Our dues are $20/year which entitle you to all four quarterlies for that year and all bulletins from the time you join. Back issue quarterlies if available are sold for $5.00/each with postage paid. For more information on ETGS, you may go to our website: http://www.rootsweb.com/~txetgs/ or you may contact me at: scottfitzgerald@tyler.net SUBMISSIONS: East Texas Family Records welcomes previously unpublished source material from its readers. The prime requisites for all materials are that they should be as useful in 50 years as they are today. We will strive to publish a variety of material on each of the six counties represented by ETGS. Although exceptions may be made, material relating to our six counties prior to 1900 are of the most interest. Articles concerning other areas will be used occasionally if of sufficient interest to many people. Material from old and/or rare unindexed books will also be considered. Priority will be given to courthouse, Bible and cemetery records, but we are very interested in publishing the following types of source material: Biographical Family Sketches, Lodge Records, Old Diary Accounts, Census Records, Marriage Records, Old Letters, Commissioners Court Minutes, Military Muster Rolls, Post Offices, Confederate Records, Mortality Schedules, Probate Abstracts, Deed and Land Records, Newspaper Clippings, School Lists, Jury Lists, Obituaries of East Texas Citizens, Tax Lists, Library Microfilm Holdings, and Voter Lists. When submitting Bible records, please give name of person possessing Bible, give date of publication, if known, make sure all information is legible and accurate if copied by hand. When submitting cemetery records, please give exact location of cemetery, date copied and name of copier. PUBLICATION: To be considered for publication, an item or article should have a reliable reference and should not be based entirely on "tradition." We do not wish to publish items from books now in print, however, such references may be used as footnotes to clarify sources. Please be certain all material is legible. Xerox copies can be used, but typewritten articles are preferred to avoid errors in transcribing handwritten material. Please include your name, address, e-mail address and day-time telephone number with all material submitted. The editor must retain the right to accept or reject materials and to edit those chosen for publications. Credit will be given to each contributor. If requested, material may be returned, otherwise it will become property of the Society. QUERIES: Queries submitted by members will be published as space is available. Please type or print each query on a separate sheet of paper. Capitalize all surnames and include at lease one date and place. Limit your query to 8 or 10 typed lines and carefully recheck for accuracy. SUBMISSION DEADLINES: Spring issue - January 15 Summer issue - March 15 Fall issue - June 15 Winter issue - September 15 ETGS welcomes any suggestions for improving our publications. We also welcome constructive criticism. Let us know what you would like to see published. Please send all material to: June Everheart, Editor (e-mail: everheart@tyler.net ). ETGS does not assume responsibility for errors of fact or opinions expressed by contributors. However, we strive to publish reliable source material, and errors will be corrected when submitted in writing. ETGS POLICY ON THE REPLACEMENT OF PERIODICALS The East Texas Genealogical Society strives to publish a maximum of genealogical information at minimum costs, in order that the Society's publications may be widely available to all who are interested. Consistent with this objective, certain restraints are necessary in regard to replacement of periodicals, which were not received by the intended recipients. Hence, if a member, institution or other organization fails to receive a copy of THE EAST TEXAS FAMILY RECORDS, the quarterly, ETGS must be notified within six months of the publication date of that issue. Otherwise, the intended recipient will be supplied a replacement copy only if copies are still available and only at the published price. The ETGS Newsletter, "The Bulletin," primarily carries news of short-term interest and back issues will not normally be supplied. If there is a special need for back issues, the recipient will be quoted a price for which they may be ordered. PUBLICATION DATES ARE: MARCH 31, JUNE 30, SEPTEMBER 30, and DECEMBER 31 of each year. James W. Vines was a housepainter married to Rachel Vines. They had children Willie, Charlie, Georgia, Hattie, and Jenny. Hattie married Charles C. West and lived near Houston. Rachel was still in Gregg Co. in 1900. James may have been in Marion co. Haven't been able to find information on the other children. This family may have been related to Lucian Jerome Evans who married Eugenia Allen in 1880. Lucian died about 1996 in Tyler. Looking for information on Lucian who was a housepainter. Eugenia was from Hughes Springs and moved back there after Lucian's death.

Regular Meeting of East Texas Genealogical Society, Tyler, TX Saturday, July 10, 2004 Tyler Public Library - Taylor Auditorium 2:00 p.m. Speaker: Jeri Steele Program: "A Methodologist's Tips to Research" Are you a weekend genealogist? Do you have long periods of time between research trips? Do you forget from one trip to the library to the next what books you have examined? Did you ever want to infuse the very experienced genealogist's knowledge into your brain? Then you need a methodology for your research. The dictionary defines a methodology as "A documented approach for performing activities in a coherent, consistent, accountable, and repeatable manner." A methodologist is one who practices a particular methodology. Once you realize that genealogy can be approached in a disciplined manner, then you can repeat the process that experienced genealogists use. Each cycle in research consists of 4 steps: Evaluate, Transcribe, Analyze, and Define new goals. Guest Speaker, Jeri Steele will describe these steps and give examples including some forms she currently uses. Tips on Research will be presented within the framework of this research cycle. These will include: Evaluate: evaluating genealogy sources and the repository. (Web page, library, archives) Transcribe: Making out that bad place on the microfilm or the unreadable word. Analyze: How to determine that you have missing information in a document. Define/Design New Goals: What would help me most in my research goal? Jeri is a software engineer for Texas Instruments. Her knowledge of defining repeatable processes comes from that software engineering discipline. She has been on the staff of The Colony Family History Center for over 9 years and a professional genealogist for over 12 years. Her specialty is North & East Texas records. Her grandmother's 4 grandparents were all in Smith County by 1852. Whether it's teaching hands-on computer classes or giving a society program, Jeri enjoys getting people excited about genealogy research. A recent attendee exclaimed, "I'm going to be up all night researching!" after attending a day-long seminar on the Internet and genealogy. Following a short refreshment period, at approximately 3:30 p.m., the Computer Interest Group of the East Texas Genealogical Society will meet. Bill Dow will present a program on "GenSmarts". Recently, I learned that my biological father (who was a college student in the summer of 1951 when I was conceived in Longview, Texas) was the son of a prominent attorney in Longview, Texas in 1951. The man I grew up believing was my father (and so did he) has been deceased for 12 years. My mother is living and resides with my husband and me, but she insist that she does not remember my biological father's name. I only recently confronted her about my biological father, so I am just beginning to look for him. I have no idea where to begin, as I have never tried to find this type of information, via the internet. Will someone please offer some helpful direction? Sincerely, Kay Ashbrook

Otherwise, "Miss Gladyce" and her ladies are to be congratulated for running a topnotch operation. A research visit is well worth the effort.
