Thought someone might be interested in this project. The Jack County Public Library in Jacksboro boxed up all of the county's school yearbooks and sent them to the Oklahoma Prison System to be scanned and put on DVDs. The scans are big, good images. This is a free 'School Yearbook Digitation Project' in OK, but they also do lots of books from TX. They even pay for the shipping both ways! They said that turn-around was currently about 6 weeks. I'm giving the OK (OCI) address to our Wise County libraries. I'm hoping that they will have their books scanned. Oklahoma Correctional Industries (OCI) 16161 Moffat Rd. Lexington, OK 73051 405-527-4825 or 405-527-0833 Jack County only has 3 schools, but this was over 200 books! We indexed and put all the images of the pages up to 1980 online on the Jack County TXGenWeb pages. It's a wonderful resource of names and pictures (students, faculty, and old businesses in the advertising). We have had MANY Fannin County Yearbook scanned by this program and have been 110% satisfied. The quality has been excellent and the turnaround rapid. I can't say enough nice things. I have posted the Windom yearbooks to my site (with transcription) but the Honey Grove Preservation League has posted many more Honey Grove and Windom yearbooks (without transcription) by just uploading them to Flickr (a Terabyte for FREE) and then linking to the slide show. Other than upload time, she has had little or no work to do to get the yearbooks available to her site visitors. 1949 Sample yearbook: TXFannin GenWeb http://www.txfannin.org/yearbooks.php?school=105&year=1949&page=6#date 1943 Sample yearbook: Honey Grove Preservation League http://www.flickr.com/photos/97263918@N04/sets/72157634226733025/ Suzie TXFannin On Wed, Oct 23, 2013 at 3:25 PM, Sue Tackel <sue@wisecountytexas.info>wrote: > Thought someone might be interested in this project. > The Jack County Public Library in Jacksboro boxed up all of the > county's > school yearbooks and sent them to the Oklahoma Prison System to be scanned > and put on DVDs. Do they keep a copy of the scans? Does it cost to have them scanned? No charge for the scanning and you get the books back unharmed and all the scans on CD's or DVD's to use as you see fit. The files are large with lots of dpi. I resized mine down by 50% to use them on the site but they are still plenty big. Those on Flickr can be left full size. Yes, they ‘archive’ a copy. They said the project was started because some schools lost their yearbooks in tornados, etc. They don't sell the copies, but there is no copyright on them. Guess they could be used by anyone. It's free and they pay for the shipping both ways. Jack County had over 200 books done.
