Joan, Even though I live in Houston and can easily travel to Galveston, I found several of my family members by ordering Catholic Church records at our local Family History Center. There were lots of congregations, since that was a diocese in those days, but when I found the right one, there were the birth, christening, and death records I needed in the same general time frame you're searching for.
