If you are really interested in finding out more about that unit, try checking out the US Army Transportation Museum http://www.transchool.eustis.army.mil/museum/museum.html.  If you can't find anything on the website itself, contacting one of the museum personnel may find some results for you. Another good site is the Center for Military History: http://www.history.army.mil/, and for information about rank, unit lineages, etc:  The Institute of Heraldry: http://www.tioh.hqda.pentagon.mil/ Cliff Fargason Scurry County -----Original Message----- From: txgen-bounces@rootsweb.com [mailto:txgen-bounces@rootsweb.com] On Behalf Of Robin Inge Sent: Sunday, April 12, 2009 9:11 PM To: txgen@rootsweb.com Subject: Re: [TXGEN] Warrant Officer This is information listed on the Emlistment: Date:15 April 1942 Grade:  Private Branch:  Branch Immaterial, Warrent Officer Source:  Civil Life Marital Status:  Single It is the Headstone that shows the CPL 662 Port CO TO WWII  (What does the TO stand for)   Robin R Inge "Life is not measured by the number of breaths we take, but by the number of moments that take our breath away"     ________________________________ From: Cliff Fargason <fargason@c-edesign.com> To: txgen@rootsweb.com Sent: Sunday, April 12, 2009 7:56:45 PM Subject: Re: [TXGEN] Warrant Officer That depends upon what the family desires at the time they request the headstone. Some even have campaigns, or medals listed. If the veteran is buried in a national cemetery the spouse is authorized to be placed in the same plot.  When you see those headstones, the veteran is listed on the front, the spouse on the back. I just did some searching on the ancestry records for WWII Army enlistments. It appears that they don't have Navy records online, and the Marine records go up to 1940 only.  I found many records, including my fathers that had indication of officer and warrant officer in the branch or component fields. The place that indicates their Rank or Grade is what you need to look at to see what rank they had on enlistment.  Those who were in the Reserves or National Guard prior to being mobilized for the war will show a rank higher than private. Warrant officers are highly skilled, single-track specialty officers,   and while the ranks are authorized by Congress, each branch of the Uniformed   Services selects, manages, and utilizes warrant officers in slightly   different ways. For appointment to Warrant Officer One (W-1), a warrant is   approved by the secretary of the service. Chief Warrant Officers (W-2 to   W-5) are commissioned by the President of the United States, and take the   same oath as regular commissioned officers (O-1 to O-10).   Warrant officers can and do command detachments, units, activities, vessels,   aircraft, and armored vehicles as well as lead, coach, train, and counsel   subordinates. However, the Warrant Officer's primary task as a leader is to   serve as a technical expert, providing valuable skills, guidance, and   expertise to commanders and organizations in their particular field.   ----- Original Message -----   From: Grey Oaks Equine Sanctuary   To: txgen@rootsweb.com   Sent: Sunday, April 12, 2009 10:52 AM   Subject: Re: [TXGEN] Military Search Information   There are indeed Coporals in the Marine Corp.   -   Linda Simspson   ----- Original Message -----   From: Robin Inge   To: txgen@rootsweb.com   Sent: Sunday, April 12, 2009 10:23 AM   Subject: Re: [TXGEN] Military Search Information   My thinking was it stood for Corporal... and the only Branch with that   is Army... but no 662 Division. ?
