Hi all, I'm forwarding a post on to you that was submitted by someone who is not on the mailing list. If you share the families mentioned, you may contact her directly. The gentleman she refers to in her post, is probably our Gray County 'Genie Angel'...John Mead, from the Lovett Memorial Library in Pampa. Mr. Mead also graciously gives his time to help researchers on other Texas panhandle county GenConnect message boards. LaRae listmgr. In a message dated 10/24/2000 4:45:01 AM PDT, MEGBR549@aol.com writes: << Note: There was a gentleman who worked at the Love Library in Pampa tx. gray co. and he looked up in the old newspaper files, many of the Hugg and Turner Obits and sent them in June 2000 to Judy Hugg Grimes in Calif. He did not put his name on the envelope--but his good deed is mentioned here with our THANKS. Obit is listed as : A SAD DEATH Tears shed with deep grief Wednesday morning to warn of the death of Katy( Could be Kathy- name not printed clearly), 10 year old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. J. Lee Turner, which occured at six o'clock after a brief attack of appendicitis. The child had been complaining since Saturday but her condition was not considered serious. During the night prior to her death, Mr. Turner had been up several times and held her in his lap as she was suffering and could not sleep. About four o'clock she said that she believed she could go to sleep and he laid her on the bed and lay down beside her. Mrs Turner watched by her bed for awhile and then called Mr. Turner saying, "The child is worse". He again took the child in his lap, where he held her until she passed away about six o' clock. Funeral services were conducted Thursday afternoon by Rev.Goodwin and the last remains were laid to rest in the local cemetery. Many beautiful floral offerings and many kind words were spoken of sympathy and love and the deep feelings of friends and neighbors . All endeavored to console the stricken family in their irreparable loss. Two brothers who were away arrived for the funeral. J.W. Turner, who lives near Miami and Josh Turner who is connected with the Coldwater National Bank at Coldwater, Kansas. (note: this news paper clipping was from the McLean News and is dated, 16 January 1917. Since in another obit it is stated that, Ollie mae turner hugg and her husband and family moved to Mclean, tx from strawberry in 1919 , it is the opinon of Judy Hugg Grimes that Ollie Mae and Grandon Tobias Hugg came to McLean because they had Turner family there already-possibly siblings to ollie mae?) (also a note: this child's name of Katy or Kathy is consistent--Ollie mae named one of her daughters Katherine, I believe this child was a niece to ollie mae turner hugg-- no proof. Naming children names that have been in your family is a long standing habit of this Hugg line and Turner line.) >>

Hi, I also do the Sherman County mailing list, and frequently get queries about Sherman, Texas, in Grayson County, but this is the first time someone has mistakenly posted a query about Sherman to Gray County! Posts to the GenConnect message boards are set up to be automatically forwarded to the mailing list, and, unfortunately, once in a while something off-topic slips through. As active as the Gray County message boards are, I guess it's worth the risk. LaRae listmgr. Alexander Schaffer married Mary Elizabeth Peters 1867 in Madison County Ohio. Their first child was born in Ohio 1867. Eleven children were born in Missouri from 1869-1892. The family then moved to Gray County in1893. Alexander bought land in Gray County one mile north of Jericho in 1895, where he resided until his death in 1928. This land is still owned by Schaffer's. Ephraim Schaffer, Alexander's 3rd. child bought land in Gray County also in 1915, approx. 5 miles north of Jericho. There is a cemetery at Jericho that is maintained by the Schaffer Family to date. Several other properties have been purchased by Schaffer's in this same area. Our brick wall is Alexander's parents or any siblings? The first written record of Alexander is in Ohio dating from the Civil War. Family lore tells Alexander and his brother George came here from Germany in the hull of a cargo ship. Happy Hunting!!!
