    1. [GRAYSON] Mary E Riley/? Daniels Marriage
    2. Ron Martin
    3. I'm trying to find where Mary E. Riley and unknown Daniels were married. In 1889 Mary E Riley married W.L. Martin in Cooke County. Mary moved to Texas in 1883 from AR. I cannot find a marriage record for her in AR. She was born in Hempstead County, AR. So I've come to believe she may have married Daniels in Grayson or Tarrant County. She had a son, "Boss" Daniels b:1880s unknown location. Any assistance greatly appreciated. 1. [GRAYSON] John Theobald
    2. dmflack
    3. Hi Listers, I am trying to find some information on a John Theobald. Our family is in possession of a bible that was presented to him by a Mr. and Mrs. Parker from Sherman, Grayson County, Texas. The inscription reads as follows: Presented to John Theobald, Minister of the Gospel, during the 7th day of August, in the year 1876. The book was given to and accepted by John Theobald as a great token of respect and affection by Mr. and Mr. Parker, Seniors, of the City of Sherman, in Grayson County, in the State of Texas, in the United States, in North America. The only information found in the bible is John Theobald's birth date and place. He was married to a Sarah Flack from Ontario, Canada. Sarah was the sister of my great grandfather. We are trying to trace the family to see if they had any children and what they were doing in Texas. Sarah is buried in Creemore, Ontario, Canada with her parents but John is not buried there. Anyone with information on John can email me privately with it. Thanks for your help.

    1. [GRAYSON] help for Starngers in boxes
    2. Maxine M Wilton
    3. SUGGESTIONS FOR THOSE STRANGERS IN OLD BOXES TIPS FOR IDENTIFYING OLD UNKNOWN PICTURES TIPS FOR MAKING THEM MORE SAFE FOR IDENTIFYING 1....reduce size of picture by making good photo copies and croping uneccesary scenery unless it identifies the picture with something specific. 2....scan uinidentified pictures into computor. Try to put several pictures on one page filling up the page with numbers under each. for identification when someone does identify it. 3....send by E Mail , to surname sites and County, States, possibly connected to pictures. ( places surnames were known to have been.) 4..... send message with imformation such as in Family Group Sheet form, about who the persons in pictures may be ( if you think you know ), and where you got the pictures, such as who had them, and where they lived. etc. 5..... Someone out there may also have the same picture and know who and what it is about. 6...... If no results . repost abt 2 weeks or more later . as people come and go on these sites. 7..... When you have them identified , DO NOT WRITE ON BACK OF PICTURES OR FRONT. Type or write identifying imfo on a acid free labels. Then place in a corner on back of pictures at top or bottom where the scenery is on front. If you write on picture Ink etc may, and can come through. 8..... It is best to store your pictures in acid free plastic envelopes or photo albums. These can be bought in some Craft supply places, Photo shops, but be sure the Company is a good one. There are some places that say they are acid free but they are not the best because of the way they are made etc. You can also put your own together. 9...... Take a Sunday after noon after church. and invite family over for a pot luck dinner. Have them bring their pictures all in albums and see if you have the same pictures and someone else has the identifications of them. Be sure all your pictures are in albums as they could get lost or otherwise disapear. 10.... For a more permanent safe place and album you can do the folowing.. Take a loose leaf notebook. Get a box of acid free notebook plastic non glare envelope pages. Also get a ream of acid free copy paper. Sort your pictures by unidentified and identified. pictures. Take a small piece of acid free plasic tape. Take about 1 inch piece and fold sticky side out in a circle and flaten and place at top of picture back. Arrange them sorted also by possible surnames and place on each side of 1 sheet of the copy paper sheets. Then slip the sheet into the acid free envelope and place in the notebook. This will make them most likely safe. from getting lost or otherwise disapear. You also may want to place a piece of acid free plastic tape across the middle of the top opening of the Plastic envelope closing the top in the center of the top to prevent removal of the page with pictures on it. I have added this to my message as I made a mistake several times of showing pictures to several different relatives at several different times and after they left I went to put them away and some of them were missing. When I confronted them they denied it but later when I was at their house I saw several of the pictures and I could and did identify as mine due to condition and marks I knew were on back. etc. Temptation is temptation and some people just can't resist it. Protect yourself. when it comes to your prescious unreplaceable old pictures 11....... Best way to show pictures for identification. .Another thing you can do is to take all pictures to a good copy place and make copies of them. Number them and place them in a loose leaf notebook numbering the pages also. (Or if you have a good scanner, make copies and place in notebook.) Then you don't have to worry about them and can easily note if a page is gone which wouldn't be a great loss. Tell your family members to make copies of pictures and put in a notebook and number them and the pages and not to bring the originals. Have a sheet of paper to note who and how a picture was identified using your numbered page and number of picture. Taking your identified pictures can help others if they have the same picture. as well as you. Hope the above will be of help to those with many unidentified pictures. The above works as I have done it and also met descend cousins and rec. copies of pictures I didn't have or ever seen before. and shared copies of mine with the scanned pictures. If you can't send attatchments then post them on a web page or your Gen. posted site and send the link and imformation about the pictures you have and they can go to the site then E Mail you with page number and picture number and imfo abt what they identified and how etc. Maxine Wilton [email protected]

