Uploading a non-web font...even if you link it with CSS may not work on anyone's computer other than YOURS. It is best to stick with common fonts or make an image of something you created in a special font...such as the page logo...so that it doesn't display differently on other computers...and other browsers for that matters. Often the different versions of IE even don't treat a font the same. The Google web fonts are a good alternative but you still need to link the site to the Google font. If it is a web-font you are fine. If it is not a web-font then you have to have paid for the right to upload the font and make it a web font.
