tx.us/archives/landgrant.html >From this page you can search the database, Texas' map collection, or get more information about genealogical research in Texas. The database has more than 420,000 records and is searchable by several variables including County, Original Grantee, Title Date, and Patent Date. The Land Grant Database contains a listing of all original land grants that have been issued an abstract number by the Texas General Land Office. Original land grants are defined as grants of land issued by the governments of Texas: Spain, Mexico, the Republic of Texas, and the State of Texas. The Land Grant Database is not a complete listing of all land grant documents or records relating to a specific individual that may be on file in the GLO. It does not contain records of invalid Mexican land grants, cancelled or rejected grants, or documents from the Agency Special Collection. The easiest way to determine if an individual has a land grant listed in the database is to simply type that person's name into the Original Grantee bar, then click the Search key. For example, a search for "Elias Spray" under original grantee found one entry in Montague county -- a grant of 640 acres originally patented on 26 June 1855 to Elias Spray, deceased. This database does not contain information on the subsequent subdivision of this land. Record of subsequent sale, subdivision, etc., is a matter of county record.

An avid amateur photographer, he has studied and practices many different styles of photographic retouching and restoration. He is a member of the National Association of Photoshop Professionals Interest and research in family genealogy led to the realization that there was a need for expert and artistic restoration of many of his family photographs. In his business, Mr. Skidmore uses state of the art computer technology to digitally restore photographic images to close to original condition. This includes imaging manipulation, forensic and analysis software that allows valuable antique images to be saved from certain loss due to age, deterioration, or damage.