    2. Mary C Stewart
    3. I have sent "Strangers in the Box" to many people. Recently, I went through seven shoeboxes of pictures at the request of my cousin to try to identify those faces "in the box". Sadly there are so many that I did not know. Pictures of precious babies, handsome men and women and groups of families with nothing written on the back. I hope you all will gather your pictures and place some indentification on the back for future generations. Thanks to the author of that piece.....it tells it all! Mary

    3. STRANGERS IN THE BOX Come, look with me inside this drawer, In this box I've often seen, At the pictures, black and white, Faces proud, still, serene. I wish I knew the people, These strangers in the box, Their names and all their memories Are lost among my socks. I wonder what their lives were like, How did they spend their days? What about their special times? I'll never know their ways. If only someone had taken time To tell who, what, where, or when, These faces of my heritage Would come to life again. Could this become the fate Of the pictures we take today? The faces and the memories Someday to be passed away? Make time to save your stories, Seize the opportunity when it knocks, Or someday you and yours could be....... The strangers in the box.

    1. [GRAYSON] Denison City Directories
    2. Yes, there were city directories printed for Denison during the years 1911-1918. They go back as far as the 1880s. The Denison Public Library has copies of most years (they are missing a few years, but I don't remember which ones). I don't know if the directories are available elsewhere or on-line. --Laura Yarbrough [email protected] Researching Murray and McMillin families from Denison

    1. [GRAYSON] CATES/WATSON/SKIPWORTH
    2. My ancestors arrived in Fannin County early 1886 after marring in Monroe County, TN December 1885. They are U. J. 'Riley Cates and Addy 'Callie' Watson. The surname was originally CATE, but Riley allowed it to evolve to CATES because most people pronounced it with an 'S'. 1 U. J. 'Riley' CATE(S) - -------------------------------------- Birth: 23 Sep 1865, McMinn County, Tennessee Burial: Apr 1931, Whitewright, Texas Death: 21 Apr 1931, Whitewright, Texas Father: Christopher C. 'Riley' first worked at the Davis Brothers Gins. He converted the gin between Orangeville and Whitewright from ox to steam driven. Later he was a foreman at the Whitewright oil mill and his last job was with the City of Whitewright at the Water Department. Riley lived in the Orangeville-Whitewright area for 45 years. He and Callie Watson Cates, his first wife, had five children. Jackson Ray, Charlie C. Mary, Robert L. 'Bob', and James Afton. Callie died in 1900 of tuberculosis and is buried in Porter Cemetery. Riley married again in 1910 to Phoebe Ellis 'Bitsey' Mayo. They did not have children. Riley and Bitsey are buried in City Cemetery at Whitewright. Between their headstones is a flat marker engraved "BABY." I wonder what family the baby belongs to. Charlie C. Cates married Mattie Skipworth, they are my grandparents. Both are also buried in City Cemetery as well as Jackson Ray Cates and his wife, Hettie Lee Dollar. Both Charlie and Ray worked for the City of Whitewright at the Water Department. Ray Cates was the Superintendent. One newspaper article was titled "Whitewright's Assistant mayor Keeps Things Going." It mentions "Whenever the mayor, F. M. Echols, gets stumped by a problem, he calls on his right hand man, Assistant Mayor Ray Cates." The article mentions that the Cates brothers had 45 years of combined service to the City. That does not include the 15 years their father, Riley, worked for the City. My father, J. B. Cates was born in Whitewright 1916. I have a photo of him at about 14 with a friend David Smith. Does anyone know a David Smith? My father graduated from the Whitewright High School 1934, worked at a restaurant in Mineral Wells for a while and joined the Army Air Corps in 1941. He, had two sisters, Velma Lee and Martha Lois, he married my mother in Wichita Falls Texas in 1944, and he died in 1955. I would appreciate any information you have about my family. Personal stories, photos, or whatever. In particular I would like a photo of my great grandmother, Callie Watson Cates. As a side note if anyone knows of Weldon Anthony I would like to have information about him. He is the father of my cousin Clara Joan Anthony. Weldon and my aunt Velma Lee Cates married in Durant Oklahoma 1931. Thank you, David L. Cates
