This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Surnames: Wallace, DeMoss, House, Worley Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/AiB.2ACE/957.1 Message Board Post: I also have questions about the 1900 Freestone Co. census. Maggie Key was married to C Elijah DeMoss 1/16/1898 vol 5 pg 272 in Freestone Co. However the 1900 census shows her single and in the Owen Denton Key household, also John D. DeMoss 1 yr. Not far away is an Elis DeMoss who has daughter Mary and sons George, Frank,Thomas,& Charlie. Birth dates & parents birth place wrong but names fit Lige's family. Christopher Elijah DeMoss was a widow in 1880 census with daughter Mary in Freestone Co TX. Christopher Elijah married Rose Wallace Sept 17,1885 in Freestone Co TX. They had 4 sons George, Frank, Thomas,& Charlie. Rose died in 1896 per her father's civil war papers. I am interested in information on DeMoss family. Will share what I have.
What I found in my own personal searches have been that sometimes, family members decided to divorce or separate and they just moved out...rather than officially go through with the court proceedings. And remarried as if a first marriage had never taken place. Sometimes, people HAD to get married and then had it annulled. (I can't figure that one out.) You must remember that the censuses were taken by people who could often barely read and write and often assumed information, or blatantly got it wrong.Especially spelling, ages, sex, etc... All information needs to be verified by a number of sources to be determined correct...believe me. Contact the local courthouse, newspapers (for announcements), or Church records for records of marriages, deaths, etc..in Freestone County, it is more difficult due to the fire, but info. can still be found. Do not accept the LDS records as 100% accurate. I have found them to have many mistakes. Let me know how you do. I would love to have a good copy of the 1900 Navarro County census....not one that is 99% black.
