    3. Thank-you for writing. Would the newspaper index indicate if TOWNSEND's were in any articles at the time? I was thinking about obit's, etc. Thanks, Kathy ----- Original Message ----- From: "Hawkins" <hawkins@texoma.net> To: <TXGRAYSO-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Saturday, July 12, 2003 7:27 PM Subject: Re: [GRAYSON] 1882 Earthquake & TOWNSEND family > I haven't read of any deaths in the earthquake there is another I have > papers on somewhere that covered the Savoy area in Fannin and over to > the Bell's area, but it occurred at an earlier time and the only > injuries were from falling mud chimneys. > I don't believe anything but minor injuries happened. 3. http://www.rootsweb.com/~txgrayso/cwanewspaper.html Right now it only goes to P, I have more to add on that one then there are two more of the old ones , all indexed by the CWA in the depression about 1935. There are about 400 or so pages if I recall in the set and I will get them all. It takes time. There were two main papers before the Sherman Democrat, the last of the three indexes covers mostly that thru 1935, because of their timing it is very important. Not all the newpapers are on microfilm though at the Sherman library , since 1935 their were various editions that are gone. Sometimes you can find them at the library in Austin. Right now they do not have enough volunteers to answer very much in the way of genealogical questions but perhaps I can find a volunteer or set up a lookup day every 3 months or something. As soon as I finish city directories I will have more time. They are like wading through molassas. I don't know of a more miserable piece of webwork than a city directory. Sometimes when I go to work on them I wished I cut my toe or bang my head just so I'd have a good excuse to go do something else ! :) I figure though that if you find a listing and have the column, page and edition, you can go to the online card catalog and see if that paper is there or email the reference desk and perhaps they can manage to copy it since it is a direct date/placement etc. But if they can't the state library in Austin can. Cross you fingers that more volunteers can be found. The one that was so good died a couple of years ago. She was a library volunteer. The regular librarians try to do it all but there just isnt' time with the jobs that need doing. The Grayson County Genealogical Society doesnt' have a work group or volunteers to boost the genealogy work in the area. Also they do not have a quarterly, which is ashamed. It would be wonderful if they could do that. I write the articles that are put in the Fannin County Flashback so I'm up to my eyeballs in that when I'm not loading to Fannin and Grayson TXGenWeb's. There is a need for volunteers. Write me tomorrow about your Townsendns and let me know if you have already checked the three main biographical books of the county. I've got permisson to put an index online for two of the three books so far and will try to get too it. If I seem so slow I work on a lot of volunteer projects and also teach sometimes. I do a lot of lookups so most days I spend all the spare time I have handling those, but I do type on something everyday for the genweb or the quarterly. And I try to sneak in time on my own genealogy once in a while. If everyone would volunteer to do something where they are living, for the records there, everything we desire would be online at our finger tips.
