Looking for help maybe finding an obituary or death information leading to his ancestry and that of his wife Nancy FORRESTER (1814 - 1848) James' daughter, Margaret Corley SHANNON (1847 - 1928) was born in Texas (Grayson??) married Gideon Lyman FRIEND and moved with him to Chickasha, OK The mystery is with James. Had information that he was shot on April 25, 1849. Supposedly buried in Shannon Cemetery in Sherman. Is there such a cemetery? Sounds suspiciously like a family plot. Does anyone have access to newspapers (probably Sherman) for that date. It would be a wonderful help. Thanks, Marty ( in Maryland )
Listings for Shannon Cemetery can be found at http://ftp.rootsweb.com/pub/usgenweb/tx/grayson/cemetery/shannon.txt However, oddly, there is no Shannon's listed there. The person that has done this canvas though, on other cemeteries he has done, has missed quite a few graves and some times has messed up vitals, so.................... Thanks for the post. Maybe some day I can get to the cemetery myself and take a look. I was hoping to find what the newspapers said about his death. Do you know what newspapers were in operation in those days? Maybe I can find someone at the local library to look up the obituary. The most up to date lists though are in the Grayson County TXGenWeb site, we are correcting these and I won't be correcting the lists that are in the Archives (those ftp addresses) for a couple of years or more. Those are already almost all out of date as are lists that were sent to other cemetery websites, it is much easier to work on the one set and then when we have done all we can replace the other lists. We are doing corrections almost daily, he is also going to all obits and adding notes to many of them, of course this catches unmarked graves. I add things I have that pop up in my research , such as interviews with people who served as pallbearers at various funerals, and now he is photographing all the tombstones, I have over 6000 of them on my desk and start today. I dread the work but love it too! He already has hundreds up. Eventually I would say he would have done the top job of anyone when he is finished. I am amazed to Mike's dedication Just the obituaries alone would be too much if you ever viewed that huge and growing collection. Everyone keep sending in corrections. I make them and then send a copy to mike. We also are wanting all additional info , I take photographs sent to me of their homes, portraits, photos of themselves, biographical info and then link it to the names in the cemeteries also. Together we will sweep the county and draw out all the biographical and historical data possible. I can also link to anyones websites so let me know. Marty, I have a couple of documents with James B. Shannon's signature on them. My gg grandfather was John Jennings and he came to the Grayson/Fannin county area in the mid 1840's. On February 17, 1846, John Jennings bought two parcels of land from James B. Shannon. Those parcels of land were a total of 1050 acres. In both of those documents, James B. Shannon was listed as being "of Fannin Co." Both of these documents are recorded in the records of Grayson Co. Like others, I would strongly suspect that James B. Shannon lived in Fannin Co. very near the Grayson Co. line. On both of those sales documents, one of the witnesses was Daniel Montague. John Jennings also bought a parcel of land from Daniel Montague at the sime time and James B. Shannon was one of the witnesses for that sale. Also, Daniel Montague was married several times. I believe that he last married a lady named ? Shannon who was about 20 or so years younger than he was, and she could have been related to James B. Shannon. Just a thought. You might want to research the Montague line for some additional information. Keith Reed Arlington, Tx.
