    1. Joseph "Joe" Davis born 01 May 1882
    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Surnames: Davis, Reese Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/IiB.2ACE/746 Message Board Post: I am looking for a Joseph "Joe" DAVIS born 01 May 1882 in Longview, Gregg Co., TX to William Henry DAVIS and Amanda Elizabeth REESE. Joseph was last seen circa 1918 in Longview, TX visiting in the home of his brother Thomas Davis. Many attempts by Thomas trying to locate the whereabouts of his brother Joe proved unsuccessfull. I did find in SSDI a Joseph Davis born 01 May 1882 and died Oct 1962, last benefit paid in Oregon. State issued was Washington. I have since found that this Joseph Davis died in Polk Co., Oregon. I have no idea if this Joseph Davis is the same Joseph Davis that has been missing in our Davis family for so many years.. Any information on the Joseph Davis that died in 1962 Polk Co., Oregon would be appreciated. If you know what happened to our Joseph Davis I would be grateful. Renee Smelley IRSmelley2@aol.com

Pine Tree Church still is active and sits in the middle of Pine Tree ISD in Longview, TX. That church was established around 1842 and is the oldest established surviving church in Gregg County. There are few records left because I asked. A minister there about 10 years ago felt the need to toss all old things in this church. My great-grandfather's sisters married Castleberry brothers who were members of this church and were very active. The Castleberrys were founding families of this church and Elmira's Chapel. Contact this church and Elmira's Chapel Cumberland Presbyterian Church (established by James. R. Castleberry) in Longview. The Elmira's Chapel has better records. Good luck!! Betsy

Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/IiB.2ACE/663.2.1.1 Message Board Post: Thanks so much for the Birdsong information, Linda! I visited the Danville Cemetery twice last year trying to make the Horton / Birdsong connection. Would you happen to have any additional information on Opal Horton's parents and family? In the 1930 Gregg Co., TX she's with father, Lewis whose 1st name is Bear, mother Bell, whose 1st name is Lillie, and younger siblings Ruth May and Sallie. I'm trying to make a connection between Opal's father, Bear Lewis Horton b. 1891 AL, and a John Horton b. abt. 1861 GA. I believe they are father and son, but I have nothing to prove it. Do you know of the connection? Also, one of Opal's siblings, Ruth May Horton b. 17 Feb 1923 married on 17 July 1946 to Sherman R. "Shank" Spivey b. 06 Jul 1917 and d. 19 Feb 1997. There isn't a death date for Ruth, so I'm assuming she's still living in Gregg Co., TX. If you can help by providing more information about Opal's parents I would greatly appreciate it. I'm looking forward to your response. And, again, thank you for the Birdsong information. Sincerely, Amanda Horton

Surnames: Horton and Birdsong Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/IiB.2ACE/663.2 Message Board Post: I don't have dates for James H. Birdsong, but I can tell you how the Birdsongs are related to the Hortons. Background: In Stewart Co., GA there were the Horton, Birdsong and Meadows families. Some of each came to Gregg Co., TX. Of the Hortons, Sampson L. Horton (GA) married in Stewart Co., GA to Jane Meadows (GA) and had 3 sons - Jesse W.(b. abt. 1856 GA), James M. (b. abt. 1858 GA) and John (b. abt. 1861). Jesse and James Horton came to TX after the 1880 census in Stewart Co., GA. Sarah, the person who posted a response a few months ago to this query, descends of Jesse's line. I descend of James's line. For the 3rd brother John, I haven't been able to find him yet. However, he had a son named Bear Lewis Horton born 07 Feb 1891 in AL and died 20 Nov 1938 who is buried in the Danville Cemetery in Gregg Co., TX. (John must have stopped in AL, rather than going on to TX.) I'm assuming that his son Bear moved from AL to be near his uncles in TX as an adult, because his wife, Lillie B. UNKNOWN was born in Alabama, as well, on 08 Sep 1899 and died in TX on 17 Nov 1964 and is buried next to Bear in Danville. Here's the relation - Bear & Lillie Horton had at least 4 children by the 1930 Gregg Co., TX census: Opal (b. 16 Apr 1920), Ruby May (b. 17 Feb 1923), Sallie and Infant Son (born & died 27 June 1929). Opal Horton married Phillip Birdsong (b. 26 Aug 1911). Opal died 13 Aug 1988 and Phillip died 02 Nov 1995. They are both buried next to Bear & Lillie in Danville. I'm not quite sure how your James H. & Eunice P. Birdsong are related to Phillip, yet, but I'm sure they are closely related. Let me know of the connection. Sincere thanks, Amanda Horton
