    3. Regular Meeting of East Texas Genealogical Society, Tyler, TX Saturday, April 9, 2005 Tyler Public Library - Taylor Auditorium 2:00 p.m. Speaker: Don Raney Program: "Identify the Ancestors of Anna Miller From Claiborne Parish, LA" The quantity of good genealogical information on the Internet continues to grow. It is now possible to solve many of your "brick wall" genealogical research problems with information available at several key genealogical sites on the Internet. This lecture is a step by step "how to" example of the research techniques that can be used to solve many difficult genealogical problems using sources that are available on the Internet. Miller is the seventh most common surname which results in the typical research problems in identifying ancestors with a common surname. This lecture demonstrates the Internet research techniques used to identify and document three generations of the Miller family using only Internet resources. Mr. Raney was able to identify the parents of his great great grandmother, Anna Miller, among the 22 Miller families in Claiborne Parish, LA in the 1850 Census. Clues found on Internet sites using land records, census records, USGenWeb County Sites, and Advanced Google searches led me from Claiborne Parish, LA to Warren (now Allen) County KY, to Pendleton District (now Pickens County), SC where the Miller family settled about 1780. Mr. Raney is a sixth generation Texan who has been an active genealogist for twenty-five years. He teaches beginning, intermediate, and advanced TMG genealogy courses at Richmond College. He is a past director of the Dallas Genealogy Society and GENTECH and a life member of the San Jacinto Descendants. He is the author of Martin Varner, Texas Pioneer: 1785-1844. He has been a speaker at numerous conferences and society meetings throughout the state. Following a short refreshment period, at approximately 3:30 p.m., the Computer Interest Group of the East Texas Genealogical Society will meet. Beverly Odom will present a program on "The Many Uses of the Computer". Information on upcoming programs can be found at: http://www.rootsweb.com/~txetgs/meetings.html East Texas Genealogical Society represent six counties which are Anderson, Gregg, Henderson, Panola, Rusk and Smith counties. 3. -------- Original Message -------- Subject: {not a subscriber} Surname- Sweet ? Date: Tue, 5 Apr 2005 17:04:40 -0600 From: LOUWELOUWE@aol.com To: TXGREGG-L@rootsweb.com Hi Listers, I'm wondering if someone can help me. I'm trying to locate a Wilson Sweet (African American) around the 1880 time frame. I know he, his wife and family were living in Longview in 1880 (census). His wife left him sometime after that and moved to San Augustine. I find her later on and remarried so I'm assuming they must have divorced. I have been unable to find anything on Wilson Sweet after the 1880 census. I don't know if he remarried or died early. There are family stories that say he worked for the railroad and died in a railroad accident. I've been unable to find anything on that. If anyone has any suggestions or can help me, please email me at _Louwelouwe@aol.com_ (mailto:Louwelouwe@aol.com) This is for a friend that I've been helping. Wilson and his wife are the grandparents to her aunt. The aunt never knew Wilson and so they've asked me to find them. I only just found when and where his wife died this past weekend so it's my goal to find Wilson for them. The only thing we really know on Wilson is that he was born between 1856-1859. He was born either in Texas, Louisiana or Georgia. Thank you very much in advance for any help. Rhonda

    1. RE: Where is this church?
    2. I am absolutely sure............Gregg was never a part of Smith. It was formed from Upshur, Harrison and RUSK counties. In 1873, State Representative B. W. Brown (of Summerfield Community north of Longview) introduced a bill to create a new county from parts of Upshur, Rusk and Harrison counties. However, Harrison County successfully resisted fragmentation, and the Rusk County portion turned out smaller than desired. Sharon Pierce Co-CC Gregg, Upshur & Harrison Cos TXGenWeb

    2. I'm not absolutely sure, but I believe Gregg County was carved out of Smith, Upshur, and Harrison counties. I expect "Saline" is a misprint and should be "Sabine". Would this be the old Christian Union church? I'm not that familiar with the layout of that area circa 1858, but it seems that the Christian Union church would probably fit location-wise. Was it six miles west of Camden? What was there in Rusk County in 1858 would probably be in Gregg County now.
