Helen, The Memorial at Shanks Cemetery is the first Saturday in June. Both my parents were born in Freestone Co. My Mother, Jessie Ezell, was born near Luna and my Dad, Joe Lincoln Sharp, at Shanks. When my Dad retired in the early 70s, they moved back to Freestone Co. to land that my Grandfather, Benjamin Franklin Sharp, bought from Drew King in 1922. As long as Mother and Daddy were able, they helped Traynham and Martha Faye Moore "keep" Shanks Cemetery. My Dad, my grandparents, and several aunts and uncles are buried at Shanks. Just a word from my soap box. All these rural cemeteries are supported by contributions from people who have folks buried there. Anyone who is interested in contributing to the upkeep of Shanks or Antioch at Luna can contact me and I can put them in touch with the secretary of the cemetery association. Sandy made a caring and proper comment about these old rural cemeteries. In many cases, the land was donated for a cemetery. The majority of the funds for the maintenance comes from those who care enough to make donations now. Antioch Cemetery at Luna has expanded its annual "bulletin" to include advertising space purchased by local businesses. Space may also be purchased by people who want to place a memorial in the bulletin in memory of someone who is buried there. This memorial space can include a picture of the deceased along with information. If a picture is not available, words alone make a wonderful remembrance. The earnings from the sale of space in the bulletin is put into the cemetery maintenance fund. If you are not on the mailing list for Antioch Cemetery Bulletin - but would like to be - send me your name and mailing address and I will print it out and hand it to the secretary/treasurer to be added before the bulletin is mailed out this year. If you are interested in purchacing space for a memorial for one of your loved ones buried in Antioch at Luna, contact me "off the list" [to keep from "cluttering" this list for others] for more details.
