    2. Suzanne Sowell
    3. Thanks for the welcome. We are related but it is not a direct line. The common ancestor is back in North Carolina in the early 1700's. That branch went to Tennessee and our branch went to South Carolina>Alabam>Texas. Our ancestor Ransom Sowell came to Texas before the Republic of Texas days serving in the Texas Revolution. He was with the group that comprised the first Texas Rangers. 3. If you had a external HD you could just copy My Documents from one HD to the other faster than that. You would have an exact copy of you flies. You could open and use if needed. I think this BackUp Utility will create a large file that will have to be reinstalled so it can be used. That is why it is taking so long. Mac has a program that does that. Each time you make a backup it make a new file each time. I really didn't like it. 3. The program I use on Mac will Sync or Backup. Sync will put the newest file over the older one each HD. Backup up overwrite the Main File over the Backup file. I run a small newspaper. My files for this paper is 3.8GB. It will read those files in about 20 seconds and the after you confirm you want to overwrite the files on the Backup file, it only takes about 5 seconds to do that. One thing is that I do this each day so I don't have to change that many files. I also do this for my emails, browser files, accounting files, etc. If I have not changed anything I can cancel the process if needed. I had on program that wanted to make a complete new group of files each time. That took up a lot of room and took several minutes each time. Canned that program. 3. I have a MAC. To change a HD just shut down, unplug the power cable. Touch the back of the computer to discharge any static electricty. Open the computer and find the HD. It will have two different cables, unplug and keep inside the static back the new HD came in. Slide the new HD in the place the other came, plug in the two cable, close the computer, plug up and fire in the hole. If the new HD has the system disk it will start from that HD. If you have synchronized the HD it should be the same as the old. You could have two HD inside you computer and synchronize them often. If something happen to one then you would already have a complete system HD ready to go. On my backup HD I have a complete System on this drive and I can select it if something was to happen to my main HD. It doesn't contain any programs just files needed to operated my computer if needed. I always keep it updated with the latest updates for Apple so it is current. You can tell I may go to the extreme but I had a total melt down one time and lost a lot of files (photos, videos, etc) that could not be replace. That will never happen again. 3. Here is a little info about backing up Windows XP. http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/using/setup/learnmore/ bott_03july14.mspx The problem I have with this type of backup is not what I think you want. It is just like a backup that has to be reinstalled. A third party program that could synchronize two different hard drives or backup one hard drive to another. For the Mac Synchronize! Pro X I think would do this task. I use a different HD for by files. My system and programs are on one HD and my data files on another HD. This is not a partition of the System Drive, a second HD in side the computer. If the system HD was to go down all of data files would be on another HD. Some files have to be in the system HD so I back them up along all my data files to a third HD I also can take the backup drive out of the enclosure if need, it is on tray. If needed another drive could be backup and put is a save place if that was needed. Most people don't go to that extreme. Large business do that each day. 3. I said that badly. I meant that if you change the HD, you can't copy your SYNCed files to the new drive. It has to be a BACKUP made from software that specifically states it will restore to a NEW drive. The MS Backup Utility failed again. Since I'm working on a FAT 32 system, the file size is limited to 4 MB. I'm going to try the home version of Acronis software some time this week. I'll let everyone know what happens. 3. Maybe a Mac is different but SYNC software won't work that way on a PC. If the HD has changed, it won't sync - period. Gina Heffernan Rusk Co, Texas ________________________________ From: collingsworth <collingsworth@dcolson.com> To: txgen@rootsweb.com Sent: Saturday, March 21, 2009 10:27:33 PM Subject: Re: [TXGEN] backup solutions I have a MAC. 3. I happened to be at Wal-Mart today looking at Jump Drives for a friend so we could save some documents on it and that had EXTERNAL HARD Drives for CHEAP.  They had one that held 160 MB for 60.00 (on sale) originally 80.00.  Then the one with 500MB of Memory was 98.00.  I dont understand all the MB part for the memory size, but the external harddrives are not that expensive at all.   Robin R Inge "Life is not measured by the number of breaths we take, but by the number of moments that take our breath away"     ________________________________ From: Lawrence E. 3. I've installed the Backup Utility and told it to backup my whole computer (system and all). It failed. I then told it to backup My Documents and it found 33 GB of files. It's going to take 5 hours to create the single file for recovery. (The time is fluctuating, it was up to 8 1/2 hours at one point. Ooops, it's down to 3 1/2.) I'll let you know how this works out. Anybody have any ideas on this? _________________________________________ Eddie Cope: Pecos County Coordinator http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~txpecos2/ ________________________________ From: collingsworth <collingsworth@dcolson.com> To: txgen@rootsweb.com Sent: Friday, March 20, 2009 7:43:31 PM Subject: Re: [TXGEN] backup solutions I have an external hard drive that I back up everything of importance. 3. I guess I will just jump in the middle here and put my 2+ cents worth in. What I would like to see is a backup program (regardless of type) that would backup the complete HD, Operating system, boot track and whatever else Microsoft has not told us about. This would enable us to go to Wal Mart (or wherever), buy a new HD and restore every bit from one disk to the other. The old DOS system would let you do a "Disk Copy" but that term has gotten lost in "lets make more money"! I bought a Segate disk from WalMart a couple of years ago and it claimed that it would do this but I was never successful at doing so.
