OK, I'm really geographically challenged. I *think* my Morris family lived near Howe, maybe Van Alstyne, but as only the 1880 census has them on it and I do not understand the E. D. designations, I'm really suffering with 25 years of frustration in Grayson County. Years ago, I searched the indices of the land records and evidently the Morris' did not own or hold a mortgage on any land -- at least none that I found. And, maybe, when William M. Morris died c. 1891 they did not put up a marker, or maybe it is lost. But, if I had some idea of the cemeteries around Howe and Van Alstyne it would help. I ever hope that the Van Alstyne Cemetery will be posted, but understand William is not listed in it -- I just hope I might find some other possible connections. So, what would I really like to see on the Grayson County website? Info about the records available -- why was the courthouse burned by a mob? Info on how to understand the meets and bounds and find property locations in Grayson county. Info on the churches that might still have records -- I think I need Baptist records but am not sure. Some information on the migrations [and why] into Grayson county. When was the first newspaper published -- who has early newspapers on microfilm? Some information on how people actually got there [rafts/ferries -- trails into Grayson]. Information on the cattle trails -- the railroads. And, I would love to see more records available. Cheryl
With the location of Grayson and size of population, it would be nice if more "information guide lines were posted" I say, Amen.................Leroy Gailey
Cheryl, I second everything you said about what you'd like to see on the Grayson County list. And the more data that can be online, the better. Rae Ann Hopkins Berry (still searching for Dabney Caldwell Hopkins)
Newcomb is very very much a Kentuckytown name. His house is even still there . George Washingtom Newcomb also formed Pilot Point and his painting hangs in the Lodge over there. I have more on his family tree if anyone is working on it. He is kin to the Hardin(g) s there and the Penn's susan Beth J wrote: > Hi, am looking for any info on the following: > > John Madison Abell b. 1839 Marion Co KY m. BTW Jerry--I (and probably the whole list) would love for you to send us the wagon train stories that you have heard--whether any of your kin are ours, or not. It is such stories that make our ancestors come alive and help us to appreciate these pioneers even moreso...! Jerry and Beth (and anyone else) -- wonder if my PIERCE and REEVES kin were on that same wagon train? They were from Clinton Co., KY, but I don't know when they left. (Clinton Co. is in middle KY on the TN line) Others that I believe came on one or more wagon trains were NEATHERY and GRIDER, and probably many more. My great-grandfather, Dabney Caldwell HOPKINS, was born on Dec. 1, 1849 in Clinton County KY. In August 1874 he m. Mary Catherine (Kate) DAVIS and in October 1874 they moved to Lamar County, TX. Their first child, Orion HOPKINS, was born in Lamar County in 1875. There are deeds which indicate that D.C. and Mary C. HOPKINS may have still been in Lamar County in 1877. In 1880, if not before, Dr. D.C. HOPKINS was practicing medicine in Strawn, Palo Pinto County, TX and his second and third children, daughters Ethel and Lucy, were born there. His fourth child was born in February 1885 in Whitewright, Grayson County, TX, and, one month later, D.C. HOPKINS died in Gordon, Palo Pinto County, TX. Kate and the four children lived for many years afterward in Whitewright. There are many unanswered questions regarding D.C. HOPKINS. If you know ANYTHING about these ancestors of mine, please let me know. Rae Ann

I find the Van Alstne cemetery listed, although not transcribed at http://www.rootsweb.com/~cemetery/Texas/indexd.html#g and then under "G", for Grayson. This will also show all transcribed Texas cemeteries. They have a link there, back to to the Grayson County GenWeb, but the Grayson County GenWeb site does not have have a link to this site on their page for some reason, as their "cemetery listings" only show which cemeteries are there. Julie, The Van Alstyne cemetery in on the border of the town of Van Alstyne. The county line runs right in that area so I have found a cemetery listing in the past, listing the cemetery as being in Collin Co although Van Alstyne is in Grayson Co. The library in town has a very helpful staff, who willingly help you with family histories but they are unable to make copies of their newspaper articles on microfilm at this time. Have fun and let me know how it turns out. As you know Martha Vaughn and Thomas Newton Wall were cousins as they were both grandchildren of Joshua Wall.
