    1. [TXGRAY] Biographical Sketches Project
    2. Hi everyone, I hope your summer is going well, and that you've all had time to do some family research. It seems that more and more databases and census records are being put online everyday, so I'll continue to keep you updated on any new sites I hear about...you all do the same! We've had two projects already this summer, and have been adding all your new SURNAMES and Family Group Sheets to the webpage. Many thanks to those of you who have helped to add valuable information on early Gray County residents. For the August 1-15 project, we'll be asking for BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCHES of your Gray County families, to be added to the growing collection of resource information on the webpage. Nothing formal...just include what you know about your Gray County families. You may want to tell us about the first of your family to settle in the county, or you may choose a later family to feature. Even better, tell us something about each generation! You can also focus on an individual person, if you prefer. Share with us anything you know about these folks...where they resided before coming to Gray County and what caused them to relocate, where and how they lived, if the children went to school or were taught at home or worked to help out, if they were active in a church or community, how they were affected by adversity or better times, and any other bits of information you may have learned in your research. Remember to replace the Subject line with the person or family you are featuring. Whether you have one surname or a dozen, I'm looking forward to hearing all the interesting stories handed down to you or that you've discovered about your Gray County families. Thanks, LaRae Gray County listmgr. http://www.rootsweb.com/~txgray/ Note: You may continue to submit new material in a previous category, and we'll add it to the Gray County webpage as they're received. The project schedule is as follows: July 1 - Surnames July 15 - Family Group Sheets August 1 - Biographical Sketches August 15 - Photo Album September 1 - Land Records September 15 - Obituaries October 1 - Wills

    1. [TXGRAY] Free Databases
    2. Hello, As some of you may know, Rootsweb and Ancestry.com have recently merged. While Rootsweb will continue to function separately by providing us with all the services, research sources, and over 21,000 genealogical mailing lists just as it has in the past, the merger has provided Rootsweb listmembers with a few 'perks' from Ancestry.com. Starting today and lasting until the end of July, Ancestry.com is opening up all of their databases to us for free access. They have routinely allowed free access to all new resources for the first 10 days, and I occasionally pass that information along to you if it pertains to something of particular interest. However, until July 31st, ALL of their databases can be searched for free. Please don't misinterpret this as a recommendation beyond the free offer, as I only wish to pass along to you the ability to search records which are normally open to members only. The signup is very simple...I did it, and took all morning just to get through the databases beginning with the letter 'A', as the list of records is quite extensive. Browsing further, I found an actual photocopy of my g-g-grandfather's Civil War pension application. They also have a free daily newsletter with genealogical articles, lists of the new 'free for the first 10 days' databases and maps, and research tips from readers. Many of the little things I post to the list have come from this newsletter. The URL for the free offer is: http://www.ancestry.com/subscribe/freepromo.asp?sourcecode=A11AF I deliberated whether or not to forward this offer on to you, but then decided that you could do a great deal of free research in the next couple of weeks! I hope each of you will check through what is available, and wish you good luck in your research. Be sure to let us know any new discoveries! Thanks, LaRae Gray County -- TXGRAY listmgr. http://www.rootsweb.com/~txgray/ Their notice in today's newsletter..... ============================================================ FREE ACCESS TO ANCESTRY.COM SUBSCRIBER DATABASES ============================================================ Ancestry.com is offering free access to all of its databases through July 31, 2000. Ancestry.com databases currently reference more than 600 million names in over 2,500 databases, and our goal is to have over 1 billion names online by 2001. Ancestry has been adding databases at a record-breaking pace, and the genealogical community has been thrilled to see the recent postings of such landmark databases as the Biography and Genealogical Master Index (BGMI) and the 1890 Census Reconstruction Project. These are in addition to quality collections like the PERiodical Source Index (PERSI), AIS Census Indexes, the Civil War Research Database, Slave Narratives, and the American Genealogical-Biographical Index, to name a few. Recent database additions include: --- Civil War Pension Images Online --- New York Naturalization Petition Index, 1907-24 --- Gene Pool Individual Records (20 million names in 5 million records!) --- Canadian Immigrant Records And there is much more to come! The list of upcoming additions to the 1890 Census Reconstruction Project alone is staggering! (The list is online at: http://www.ancestry.com/search/rectype/census/1890sub/upcoming.htm.) The upcoming New England database "The Great Migration Begins" will be sure to thrill those with roots in old New England, and Ancestry.com Images Online will bring quality images of original records into your own home! Sign up for free access today at: http://www.ancestry.com/subscribe/freepromo.asp?sourcecode=A11AF -------------------------- To subscribe to this newsletter, visit http://www.ancestry.com/ and type your e-mail address in the box provided, or send an e-mail message to: mailto:ancestry_daily_news@anclist001.ancestry.com with the word "subscribe" in the subject line. ============================================================

    3. Posted on: Gray Co. Tx Queries Board URL: http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/USA/Tx/Gray?read=17 Surname: McAdams ------------------------- In reference to your query, a list of those buried in Hillcrest Cemetery in McLean lists a "Grandma McAdams", buried in 1955. Very frustrating--no full name, and no date of burial, which would enable me to get an obituary from our mcrofilmed issues of the "McLean News", in Lovett Library, Pampa. I went to the Gray County Clerk's office in Pampa, and checked the indexes to the death certificates. Nothing for James Walter McAdams, or for any McAdams in 1955 or around there. I do not know that "Grandma" was the wife of James Walter, but hoped that I could find a date of death for her, and an obit, and maybe that would mentioned James Walter. No McAdams in the Pampa directory or the Feist areawide directory including Gray and some surrounding counties. There are 2 in Stinnett, in Hutchinsion County. Might write and see if they could be descended from James Walter.

The Fatheree family is locally prominent, and there is a writeup on VE and Hattie and their descendants in the Gray County History book, written in 1986. However, have not found the Darnalls in Pampa city directories from 1933, the earliest we have at Lovett Library, Pampa (Pampa directories started in 1929). Do you know where and when they died? If here, then might be able to get an obit from the microfilmed Pampa papers which would give a complete list of their children. Have not found an Ebb Luna so far in Pampa city directories,. Early directories list an Hamilton Luna, wife Neta. Well, not early--he appears in the 1950s and continues on into the 1950s. Pampa phone book lists some Lunas--could be descended from H. M., might know something about this Ebb. No luck so far on R. L. Evans. Some city directories mention a Ray, wife Maxine, who was the city engineer in 1951. Might try to get an obit for Maxine, assuming that she is dead and that she died here, and see if it mentions her maiden name. There were 12 Evans families in 1951, and many Evans families in the current phone book--might write them and see if they know of an R. L.
