Hello Gray Co, Can anyone tell me where the Pampa, Gray, Texas cemetery lists are kept so I may view them on my next visit? I recently E-mailed this request and a question about obituaries to the Pampa newspaper and the reply was a telephone number for the Library. I would rather not call the Library from Arizona if someone has this information. I have found lists at Court Houses, Libraries, Churches and Funeral Homes. Hi Sheila, Living in Atlanta, you have an outstanding opportunity to trace your Gray County family! The National Archives branch in Atlanta is just South of downtown, in an area called Eastland, I believe. Housed at this branch of the NARA are microfilm rolls of all the Federal Census records from 1790 to 1920, as well as many other records that could be very useful to you. I've found the actual World War I Draft Cards for both of my grandfathers, as well as both of my husband's grandfathers and an uncle, at this branch location. They are divided up by the county in which the draftee was living at the time, and you just search through the box from that particular county. Request Gray County WWI Draft Cards at the front desk when you first go in, and they will let you know when the box you want has been brought in from the Archives storage...not more than an hour, as I remember. Since most all men between the ages of 18 and 30+ (44 in one case of mine), it is likely that your dad's father would have filled out a card, whether or not he actually served in the military, since it was a registration, not an induction. It is free to use the microfilm readers and to search through the Draft Cards. The copy fees are comparable to a public library. For those living elsewhere, you can request xerox copies of most records held at the Archives. This is a great link to the different facilities around the country, and what particular records are housed at each one. http://www.nara.gov/research/all/byloc.html Visit the Atlanta facility and check through the census for 1920 and 1910 for the counties where you think they probably were living at that time, and then look for the Draft Cards for your grandfather. Don't be intimidated by the size of the NARA operation...the microfilm rooms are filled with genealogists who are there for the same reason you are! I even got my husband and daughter, 13 at the time, to help me look through the census rolls! Good luck! Hello Listers, New to this list and hoping someone out there can help me. I am looking for the birth of Geraldine ? b. 14 Jun 1939 d. 14 Dec 1999. Her mother was Mattie Pearl Holiday b. 1989 OK/IT d. 1985 Napa, CA. Mattie was married to Oscar F. Genn. This baby is Geraldine. I don't know Geraldine's biological father, I merely know that she was born on the date mentioned above, and she was born in McLean, Gray Co., Texas. Sorry, I meant to include this link to a printable Texas State birth/death certificate request form... http://www.tdh.state.tx.us/bvs/registra/bcdcapp.htm If I order a certificate, I include as much information as I can...to ward off any thought they might have to reject my request. Janice, McLean is my hometown, and to my knowledge, there were no hospital services there until the 70s, and many babies were born in Shamrock, 20+ miles to the east, in Wheeler County. Hello, I hope you will forgive this somewhat off-topic post, but I feel it is important to share our experiences with others, and there is no better combination than that of our two favorite pastimes: Genealogy and Computers! I received a request (message given below) from a writer who is preparing an article for a highly regarded family computing magazine. He asks to be put in touch with anyone who will be helping to plan a family reunion this year, or who has done so in the past, by using information available online. I contacted the editor of FamilyPC, and was assured the article is being written for the Travel section of their June 2000 publication. If you would like to help Sam Perkins with his research for this article, please contact him at perki72@ibm.net The reunion site he refers to is on the Homespun mailing list webpage: http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~homespun/ ...and the newest, the Oklahoma Reunions page: http://www.rootsweb.com/~okkingfi/family.htm Again, I apologize for straying a bit this morning! Thank you, LaRae GRAY COUNTY Listmgr ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Subj: Family Reunions Date: 2/10/2000 6:38:06 AM Pacific Daylight Time From: perki72@attglobal.net (Sam Perkins) To: TimeTrvlrO@aol.com For an article I'm writing FamilyPC magazine, (working title) "Summertime Reunions Via the Web," to appear in June 2000, I'd like to be put in touch with people you might be aware of who have used Homespun-Country Kitchen's and/or other web or computer tools to plan family reunion vacations. Good morning all, I just wanted to take an opportunity to introduce myself to you. I recently became the 'manager' of the Gray County mailing list, and, at the same time, started administering a full suite of GenConnect boards for the county. Managing a Rootsweb County mailing list is basically just keeping the list active...posting general information from time to time, and passing on to you anything that has to do with genealogical research in Gray County. The rest is up to each one of you! I will call for a Roll Call about once a month -- a list-wide call for any and all family who have lived in Gray County. This always brings great results...many make family connections during a roll call, or can give or receive personal-knowledge information that might help in research. We also get to know one another better! Importantly, it places valuable data in the Gray County archives to be searched by others for years to come. The GenConnect boards are another excellent research source. I've set up a special page for the full suite of boards, and have included an explanation of how they were set up originally. Linking to their main page, you can learn how they can best be used to help you in your family research. http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~tmetrvlr/graycob.html Please take the time to post your own queries and log any other family information you've found in your genealogical research. Other than the Queries board, my personal favorite is the one specifically for Biographies...I love to read others entries on early county residents, and I enjoy adding bios on my own family members for others to read for years to come. I hope you will also visit the Gray County GenWeb page at... http://www.rootsweb.com/~txgray/ The County Coordinator is Marie Bartholomew, and she is in the process of adding valuable county records to the webpage. If you have personal access to Gray County records and information, I'm sure she would appreciate any and all contributions and offers to do lookups. I am not an expert on genealogical research in the county, but, like you, I've had family living in Gray County for many years...over the past 100 years, 5 generations of my family have lived in McLean. My mother and her younger siblings went to school there, as did my son, and I graduated from McLean High School in 1962. My main Gray County families I research are Sullivan and Meacham in McLean, and Shipley, Anderson, and Haynes in Pampa. I hope you all will get the most out of the Rootsweb-sponsored genealogical research tools available to us for Gray County -- by making frequent posts and participating in discussions on the mailing list, and by posting to the various GenConnect boards. There are other research-related features specifically for Gray County which will appear as 'taglines' at the end of every other post...rotating with contact information to me and another for how to make great query messages. I'll put samples below. Many thanks for your subscription to the Gray County mailing list, and I hope you will gain a great deal from your participation. Pass the word and let's boost our numbers!
