Recently I visited the Grayson County cemetery site and was pleased to find West Hill Cemetery, Sherman, listed. However, none of my husband's ancestors (mainly Nelson and Harris) were listed on the site. I know they are buried there, because the cemetery was very kind in corresponding with me a few years back. Can anyone tell me why the discrepancy? Thanks, Pat Nelson
I believe my gg grandfather's second wife, Una/Eunice Stuckey ABEL is buried at Van Alstyne. She died 7 May 1882, McKinney, Collin Co, but they lived very near Grayson Co and she is said to be buried at Van Alstyne. How do I go about determining if she is indeed buried there? She is not listed in the Collin Co cemetery book that includes Van Alstyne, but that doesn't necessarily mean she isn't there. Also, does anyone have a listing of churches in the area of Van Alstyne/Anna/McKinney? I know Una and husband were active in the Baptist church, trying to find which church they attended. I have been making inquiries re the 1852 Wagon Train on my KY lists, will let you know if I find any info! Beth Abel Jones
I just spent 2 hrs working on a list for you all when my computer locked up and I had not backed up my draft of the list. I have the answers to many of these questions. Many of them are already online and just not visible to the public. Others are up under the wrong name. I am working on a Grayson cemetery map. I guess I will load it on the Fannin Website as Grayson's is not active. I have a genealogy workshop to teach tomorrow morning or I would be glad to stay up and rework it. I will be back on it tomorrow evening . I have visited with mike and making a list of undone ones. Some I have that he doesn't yet. and two or three are lost still. But most are actually done and up. just known by other names. or not linked by the volunteers yet. The Millenium list is very inaccurate in some cases and is a committee list. Some of the cemeteries they list are not in Grayson County. back tomorrow. susan in texas Fannin County CC
Maybe someone can group all of Grayson County cemeteries by areas of the county -- it might help other researchers. Listed on the Millenium list, NOT listed in the Archives of Grayson County *Mulberry *Myrant Newton Oakwood -- I have a question about this *Offutt Outhouse [an awful name but it is listed as near Ambrose] Patton *Pecan Grove *Pool *Pope *Porter *Post Oak Potts [2 small cemeteries listed] *Price-Burton-Hite *Princeton [and a question as to whether it is in Grayson County] Providence [same as Burleson] Ragsdale *Rector Rich, North and South Rockport *Sand Pitt Sandy Springs [Sandusky] Scott Family *Shannon [Ray Yard] *Shaw *Shelton *Shiloh [Methodist Church?] *Shiloh Shires *Sikes Simon *Smith Oaks Starks Chaple Taylor Thomas Thompson Throckmorton *Tuck *Turley-Gain *Union Van Alstyne *Walker Grave Walthall WAre *Warnell Warden Washburn Welch West Hill *West Shady Grove White Rock Whitesboro (Oakwood) Whitewright City Whitewright Oak Hill *Wilson Wiley Woodman Circle And on the archive page but NOT on the Millenium list: Oakwood - Denison Plainview Roberts Vaden Worden Wrenn Now, can anyone help with those marked with a * on the Millenium list [where is the cemetery}
Someone on the list directed me to http://www.co.grayson.tx.us/Cemetery.htm and there I found a huge listing by the Millennium Committee. A comparison with what is posted on the Grayson County Archives shows the following: Listed on Millenium and NOT on the Archives: Alcarr Allred Aston Antioch [Pink Hill?] Atchison Austin St. Barron Barry [Berry?] Beasley North Rosehill Ben Dye Bethel Berry Bigbee Blanton Bledsoe Blassingame Boston Boyd Brawl Brogdon Brooks Brown Family Bush Campbell Canaan [Everhart] Cannon [Cannon Community] Cannon Canyon Carson Cedarlawm Chambers Clement Cole Collinsville Colored Cottonwood County Farm Damron Deumas Diamond [Red] Dickie Family Dixie -- there are two listings??? their is no list I know of . One of the company's was the Kentucky Immigration (Emigration??)Company. I know somewhere someone sent me copies of books in Kentucky about the Heiston family there and they tell about the members of the community leaving. I would imagine the newspapers in Ky. will tell the whole story. susan Ken Hestand wrote: > Does anyone have a list of those who were on the wagon train from > Kentucky to Grayson County? I noticed that there are a lot of Copelands buried at Hall Cemetery near Howe. Since my Morris family somehow has a Copeland connection, I am hope someone on the list has information on them. I am looking for a Copeland who had a daughter named Lena who was born in the early 1890's. Cheryl

Looking for information on John Craig b.1860 Jasper Co., IL, and his sister Myrta Craig b.1874 Jasper Co., IL. During the 1870's their parents Timothy S. Craig and Eleanor B. Smallwood Craig left Jasper Co., IL. Their oldest daughter Sara Elizabeth married before they left for Texas. In the 1880 TX census for Young Co. they were listed with their children; Samuel W., John, Andrew J., Myrta, and Walter I. I have found some information on Samuel, Andrew, and Walter. I have found nothing on John or Myrta. I know from my Craig family that Timothy and Eleanor died in TX, but do not know where. Appreciate any help you can give me. Loretta D.
