    1. ETGS Meeting, June 10th, Tyler, TX
    2. Scott Fitzgerald
    3. Regular Meeting of East Texas Genealogical Society, Tyler, TX Saturday, June 10, 2006 Tyler Public Library - Taylor Auditorium 2:00 p.m. Speaker: Don Raney Program: "Wills and the Probate Process" East Texas Genealogical Society will hold it regular monthly meeting on Saturday, June 10th at 2:00 p.m. at the Tyler Public Library in the Taylor Auditorium featuring Don Raney. Mr. Raney will present a program called "Wills and the Probate Process." If your ancestor was testate - died with a will, his heirs presented his will to the probate court and requested appointment of an executor. If your ancestor was intestate - died without a will, the principal heir usually petitions the court to appoint an administrator. The probate court assigns an identifying number to the estate and a probate packet is created for the court. The probate packet will contain the will, letters testamentary, inventory of the estate, list of beneficiaries, records of public sale, deeds, invoices, receipts and a final accounting of the disposition of the estate. You should begin your search for probate records in the county where your ancestor died and usually owned property. In most jurisdictions, all of the probate records will be in one series of court books and the probate records may be intermingled with other court records. The older probate records in some counties have been abstracted and published. The best sources for published probate records are county libraries, the home pages for individual counties on US GenWeb, the LDS Library online card catalog, PERSI, and the online card catalogs for the appropriate state libraries. Mr. Raney is a sixth generation Texan who has been an active genealogist for twenty-five years. He teaches beginning, intermediate, and advanced genealogy courses at Richmond College He is a past director of the Dallas Genealogy Society and GENTECH and a life member of the San Jacinto Descendants. He is the author of Martin Varner, Texas Pioneer: 1785-1844. He has been a speaker at numerous conferences and society meetings throughout the state. The Computer Interest Group of the East Texas Genealogical Society will not meet this month. Information on upcoming programs can be found at: http://www.rootsweb.com/~txetgs/meetings.html East Texas Genealogical Society represent six counties which are Anderson, Gregg, Henderson, Panola, Rusk and Smith counties. Regular Meeting of East Texas Genealogical Society, Tyler, TX Saturday, May 13, 2006 Tyler Public Library - Taylor Auditorium 2:00 p.m. Speaker: Carol Taylor Program: "Funeral Practices in the 18th and 19th Century" Our speaker for May, Carol Taylor, will present a program on "Funeral Practices in the 18th and 19th Centuries." Our ancestors did not have the funeral home as we do today, so they had other ways to deal with the death of a loved one. Carol will explain the common practices our ancestors used in dealing with death and burials. She will include a power point presentation of tombstone styles and explanation of some symbols on older headstones. Carol Taylor is the director of the Northeast Texas Genealogy Center located in Greenville, Texas. Her work there includes archival preservation, oral histories, writing a weekly local and family history newspaper column, and spearheading a film project related to local historical sights. She develops programs for a local summer symposium called "Texana: Texas Legends and Lore" for local population. She was the 2003 Winner of the Ottis Locke Award from the East Texas Historical Association. Carol is chairman of the Hunt County Historical Commission. She has researched and written numerous historical marker applications for Hunt County. She has a special interest in preservation of historic cemeteries, especially those that have been abandoned. She is the historian of Kavanaugh Methodist Church. Carol Taylor holds Bachelors and Masters Degrees from Midwestern State University in Education. Currently, she is a graduate student at Texas A & M University-Commerce seeking a Masters in History. Following a short refreshment period, at approximately 3:30 p.m., the Computer Interest Group of the East Texas Genealogical Society will meet. Xerox copies can be used, but typewritten articles are preferred to avoid errors in transcribing handwritten material. Please include your name, address, e-mail address and day-time telephone number with all material submitted. The editor must retain the right to accept or reject materials and to edit those chosen for publications. Credit will be given to each contributor. If requested, material may be returned, otherwise it will become property of the Society. QUERIES: Queries submitted will be published as space is available. However, we strive to publish reliable source material, and errors will be corrected when submitted in writing. ETGS POLICY ON THE REPLACEMENT OF PERIODICALS The East Texas Genealogical Society strives to publish a maximum of genealogical information at minimum costs, in order that the Society's publications may be widely available to all who are interested. Consistent with this objective, certain restraints are necessary in regard to replacement of periodicals, which were not received by the intended recipients. Hence, if a member, institution or other organization fails to receive a copy of THE EAST TEXAS FAMILY RECORDS, the quarterly, ETGS must be notified within six months of the publication date of that issue. Otherwise, the intended recipient will be supplied a replacement copy only if copies are still available and only at the published price. The ETGS Newsletter, "The Bulletin," primarily carries news of short-term interest and back issues will not normally be supplied. If there is a special need for back issues, the recipient will be quoted a price for which they may be ordered. PUBLICATION DATES ARE: MARCH 31, JUNE 30, SEPTEMBER 30, and DECEMBER 31 of each year.
