Society Members: Special Program on "Preserving Family Memories" To: betwil62@live.com *Huntsville Public Library and Sam Houston State University's Newton Gresham Library will co-host "Preserving Family Memories" on Saturday, November 9 from 9:00 a.m. - 3:30 p.m. The presentation will include two workshops, the first in the morning and the second following a lunch break, and attendees can choose to attend both or just one of the workshops. "The community is incredibly fortunate to have such relevant subjects presented by librarians who are experts in their field," City Librarian Linda Dodson said. "Interest in all things genealogical continues to increase all over the nation, and these free presentations or workshops are giving us an unprecedented opportunity to learn from individuals with credentials and experience related to keeping our family history preserved and 'alive' for generations that follow. "We're also excited that SHSU's Newton Grisham Library is co-hosting; we really hope to see a good turn-out for this event." "Preserving Family Memories - Non-Digital Photographs and Other Materials" will be presented in the Huntsville Library Community Room from 9:00 a.m. - 11:30 a.m. by Felicia Williamson, MLIS, CA, who serves as the head of Thomason Special Collections at the Newton Gresham Library. Topics covered will include basic preservation with respect to records environment, storage methods, insects and other sources of decay; preserving newspaper clippings; and identifying and preserving photographs. Examples from albums and scrapbooks will be included in the presentation. "Preserving Family Memories - Digital and Other Materials" will be presented in the Huntsville Library Community Room from 1:00 p.m. - 3:30 p.m. by James Williamson, Jr., MLIS, CA, a Digital Resources Librarian with Newton Gresham Library. Topics covered will include the basics of digitization equipment; format standards; naming and organization of digital files; digital preservation and storage. Question and answer sessions will follow each presentation, and a break for independent lunch will be offered from 11:30 a.m. - 1:00 p.m. Pre-registration by November 6 is required for attendees who wish to receive lecture handouts.
