Hi Sheila, Living in Atlanta, you have an outstanding opportunity to trace your Gray County family! The National Archives branch in Atlanta is just South of downtown, in an area called Eastland, I believe. Housed at this branch of the NARA are microfilm rolls of all the Federal Census records from 1790 to 1920, as well as many other records that could be very useful to you. I've found the actual World War I Draft Cards for both of my grandfathers, as well as both of my husband's grandfathers and an uncle, at this branch location. They are divided up by the county in which the draftee was living at the time, and you just search through the box from that particular county. Request Gray County WWI Draft Cards at the front desk when you first go in, and they will let you know when the box you want has been brought in from the Archives storage...not more than an hour, as I remember. Since most all men between the ages of 18 and 30+ (44 in one case of mine), it is likely that your dad's father would have filled out a card, whether or not he actually served in the military, since it was a registration, not an induction. It is free to use the microfilm readers and to search through the Draft Cards. The copy fees are comparable to a public library. For those living elsewhere, you can request xerox copies of most records held at the Archives. This is a great link to the different facilities around the country, and what particular records are housed at each one. http://www.nara.gov/research/all/byloc.html Visit the Atlanta facility and check through the census for 1920 and 1910 for the counties where you think they probably were living at that time, and then look for the Draft Cards for your grandfather. Don't be intimidated by the size of the NARA operation...the microfilm rooms are filled with genealogists who are there for the same reason you are! I even got my husband and daughter, 13 at the time, to help me look through the census rolls! Good luck! Jack still lives around Pampa. b. 1936 At the time of my father's birth the family was living in Lefors, TX and I have no reason to think they ever left the area since both son's are there. Jack's father was also named JACK LEE CAMPBELL SR. m. EDNA MAY WHITE from Chalk, TX in Cottle County. JACK SR stated that he was a truck driver in 1936 when my father was born, and was from Lehigh, OK ;Coal County. But I have not found him on the SSDI or any record of him anywhere else. If anyone could do a look up for me on the census for Lefors I sure would appriciate it. And if anyone is working on transcribing the cemetery's in Lefors and there are any Campbells please let me know. Thanks a Million! Sheila Lee Campbell-Greenfield Atlanta, GA >>
