David, This one is on Champness T. Echols Freestone County History Book Vol-1 Paragraph 288 Pg. 349 By: Welda Carroll Norris and Helen Carroll Hunt Champness T. Echols, son of William Echols, was born in Pittsylvania County, Virginia on Feb. 23, 1804. Agnes W. Clement, daughter of Adam Clement, one of the founders of Lynchburg, Virginia was born in Clarke County, Virginia on August 15, 1804. They were married in Virginia bur later they moved to Henderson County, Tennessee, where eight of their nine children were born. They were in Rusk County, Texas at the time of the 1850 census; however, they must not have stayed very long, because they were in Freestone County, Texzas by 1853. On the historical marker at Salem Cemetery Champness is listed as one of the founders of the Salem Predestinarian Baptist Church and Cemetery on December 3, 1853. He and his family are listed in the 1860 census of Freestone County. His occupation is listed as a farmer but he was a minister of the Predestinarian Baptist Church for a period of Forty Years. Chapness T. Echols died May 30, 1878 and is buried in Salem Cemetry. His widow died on October 3, 1889 and is buried in Salem Cemetery. Their children were Mary Echols Patton (John); Martha Echols Hendrix; Susan; Benjamin R.; Obediah; Juniah; Sarah Echols Patton (W. M.); Anna Virginia Echols Carroll; Moses C. Echols. Anna Virginia Echols was attending a Female Academy in Fairfield when the Civil War started, but during the war she taught school. She married Dr. Steadman D. Carroll on March 7, 1866. Champness T. Echols took and active part in the Fairfield Female College and was listed as a stockholder in the College in 1857 when construction on the College building began. David I have been following yours and Catherine's (Isn't she great!) conversation. I have some pictures of Salem & Union Cem on my website. I don't think of your family but there are pictures of the Historical markers of the Cem and the gates etc. You can click on the photos and get a bigger picture. If you can't read exactly what it says (I tried to make it clear!) I can look at my photos and write it down for you! There is a really nice small chapel at Salem but I don't have a picture of it by itself.
