The most up to date lists though are in the Grayson County TXGenWeb site, we are correcting these and I won't be correcting the lists that are in the Archives (those ftp addresses) for a couple of years or more. Those are already almost all out of date as are lists that were sent to other cemetery websites, it is much easier to work on the one set and then when we have done all we can replace the other lists. We are doing corrections almost daily, he is also going to all obits and adding notes to many of them, of course this catches unmarked graves. I add things I have that pop up in my research , such as interviews with people who served as pallbearers at various funerals, and now he is photographing all the tombstones, I have over 6000 of them on my desk and start today. I dread the work but love it too! He already has hundreds up. Eventually I would say he would have done the top job of anyone when he is finished. I am amazed to Mike's dedication Just the obituaries alone would be too much if you ever viewed that huge and growing collection. Everyone keep sending in corrections. I make them and then send a copy to mike. We also are wanting all additional info , I take photographs sent to me of their homes, portraits, photos of themselves, biographical info and then link it to the names in the cemeteries also. Together we will sweep the county and draw out all the biographical and historical data possible. I can also link to anyones websites so let me know. Shannon Cemetery is online with no Shannons in it that are marked but that period is the most likely period to have wooden markers that are now gone. Lots of other Shannons in the website though, when I put it in the search engine I find 52 entrys. http://www.rootsweb.com/~txgrayso/ In my Grayson Co. Pioneer index are several James Shannons, none with a wife Nancy, Quite a few Shannon Families in Grayson in those early days. No Forrester families in that , just checked to see if she showed up as a daughter early on. Obituaries are available from that time period, BUT they are found in the Clarksville News and in the Dallas newspapers (I'm not positive of its starting time) The Clarksvill paper is available back into the early 1840s and on microfilm. Most of the microfilms are available through the state library. I have a link to their collections on the newspaper page of the Fannin and Grayson Websites. The Sherman papers don't start on microfilm until much later. I have the earliest index for it online. Clarksvilles newspaper carried news from all over, a shooting is of extra interest and it should be there. Go into the state library website and use the index there, even if he doesn't show up go to the parts that tell you how to send for a copy, since you have the exact date. January 24 To Marty in Maryland Excuse me for butting in here but I couldn't resist :) I have this terrible 'affliction' where unconnected data goes into the 'grey cells' and is brought forth by some unconnected reason. I don't wish to presume you haven't already discovered and maybe you already know that the Shannon's gave land for the site of Sherman (see below for references) and that in February 1850 it was specified as the County Seat.(a) Fannin County came from Red River County and included portion that was to become Grayson County. Moving into this area were several distinguished individuals, distinguished in that they played a role in later development. it was written that in 1837 James Shannon was one of twelve such persons to arrive. "...They settled mainly on the waters of Choctaw Creek and its tributaires, Iron Ore and Post Oak Creeks. The settlements, therefore, involved almost exclusively the northeastern one half of the county..."(b) (a)pg. 13; (b)pg. 12 -Ancestors and Descendants Grayson County, Texas, copyright by Grayson County, Texas, Genealogical Society, 1980. Grayson County Before the Civil War by Morris L. Britton Another reference - Grayson County An Illustrated History of Grayson County, Texas by Graham Landrum, a publication sponsored by The Grayson County Federated Women's Clubs, there is a map which shows Shannon on the Preston Road north of Sherman, (Old Sherman is shown to the West) in the 3rd Peters Colony Contract. There is quite a bit of interesting data but I was only looking for my ancestors at the time. My research has already shown me that the 'compiler' and his assistants were not careful when they prepared his 'work' on County Cemeteries. In fact it was in October 1997 that I visited a cemetery connected to my ancestors and located and photographed two grave sites not mentioned in the 1997 'work'. Hope you find what you are looking for. From Oregon
OK - thanks for the help. Maybe I can try to contact Mike Cross. He may be willing to take another look. Is there anyone on the list that frequents the VanAlstyne Cemetery in Grayson Co., TX, that would consider taking some photos of my ancestors monuments, for me? I would like to have photos of the monuments of: ENLOE JAMES M -16 FEB 1810 02 MAY 1877 MASON EMBLEM ENLOE JOEL S -14 JUN 1845 15 MAY 1855 BROKEN STONE ENLOE JOHN H -12 JUL 1859 19 OCT 1859 BROKEN STONE ENLOE MARY- 26 SEP 1820 17 JUN 1877 Mary & James Enloe were husband & wife, and others were their children. Thanks, Sallie Cannon
Sally, I wrote to you a long time ago about I would take the pictures you need. Are maybe there was someone else that ask that, I don't remember who it was but it was the Enloe family there in Van Alstyne. Another thing, didn't they come from Mo? They knew my Jackson family who was in the same area in Mo and some came to same place in the Grayson and Collin Counties line. But anyway I will take the pictures you need. Is anyone on the Grayson Co. list researching the family of John Jennings. John, his wife and some of his sons were on the 1850 census of Grayson Co. (John was married to Sarah "Sally" Harris in Missouri). They had arrived in the area of Grayson Co. about 1845-46 and lived there until about 1851 when they moved to Williamson Co. When Burnet Co. was created from Williamson Co. in 1852, John was elected as one of the County Commissioners and served in the 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 5th term of the County Government. ( I have a copy of John's Oath of Office). I believe that John's son Hillard and possibly another son remained in Grayson Co. when John and the remainder of his family moved to Williamson Co. I also believe that a relative by marriage also accompanied the Jennings family to Grayson Co. That relative was Ashford Grubbs. Ashford was the son of Enoch Grubbs from S. Carolina. I also have a bit of information about him. I would be happy to share what information I have with anyone researching this family. Keith Reed Arlington, Tx.
On TXGRAYSO-L@rootsweb.com Jan 1, 2004, you were seeking information on a Sidney Hartzog who married June 22, 1865 according to your date in Grayson Co. Sidney was a McGehee ..her Richard Marion Hartzog husband had died in 1863 in Grayson Co. (They had m. Jan. 13, 1859) and they had one son James Elijah Hartzog. I cannot confirm your marriage date or John Crenshaw's first marriage. If you have information I would like to receive it. However, Sidney and John Bates are listed in Dallas Co., Texas in the 1870 census: Dwelling #681 with Bates, John 58, SC; Bates, Sidney 40 MO; Bates, Lavenis 17 GA; Bates, Napolean 13,GA; Martha 12 MO; Hartzog James 10, Texas. .
