Liz, I saw your request on the Galveston genealogy listserv. It appears to me that the Mayfield family did not stay very long in Galveston. There is an article about him indexed in the Dec 20, 1896 Galveston Daily News. I copied it and will send it to you if you would like. It is not very long, and the pertinent information reads as follows: "Mayfield the Man (title) "He has been appointed state quarantine officer at Galveston. Dr. W. F. Blunt Resigned" (subtitle) Article then talks about Dr. Blunt and his resignation. Last paragraph says this: "Dr. Mayfield is a comparatively new man in Galveston. He has been here a little less than a year, according to such meager information as could be secured last night. he came here from Alvin and previous to his residence there lived in Matagorda county. He is a man of about 45 years of age and has a family. His brother physicians say he is well qualified for the position." He and one son, James S., are in the city directory for 1898. He is listed as John C. Mayfield, Physician. Officer in charge of Texas State Quarantine station 1 1/2 miles northeast of city. Residence same. His son is listed as James S., secretary of TX State Quarantine Station and captain of the launch. res. same. After the 1900 Storm, the family only appears in one directory, 1901-02. Emmett, student, lives with John C. James S., druggist, resides 514 Market John C. Physician (same as before) Weston, lives with John C. They do not appear in any city directory after 1901-02. I checked 1903-1910. I don't know where they went. Unfortunately, I don't have any information about Alvin, TX. It is in Brazoria County. You may want to try there and Matagorda County for earlier information. I don't know what to suggest regarding where they may have gone. Perhaps the state archives for any records on the quarantine station? I also check the death lists for the 1900 Storm and there were no Mayfields listed on it. Shelly Kelly Galveston Tx
