Regular Meeting of East Texas Genealogical Society, Tyler, TX Saturday, February 11, 2006 Tyler Public Library - Taylor Auditorium 2:00 p.m. Speaker: Sylvia Barbee Program: "Underground Railroad Quilt" Our program this month is dedicated to African-American History Month with a presentation from Sylvia Barbee. Mrs. Barbee will discuss the history of Underground Railroad and the belief that patterns of the blocks used in quilts were designed to communicate a code about the route that escaped slaves could use. Mrs. Barbee has used the book "Hidden in Plain View: A Secret Story of Quilts and the Underground Railroad" by Jacqueline L. Tobin and Raymond G. Dobard as a reference. Mrs. Barbee will have a "Underground Railroad Sampler" quilt to display that was made by Mary Waddill. The quilt will be used to help tell the story of the link between the Underground Railroad efforts and the American Patchwork Quilt. Mrs. Waddill used the pattern book "The Underground Railroad Sampler " by Eleanor Burns to make her quilt. Mrs. Barbee has been quilting for over 20 years. She is a member of Van Zandt County Genealogical Society in Canton for seven years where she first presented this program last November. Mrs. Waddill is the wife of Joe Waddill, past president of the Van Zandt County Genealogical Society. She has been quilting for several years now. Regular Meeting of East Texas Genealogical Society, Tyler, TX Saturday, January 14, 2006 Tyler Public Library - Taylor Auditorium 2:00 p.m. Speaker: Judy Knight Program: "Interlibrary Loans for Genealogists" Everyone has found a book about an elusive ancestor in a library 500 miles away, but they will only copy a couple of pages. Find out how you can have this book at your home or local library to peruse at your leisure through Interlibrary Loan Programs. Our speaker, Judy Knight, will give us the best places to request interlibrary loans and tell of her experiences with each place. Judy is a graduate of East Texas State University in Commerce and a retired elementary school teacher. Judy is married to Willis Knight, a photographer for the Fort Worth Star-Telegram. They have two grown sons and one grandson. Her love of genealogy began as a child and she started activity researching about 35 years ago. She has a certificate for the First Families of Tennessee for my ancestor who was a resident of Tennessee before 1796, an Oregon Pioneer Certificate for my ancestor who traveled the Oregon Train in 1853, three certificates for Civil War Families of Tennessee and a Gone to Texas certificate. She has also received a Texas First Families certificate for her husband. She has traveled extensively doing family history research. She is Past President of the Mid-Cities Genealogical Society and currently District 11 Representative and President Elect for Texas State Genealogical Society. The second book received a first place award in the Dallas Genealogical Society Writing Awards Division 4 in 2004. She was involved in the process of having her family cemetery named as a Historic Texas Cemetery at 2001 and received a certificate for her work from the Texas Historical Commission. This cemetery is just south of Haslet in Tarrant County. As chairman of the cemetery's 125th Anniversary Celebration she organized a special celebration and reunion that was held in October 2005. We will strive to publish a variety of material on each of the six counties represented by ETGS. Although exceptions may be made, material relating to our six counties prior to 1900 are of the most interest. Articles concerning other areas will be used occasionally if of sufficient interest to many people. Material from old and/or rare unindexed books will also be considered. Priority will be given to courthouse, Bible and cemetery records, but we are very interested in publishing the following types of source material: Biographical Family Sketches, Lodge Records, Old Diary Accounts, Census Records, Marriage Records, Old Letters, Commissioners Court Minutes, Military Muster Rolls, Post Offices, Confederate Records, Mortality Schedules, Probate Abstracts, Deed and Land Records, Newspaper Clippings, School Lists, Jury Lists, Obituaries of East Texas Citizens, Tax Lists, Library Microfilm Holdings, and Voter Lists. When submitting Bible records, please give name of person possessing Bible, give date of publication, if known, make sure all information is legible and accurate if copied by hand. When submitting cemetery records, please give exact location of cemetery, date copied and name of copier. PUBLICATION: To be considered for publication, an item or article should have a reliable reference and should not be based entirely on "tradition." We do not wish to publish items from books now in print, however, such references may be used as footnotes to clarify sources. Please be certain all material is legible. Xerox copies can be used, but typewritten articles are preferred to avoid errors in transcribing handwritten material. Please include your name, address, e-mail address and day-time telephone number with all material submitted. The editor must retain the right to accept or reject materials and to edit those chosen for publications. Credit will be given to each contributor. If requested, material may be returned, otherwise it will become property of the Society. QUERIES: Queries submitted by members will be published as space is available. Please type or print each query on a separate sheet of paper. Capitalize all surnames and include at lease one date and place. ETGS does not assume responsibility for errors of fact or opinions expressed by contributors. However, we strive to publish reliable source material, and errors will be corrected when submitted in writing. ETGS POLICY ON THE REPLACEMENT OF PERIODICALS The East Texas Genealogical Society strives to publish a maximum of genealogical information at minimum costs, in order that the Society's publications may be widely available to all who are interested. Consistent with this objective, certain restraints are necessary in regard to replacement of periodicals, which were not received by the intended recipients. Hence, if a member, institution or other organization fails to receive a copy of THE EAST TEXAS FAMILY RECORDS, the quarterly, ETGS must be notified within six months of the publication date of that issue. Otherwise, the intended recipient will be supplied a replacement copy only if copies are still available and only at the published price. The ETGS Newsletter, "The Bulletin," primarily carries news of short-term interest and back issues will not normally be supplied. If there is a special need for back issues, the recipient will be quoted a price for which they may be ordered. PUBLICATION DATES ARE: MARCH 31, JUNE 30, SEPTEMBER 30, and DECEMBER 31 of each year.