I have so many bits and pieces and would like to tie up one at the moment. (Does anyone else feel overwhelmed at times with this search?) I am looking for a "Mr. Roberts" who was a police officer in either Dennison or Sherman. He later became the police chief of Ft. Worth in the early 1900's. Believe he was still the police chief there in 1924. He married Maebelle Phillips. Thank you so very much for any assistance. Clyda C. Carver [email protected]
My 75 yr old uncle, who was born in Sadler, said that the Sadler/Whitesboro area was home to many Indian half Indian families. Does anyone know about this? Also, Are there any late 1930's newspapers from Whitesboro around? Julia [email protected] wrote: > Its a long shot but you might try the "Indian depredations in Texas" book. > It is a large book. I have a Peter Jarboe who was b. 1833 KY, m. ca 1855 KY, came to IL 1865ish. 1st wife died 1872, Peter then remarried my gg grandmother Rebecca - her third marriage. 1st husband died, then my gg grandfather John Madison left her and the kids and went to TX, where he married again, settling in Collin Co. Peter Jarboe also left Rebecca and is said to have gone to TX in 1880-1881. Peter (and John Abell) was born in Marion Co KY, next door to Green Co, where the 1852 wasgon train came from, and I notice that some Jarboe's came on that train. I recently learned in 1888 Peterremarried again, in Caney KS, and it was suggested he worked for the railroads. If he was indeed in Grayson Co in the early 2880's, could he have worked for the Santa Fe Railroad? Did it go through Caney, KS? And does anyone know if there are railroad records that can be examined? Would love to verify that Peter was indeed in TX between IL and KS. Thanks! Beth Abel Jones
Frances If I was a betting man, I would bet that the Restaurant was one operated by the Santa Fe Railroad. In years past I have stayed at RR rooming houses and they had a cafe. It was for RR employees but other folks could use the facilities also. A map would show the railroad and it would have to be in one of the small towns that it goes through. This will eliminate a good part of the county. Most road maps show the RR. It would be at a place where they changed crews for the train. That was the only places they had a cafe and hotel, right by the depot operated by the RR. These were called Junctions. They were all closed down about 15 years (Mid to late 50's) after the steam locomotive went out and was taken over by the desiel electric trains that did not require large crews. In rare cases they were purchased and kept open by privite indivudles. I searching for Jackson Carter b 1855 mo, in grayson co. that run a hotel in bells? Looking for his family.Thanks Juanita in Ricerside,ca.
If I had access to the records I would put them on my web site. I believe the more info that is out there and available to others, helps us all out. It would be great if we could all afford to buy every book we needed but in reality we can't so free info is a must. I for one put as much free information on my web site as I can. Whenever I get to Texas I get as many records as I can and then put them on my web site for all to view freely. Just my opinion. All 47 cemeteries in Coleman County TX., including Ranch Cemeteries were recorded and the 3 volume book set is only 60.00. Why is it that some can do it and others not? Have never understood that. This project was done by 5 people on weekends that worked all week on thier jobs. Took 3 years to complete. Charlie

Cheryl -- I also would like to see the items you listed recently on the Grayson Co. website. As far as newspapers, I may be able to provide a little insight. My husband's gg grandfather was Bredette Corydon Murray, the editor and publisher of Denison's first newspaper, The Sunday Gazetteer. It was published from about 1890 until about 1915 (I'm relying on my faulty memory, so these dates may not be totally accurate). The Denison Public Library has the papers on microfilm -- but they DO NOT do lookups. The Denison Herald began publication in about 1910, and is still published today. Again, neither the Denison Public Library nor the Denison Herald staffs will do lookups. I believe that the Dallas Public Library MAY have copies of these 2 papers on microfilm, but don't know for sure. There are some great books published on early Denison -- it wouldn't take too much to put a synopsis of them on the website. --Laura
While I agree that more information on-line would be great, don't forget that Grayson County has lots and lots of cemeteries available on-line, a lot more than many other counties. The Van Alstyne Cemetery is published in a book which is still for sale so it won't be posted on-line anytime soon, if ever. "Collin County (Texas) Cemetery Inscriptions, Volume II" by Alice Pitts, Wanda O-Roark and Doris Posey, has recently been re-printed by Mrs. Pitts' daughter, and is available for sale - I think the Collin County genweb page may have information on that. The Grayson County Genweb Page would be the best place for posting information on how to do research in the county, etc. http://www.starbase21.com/PSGenealogy/Grayson.html visit this page and write to Paula Parke, the county coordinator, for suggestions for the page. And Gloria Mayfield does an excellent job as coordinator for the Grayson County Tombstone Project page http://www.rootsweb.com/~cemetery/Texas/grayson.html Shirley Webb [email protected]
