I've already replied to Jane privately, but since the topic of DNA has come up and we love FREE websites... I want to be sure everyone knows about www.gedmatch.com. It's a FREE website that allows people who have tested with Ancestry, Family Tree DNA (FTDNA), or 23andme to upload their raw data to compare it to others' results that match yours. For example, if you tested with Ancestry, you can compare your results with those who tested with FTDNA and 23andme, not just Ancestry. There are many useful utilities on the site to help with comparing and analyzing your results that aren't offered on the testing websites. Another FREE website is www.dnagedcom.com, but it is only for those who tested with FTDNA or 23andme. My results haven't been as dramatic as those of Mike and Jane, but I did connect with a half second cousin; I'm a descendent from our great grandfather's first wife and she from his second. She scanned and sent me two photos of him. That alone was worth the cost of the DNA test to me because I have only one very faded picture of him. We're now research partners, sharing our research ideas and frustrations - particularly about our great grandfather, the mystery man, who left very few clues about his parents and siblings.
