The Salem witch trials are more a tale of greed. There were those that had settled and prospered, then others that came along later or had not done as well. The second group wanted the well-situated land of the first. Years later the young girls confessed that their original plan had been to get even with a third girl who "stole a boyfriend". It was the father of one of them that hatched the idea of using the charges of witchcraft to acquire good fertile land. Re, your co-worker: It is fascinating the stories we learn of our ancestors. I have to disagree with this on the grounds that we deal in historical reality, not whether we like the things that happen or not. It is indeed a gory thing, but one that I found on the site was an historical relative of mine who was killed as a witch during the Salem witch trials. That was truely a gruesome time.
